  1. Cheers AJ.... This point seems to be so easily forgotten in this discussion. Never hear it said that Canucks haven't picked top 4 since the Sedins in 99....
  2. Are you pro long contracts or against those? And which GM is it you consider to be good. By the way our core players are 19 and 20 years old... getting a new GM won't make them mature quicker. Believe it was posted in another thread, that in the last 20 years only 2 teams achieved to win the SC with their superstars on ELC's, so if that is what is expected from our GM, the bar is perhaps slightly high?
  3. Benning stated last year there would be 6-7 ‘youngsters’ promoted last year and this year. Fully expect OJ and either Raferty or Rathbone to be playing meaningful games with Canucks this season. Surely it must be close to swim or sink time... But I also think, they want to support OJ with a vet, just in case it gets a little sticky.
  4. While not a #1 D-man, Myers was thought of, as one of the best available FA D-men, if not the best, at the time he was signed. We needed a D-man with some size/strength, who could eat minutes. In the press most thought he would/could get $7/year... so don’t see it as being a bad contract. ( he was sorely missed during play offs, when he went down). Unless you wanted a sieve, Miller was a great signing. Played really well, and while Holtby has yet to lace his skates for us, he was exactly, what this organisation was needing leading up to the expansion draft. A shortish contract, that leaves him open to be exposed, while he is mentoring/sharing the work load with Demko. He was not signed with the expectations of him being the next Markstrom. $25 million on the bottom 2 lines??? How do you get that? Eriksson was not brought in to play on the bottom line. He’s there as his play has deteriorated beyond belief. Folks here complain about the length of contracts handed out to veteran players, but when Benning doesn’t resign Marky for 6x6M, Tanev $4x4.5, or Toffoli..... It must be wonderful to have the magic crystal ball, or even better to be able to pick and choose with hindsight. Benning is right in saying Vancouver is now a place, player wants to come to. The flat cap introduced as a result of empty hockey rings during this covid pandemic, can hardly be blamed on Benning. The 21-22 season will be interesting, and the 22-23 season is likely going to be the season, Canucks will have a real go at it... Why not just enjoy the ride? I know, I will...
  5. This is, where I see him as well. His draft position is without shadow of a doubt the catalyst for all these threads. I wonder if it has something to do with Virtanen not really wanting ti drop the gloves? Or could it be his shoulder never really recovered? Every time a hit is being laid, there is a fight afterwards, and I don't think that's Virtanen forte... We all expected more from JV, but again its was probably because we all saw the play offs as being the time, he would blossom but never fully did... I thought he played ok, except for a few real disappearing acts, but than again so did a lot of players Pearson, TT, Roussel, Brock, Gaudette, Sutter all at various stages... The one thing that would really disappoint me, would be JV showing up at next camp totally out of shape... other than that, I expect him to continue his progression.
  6. You said he was playing like a bigger version of MayRay with a better shot. MayRay was good enough to play lw in the SC finals... i’d take that any day, was what I said. With regards to his IQ for top six, think confidence would do the world of good... over a period of time. If JB really thought JV was a bum, why wouldn’t he just trade him? They all know there’s more to come from him. Was his play off spectacular? No, but it wasn’t a disaster neither, just not what people hoped to see... I think the only real issue is to get to engage each game. Nothing wrong with Hansens shot, but yeah probably a poor comparison to JV.
  7. Have to say, that if you could get a bigger Mason Raymond with a better shot for arounf 2.5m, I don’t know, what folks are so unhappy about. For the amound of $ he’s paid, I still believe, he’s worth it. I do agree its been frustrating to see the same issue arise 2 camps on the spin, where he turned up out of shape, and it gave reason to wonder if his heart was truly in it, but its not enough to suggest he doesn’t have hockey IQ. Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t the same said about Hansen, in the beginning of his career?
  8. Another JV bashing thread.... Bring back the real Apollo...
  9. Of course he should... and end all third world problems as well as find a cure for Cancer...
  10. Same place as all the moaners about lengthy contracts... except now it would be good to sign Marky to 6x6 and expose Demko, or an injury prone D-man to another 4 years contract.... catch my drift?
  11. Personally i think it was rather obvious we were in need of a punishing D-man or two. This together with the back log of youngsters waiting to get a chance kind of makes it a must to shift some of the top 4 players on D. I think Tan man probably has been our most consistant defender over the last 4-6 years, when he has been fit. And as much as I love Tanev, I think injuries could be playing a massive part over the next 4 years. Agree we need 1 top defender with some snarl to play with Hughes. Hopefully JB has got a plan. And OJ needs to be tested in the NHL if he is fit... If we get one tough defender this season, I’ll be ok with that. Next year Edler needs replaced, and at that time I hope JB and Green have tested a few of the rookie to see if they have it in them to nail a place in, what will be a quality side after next season. Zero doubt about that.
  12. So what do you suggest, he should have done with Marky? And do you think we had a great defense last year?
  13. Thanks Nux... some of the comments here...
  14. It'll be interesting to see, how we line up next season, but we need to see if any of the drafted players are good enough to have a seat at the table. And with stating the obvious, the defence was far from good enough during the play offs, so changes are needed. So all the crying about Benning not resigning Tanev is a bit off... In 2-3 years time I wouldn't want Tanev to eat up $4.5 mill. So if Tanev wanted term, which would be natural, I don't think he would be a good fit here... Same with Marky... the money in not the main problem, its the term... Marky wanted Term and protection... Benning had the chose, and decided he wanted Demko over Marky... Don't understand why some folk are flipping of at least those two decisions...
  15. Look especially forward to see, how they fare against tough opposition... There's 3 spaces available, with a further one most likely available next year... Will need some toughness on the back end...
  16. Agree 100%. Love Tanev, but we need to move forward. D needs upgraded, or at least we need to see, what youngsters can bring to the team. In 2 years only Hughes and Giraffe along with which ever youngster, who shows they belong, will be on the team. Expect some serious strength to be introduced as well... Don’t see Tanev as a fit in 3-4 years.
  17. While Tanev has been a warrior for us during the last decade, I think it was plain for all to see our D-Core needed upgraded. surely an upgrade is more than just replacing Stecher and Benn/Fanta with a couple of rookies... Can someone please explain how else Benning is going to upgrade his D core, if he resigns Tanev for 4 years at $4.5 mil each. Who else were he going to let go?
  18. so long Tan man. You were a warrior for us and will forever be thought fondly off. Good luck with the flames.
  19. Hahaha this is hilarious... Tanev is too expensive as he is injury prone... Benning didn’t sign Tanev its disaster. Markstrom wants too much money and too long a contract... Benning suck since he let him go... Toffoli is too old and wants too much money... Benning wasted all his money and can’t keep his FA players... Has Benning stated anywhere that’s your lot? Damned if he does, damned if he doesn’t...
  20. Well done JB not getting bullied or dragged in to an overpayment. Wonder how the haters are gonna spin this one...
  21. Great news. He earned it as the team unsung hero during play offs. Keep up the good work Motte.
