  1. He was drafted in 5th round... Lets just assume he totally surprised every single scout in every single organisation, by turning into the player he became....
  2. The credit for his attention goes to Hammerstrōm, and I don't have an issue with that. However, no mater how you cut or slice it, Benning called out Petey's name at the draft. Its as simple as that.... Benning had a lot of faults, but lets not change/forget history, just to make him look worse, than he was...
  3. Well I hope you are right about the bottom part about going to be top of the league And I think we say pretty much the same. If we could win the lottery now and draft Bedard (pipe dream, but...) then the next 3 years he will be on ELC. Maybe just maybe he'll sign an interim deal (unlikely) but even signing him for say 12M in 3 year would be covered by Brock and Garland... But just now draft Bedard and then get 2 top D's for Myers and whom ever else we can dump, and just fill the spaces with 1-2M wingers We could be competitive very quickly... Even the 2-4th pick could transfer this team. Imagine getting Michov over on ELC in 3 years... A Petey in his prime and a 21-22 year old generational; talent on an ELC together with Kuz QH and 2 top 4 defensive D-Men. We would really be rocking. It is true however, the longer it goes, the harder it is to find good supporting cast if you have a lot of money invested in your top players ... Toronto should have done exactly as you said. Oilers may have been able to hold on to both McD and Draisaitl but all the 5-6 supporting cast should be sold off to free cash for a top Dman or two... We all know the saying offence win games, but D wins championships...
  4. Bingo.... We have a winner...
  5. Now if that was the case, half of the GMs don't have a clue and their scouts neither. Benning could only cover so much, and despite what you say, he had enough save to accept Petey was the better player, and took him instead of the player 75% thought was going to be the better player... In the end he made the call.... Give him the credit he deserves...
  6. That may all be very true... but it doesn't change the fact, that the GM makes the 1st round pick, good or bad... What is astonishing, is how hard folks work to discredit the few good things Benning did for this franchise... I could carer less, who told Benning he should draft Petey or QH. He was the one, who picked them both at the draft table... Where is the evidence Benning over ruled his scouts regarding OJ? The pick was not out of the blue as you make it out to be... a lot of folks here on CDC was really high on OJ (mainly believing Tkachuk wouldn't be available), but in general the need to draft a Dman was a big then as it still is... so who exactly told Benning he should not draft OJ????
  7. Cmon Timrå, You gotta make up your mind... When its poor drafts it on Benning but when it is a good draft its on the scouts... The pick of the 1st round falls on the GM good or bad.... whether its scouts or Santa that talks them up...
  8. Yep, and FA would stay out of the hockey decisions.
  9. Hmmm.... Get what you are saying, but Not entirely sure about that. Once Kraken or Vegas wins a cup, I may change my mind. Fact is nearly all cup winner the last 15 years have had a few top picks on them. The Cap issues are down to poor management of the cap and extremely poor construction of the teams. In Oiler country and Toronto they have gone for a lot of gun slingers, where they would be far better off spending more on the D side. Both team actually do have he piece to severely improve their D, but chooses not to use them. Imagine TO 2 years ago putting Nylander and/ or Marner into play for top pairing Ds And Oilers could Maybe use Draiseitl as trade chip or similar, although I do agree, time is running out. Build from the net and out... we all know D takes longer, in general, than fwds so start with the D side when drafting instead of going fwds constantly ( hence I was after D at our drafting position last year). Regardless, while 10 really good players may do the trick, the real problem is to find 10 really good players. Free agency costs, and often doesn't work out well, and in trades you give to get, so that leaves drafting... and thats why sinking to the bottom in the first couple of years of a rebuild or recontruction of the team is an advantage.
  10. Yes he did part with them, but he should have done it earlier (if they were willing to let go of their NTCs and NMCs... As you rightly say, they had little to no value, when they started the purge of the squad. I was actually amazing the value he got from Kesler bearing in mind the almost impossible position he was put in. I do believe we have some good players, but they need better supporting players. Our D is weak, especially with the money invested in it... Regardless, I think JB get too much stick, for his time here.
  11. Yes I know and agree... The club was loyal to the Sedins, and understandably so, but it would have been in the clubs best interest to get rid of everyone around them... Benning was given a rough hand to start with, and with the owners not really wanting a rebuild, we stayed in the mushy middle going one step forward and two back... A shame really as Benning did well with his drafting, despite was some think... One can only imagine how the team would have looked if he had been the go ahead to rebuild 7-8 years ago... or Gilles for that matter, although his drafting was poor into the extreme, which he even agreed to himself afterwards... Problem is we have always had 1 or two good players, to keep us good enough too not entirely sink to the bottom...
  12. Well doesn't look like he was offered another gig, so something obviously wasn't right. He did almost bring us the holy grail, and one can only wonder if FA had said ok, when both Gillis and Torts said they needed a clear out, where we would have been today... The problem seems to be laying with the owners... squarely
  13. What should have happen in 2014=2015ish was a total clear of the decks, and sink to the bottom for a couple of years at least... A McD, Draiseitl or Matthews would have looked good in a Canucks Uniform.
  14. Demko and maybe Silovs
  15. This was probably the biggest issue all along... He needed someone better than Linden as a PoHo... He was left to swim with way too many rookies in all positions.
  16. The Miller move was a good move... But the timing was possibly wrong. The time to rebuild properly was after Mike Gilles got canned... they should have sold everything the could, and started from scratch... The is little doubt, FA didn't want that, and as a result, Benning was left to chase overpriced FAs and prospects, that were already deemed not really good by other teams, for picks... The OEL and Garland trade was bad, but some people on CDC seems to ignore history... the two seasons leading up to the trade just about everyone was complaining about having to pay over the odds for 3rd and 4th liners non stop. It is almost as if Benning had held on to these players 1 more year, and tried to trade them at the TDL instead, all the issues we have now, had been non existing.... As for letting Tanev and Marky go.... Marky v Demko has been gone through endlessly, and Tanev was in just about 1 million trade proposals leading up to it, because ' he was injury prone, not worth his salary', etc etc... right up to he left. His replacement was top pairing in Vegas, when he came here, and I don't remember anyone being unhappy about him being brought in that summer. He didn't work out here, but believe he did fine in his next club, so whether it was a coaching issue or what, who knows... Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but for all the crying over some of the issues under Benning, is absurd... He did cock things up and was needed to be replaced, but which GM will come into a club with nothing on the shelves and all the ageing players on NMCs or NTCs and make it competitive without being able to strip it down... If goes higher that Benning....
  17. Well he did hit on Brock, and Demko... The OJ pick can be debated until the cows comes in, whether it was injuries or just a bad pick (yes should have taken Tkachuk)... So I think the only really poor pick was Virtanen. Petey and QH were home runs, and despite the 'it was the easy picks' they still had to be made'. And other GMs didn't pick them... Agree 100% Benning would have had far more to work with, if he hadn't traded all his picks for young players, but real question is, was he allowed to sink to the bottom and plainly tank or did FA say no to that? If ever there was a time to tank it was after the Kesler trade. At that stage they should have traded everyone with a heart beat, and gone for top picks instead... Mathews or McD would have looked great in a Canucks sweater...
  18. The way Beau has been playing while on Peteys wing, he may not be going anywhere...
  19. Flipping love Kuzmenko.... what joy he brings to the team and his team mates. Always a smile on his face... he is an absolute peach... What an unbelievable pick up by this management. Just Bananas....
  20. depends on return... re-sign during off season... beggars can't be choosers. if there is a good deal to be had, they need to take it...
  21. If Schenn doesn't get traded, he should be made interim C....
