Possibly. But it’s not like the Oiler were really bad at developing. They just really never were able to build a winning team around those players. Hall produced at .86ppg, RNH is a 60 point player, eberle was a 60 point player, Leon is basically a ppg, mcdavid is over a ppg, klefbom is a top pairing D. Nurse is having a breakout year playing 21 min per game, really the only ones that didn’t develop was paajarvi and yakupov. That and the terrible picks outside the first round. I guess the point I’m trying the make is we all like to make fun of the oil (which to me just slightly below making fun of flames on my fav to do list) but when you see the lack of talent taken after the players they picked its not as bad like say the NYI who in: 2011 took stroke 2 spots before scheifele 2013 took G.reinhart right before Reilly, lindholm and dumba went of the board 2014 took dal colle 3 spots before Nylander and Ehlers got selected.
-
True but that says more about how little talent there was in the years they bottomed out more than is says to do with oilers drafting. I mean even using hindsight we can see that nothing they would have done differently (in terms of top picks) would have really altered their current franchise state. In a sense, it was lucky that happened, had they land a core talent in one of those years they likely don’t get McDavid in 2015. If we we want to talk about how bad their drafting was, then we can look at there picks outside the first round and see how little amount of nhl talent came out of that.

The one thing that might be worth looking at though is did the Oilers really miss on any of these players. Sure it’s fun to make fun of them for their players not turning into stars but were there even star players available at their spots? 2009, Paajarvi – Ellis – De Hann - Kassian = Passing on Ellis is a miss 2010, Hall – Seguin – Guddy – Johnansen = 3 of those players are all pretty even 2011, RHN – Landeskog – Hubrerdeau – Larsson = Again all pretty even 2012, Yakupov – Murray – Galchenyuk – G.Reinhart = None of those players are more than average 2013, Nurse – Ristolainen – Horvat – Nichushkin = Risto and Bo are core pieces, Nurse is having bit of a breakout season this year but not sure he will ever become that core guy, but he is a solid top 4 D. 2014, Leon – Bennett – Dal Colle – Virtanen = Leon is hands down the best and a core piece. 2015, McDavid – Eichel -Strome – Marner = No question here 2016, Puljuarvi – Juolevi – Tkachuk – Keller = Still early to decide as all players are still developing and all four could become core pieces. So really they might have only missed on 2 years, every other year they did get “debatably” the best player in their range.

Obviously I wasn't going to post every single occurrence, if you want I can post more? LIke the Byron hit from behind on daniel that put him on stretcher, hanzal hit on sedin that broke his ribs, or grabo boarding on hank. It's common, and sedin's are tough SOB's that often play through injuries. Targeting a star player is extremely common, especially when the games start to matter, it's not always intentional but the line is often crossed. Yesterday Allan comment on brock saying he reminds him of tarasenko, Well Tarasenko takes a ton of abuse, Brock is going to start seeing some more of this focus, and we are going to start seeing a lot of questionable hits on him. Teams want to win and shutting down a star player does that..
-
I don't know if it's jealous as much it is players wanting to play hard against a superstar and often cross the line. Dirty hits on teams star players is an extremely common thing.

What he’s been doing is pretty darn impressive. But when you consider a guy like kane who’s not known for a goal scoring so he doesn’t show up in that list but he’s easily a top 5 RW. Same with wheeler (who I think is way too often underrated)
-
He's a great goal scorer, there's no denying but there's a difference between being a top 5 goal scoring winger and a top 5 winger.

Who pissed in your cereal? Can people not have an adult conversation. It’s the Christmas season. Thats exactly what rubgy stated. We when down one road and once we realized we were heading up hill. We change and took another route. It does come into play when you want to give credit when it’s not due. Not everything can be part of the master plan. Not everything works out as expected so why do some feel the need to? Well when people want to chalk up finishing bottom 5 as part of JBs master plan from day one it’s completely fair to call them out on it. The plan has changed. Nothing negative about stating that... but it has changed. Ownership gave a direction, it failed and we moved on to the next direction.

