Kings got Kopitar at 11th overall, 12 years later they got 2.0 in Vilardi. He's going to suck to play against the next 10 years. -

The fact that you watched him play means nothing because you are nobody... Fabbro went 16th overall not top 3. good comparison..... What ever will you do when Makar doesn't develop into the next Karlsson/Keith..... Again at least i'm going to parties... -

I think OJ is better than Hieksanen but i was agreeing that it's a similar circumstance to last year. Last year I was willing to take the high risk, high ceiling D at the 5 spot in sergachev. But those players high top pairing ceilings with top four floors, This year I really don't want a D at 5. To much of a gap better than floor and ceilings. They could be a top pairing D, or they could be a depth, fringe NHLer. We have the ability to guarantee ourselves to walk out of this draft with one of the 3 main centers (glass,Casey,Gabe), now is not the time to roll the dice. -

Keith never played in the BCHL at the same age, Keith played at 16 & 17 and then went to play in a higher comp in the CCHA during his draft year. Kieth wasn't drafted out of the BCHL. Makar is one of the older players being drafted he's almost 10 months old than someone like Vilardi. -

I'd say it was the same thing about Juolevi last year. He was the safest bet. Chychrun, Sergachev, Bean and McAvoy all had higher ceiling but more risk, which is what made Juolevi ranked so high, he was the safest bet but 3-4 years down the road "if" those other player develop and reach their ceilings they'd be ranked higher. -

Foote has the body but not the NHL skillset as of yet. It's a combination. I guarantee he will struggle in his first year in NCAA. to the point where people will question his ability. It will be up to him to see if he can bounce back. A lot can happen in 5 years. Hence why there's so much risk around him. -

Actually there is a huge difference. Players with less risk/worry about their skill sets transitional tend to go higher. Why do you 1st round picks make the NHL just before the other rounds. Why do you think 1st overall picks tend to jump in the nhl immediately post draft. Lots of elite players get picked in later rounds but they have higher risks which is why teams take them with less valued picks. The players skillsets are always there, but it's risk that makes players rise or drop. For example, Kucherov has undeniable skill but he had such a high risk factor that teams didn't want to take the chance that he didn't ever play in the NHL with their first round pick so he fell to the 2nd round. Makar is has far more risk than the other players in in the top 5 because of his competition. In fact I would rank Makar and Walsh at the same level. Both skillets are close to being on par, both played and dominated in lesser league. One is slated to be a late 2nd the other is a top 5. The only difference is hype and visibility. Yes there will be as much whinging as the Jake pick when we watch the players passed on become impact players and Makar struggle to be an NHL regular. -

Agree'd, both from high paid executives and the fans, It's a double standards, If the player turns out, it's "we are gods at drafting", but if they don't it's "drafting is a crap shoot".... -

Yeah you will never fully agree with every decision but sometimes people feel that a certain move (or the culmination of a few moves) had a huge impact on the future. The wrong move today could set canucks back a few years in develop, where the right move could speed us up by a few years... Nothing is worse than taking player A and him becoming "meh", while watching player B (the player you wanted) go on to be a star. -

Not necessary true. Everything is a product of time and space. In tighter games players aren't able to open up their speed. With stronger defensive teams, players aren't able to find open lanes to use their shot. With faster and more positional sound teams, players have less time to make their decisions. With bigger and more physically competition, the mental aspect starts to kick in. I'm honestly hoping that Makar is off the board by #5 so we don't have to be left with the risk of taking him. His make or break will come next year around the half way point in the season in Umass. He's going to struggle out of the gate, as most players do and it's going to be even harder for him since he's got a bigger quality of competition jump to adjust to. If he can stick with it and not loose his confidence he will hopefully bounce back and continue his development path towards being an NHLer, if he doesn't it will be a long road for him. -

It's less to do with cheering for a new team and more to do with completely loosing faith in the current mgmt group. You will still cheer for the team and hope they win but don't believe they will be able to accomplish anything until someone more capable will be brought it. Kind of how i felt with WD as a coach. I still cheered for the canucks but had no faith in the coach and knew that the team needed to move on from him if they wanted to get anywhere. I'm guessing to what Barry means is that he would feel the same way about mgmt. -

It was only three years ago size and speed was the biggest need., The league changes, teams adjust and it results in a different style, it's always changing. -

I don't think that's a great analogy since skill set varies against comp. Dale wiese looked like Gretzky in the dutch league. Was that same skillset able to translate into the NHL. Jankowski looked like an elite center against high school kids, has that same elite skillset been able to translate into the NHL. Turris ripped apart the BCHL and was drafted 3rd overall as a franchise defining player, has his skill set been able to translate into the NHL? He's been good but he's not an elite #1 center. There are countless examples of players who looked elite in lesser leagues but never could translate that elite skillset into the NHL level. Skill set transition is all about development, and predicting how an 18 year old will develop is an extremely tough task. That's why players who've proven their skill sets and are more sure things tend to go at higher picks. Just look at all the #1 picks that jumped immediately into the NHL the following season, there's less risk about their skillsets translating and thus tend to get picked higher.. Sam Cosentino