Well as the teams slipped in standing there position was changed. Before those picks move out we’re to speed up the rebuild “retool on the fly” so that this team could remain playoff competitive. (I know I used to be part of the crowd). But As the teams slipped up and debunked that argument it’s become “we needed to fill the age gap to protect our youth”. The funny part is. Many of those picks were moved when everyone would admit that our cupboards were bare.” Haha “we needed vey to fill that age gap so that the player we drafted two years later isnt thrown in the nhl before they are ready.”
-
Tas didnt think so infact he gave a mature reasonable response. Because the argument isn’t about obtaining new assets. It’s about not giving up them. They are two entirely different topics, no one is mad about getting a 2nd back for garrison. But people are mad about moving that 2nd for vey. How you Obtain vs how you spend are different conversations. No worries. And thats your opinion. Mine is that had JB had another 3x 2nd, 2x 3rd, 2x 4th, 5th and a 6th that he would have found more talent than we have to show for today. He’s done well with his drafting. I’d like to see more of it. Again that’s your opinion. I would only argue that baertschi is the only player with higher value for the pick we gave up. “I value picks and that’s how we’re going to rebuild this thing,” he said. “If we could have recouped draft picks we would have done that.” https://globalnews.ca/news/2548898/we-tried-hard-canucks-fail-to-move-hamhuis-vrbata-at-deadline/ Even our own gm believes the way to rebuild is through the draft. Depends on the spot. 31st over vs having 32nd and 33rd overall. I’ll take the two 2nds.
-
I’m not implying anything. I’ve ask for clarity on how moving picks for players was focused on the future and not for the short term. Considering the pieces and picks we gave up, had we not made those moves I believe that Jb would have more to show for the future than he currently does today. Ps Larsen is long gone in the khl, not Utica.. Why is it about offsetting? Does ending even bring you the same possibility of ending positive with #of picks. Why are people concerned about being even? What’s better having 7 (even) picks in a draft year or 13 picks?
-
If I remember right. You were saying not long ago that Canucks direction has changed from trying win mode to rebuilding mode. Yes that direction was made by ownership but it has change nevertheless. Are you now saying that the plan has always been the same since the hire of JB or do you still believe that we have saw a change in focus (caused by ownership)?

ah so i'm not a fan because I didn't like the idea of signing a soft, inconsistent player to a three year deal. I'm not a fan because I said two years was the max i would like to go with him because I didn't think we need a 3 year stopgap in which the player himself needs to get sheltered in order to produce like he did last year..Hmm so having an opinon on the matter makes me not a fan? Or perhaps you just can't handle someone having a different opinion the topic, an opinion that you argued against page after page with, an opinion that is turning out to be correct. Yep, you sure called me out, i'm glad you felt Gagner getting a bit of 3on3 ice time when 25% of the core roster is injured made you feel justified. Your reply was nothing more than a trollish attempt of cherry picking one game (under abnormal circumstances) to get a response from me, it wasn't well thought out, logical, and it didn't even have anything to do with the point i made in my post, I'm not going to put any time in to such childish games, or posters for that matter. We all know how much you dislike Tkachuk. Should I reply to you any time he puts up a multi point game? Should I come back and reply to you every time Gagner lays a stinker? Grow up Rob.
-
Holy crap you weren’t just trolling. Just wow. I especially love how you used the one game in which a 1/4 of the starting roster is hurt to justify your point. “Ignore the first quarter of the season, this one single game helps my point.” Haha good grief Charlie Brown you crack me up. Um what? Keep digging that hole. Sheltering has nothing to do with a player being a failure. I want our rookies to be sheltered when they enter the league. Does that mean I think they are failures. Last year gagner was extremely sheltered and put up 50 points. The entire hockey world admits he was sheltered, so they think a 50 point player is a failure? Nope. You need to rethink that understanding you have about the term “sheltered” or perhaps stop getting so triggered about every “true” statement I make and assume what I’m implying means something else. Looks like your trolling yourself.
-
Aint got time for trolls. Pedal your nonsense else where.
-
isn’t it sad that I can’t tell if you’re being serious or just trolling.
-
Yep I was too and when I expressed my concern that 3 years isn’t ideal and that two would have been better Jb’s defense crew felt the need to argue page after page with me telling me I was wrong. Yet no one wanted to take my friendly wager that he’d be under the 40 point mark. Theres a reason he’s bounced around the league so much despite putting up some decent numbers. He needs extreme sheltering to produce and he doesn’t offer a whole lot in other areas. I thought he was a decent stop gap but would be unessesary heading into year 2 of his contact. A rebuilding team can only shelter so many players. I’d rather it be our youth making the pro transition being sheltered than a 28 year old stop gap

What position was pettersson drafted at? I guess drafting top 5 isn’t all that bad.
-
That’s a very missleading post skewed by cherry picking numbers though. You include 2017 yet all the players in 2017 have haven’t even been in the league for over 30 games. How are they supposed to win a cup in that time frame. I don’t think anyone expects a team to go from bottom of the league to cup winner over night. So listing the players drafted in in the last few years doesn’t really help the point either. Pull those same numbers from 2001-10 draft years. Only 9 teams had 3 or more top 5 picks and they represent 9 of the last 12 Stanley cups won. But in the end, Drafting in the top 5 doesn’t guarantee you a cup but it does produce you the highest odds of landing a key piece to building a cup contender. A peice like Pettersson is the result of a top 5 draft pick. Hes going to be a very important piece for us into turning this team into a cup contender. How many any people here would be willing to replace pettersson with someone taken in the 15-29 range last draft. anyone who would prefer to keep pettersson and is against obtaining top 5 picks is a hypocrite.

Except most players could care less about there team drafting another player that is likely going to be competeting with them for a job. And the upcoming ufas have little invested to try and risk injury which could cost them $ in July first. As JR mentioned the quality wouldn’t be worth it. We see how bad the product is for teams out of the post season in the final weeks leading up to summer. Most players are already checked out and have there summer vacations booked.
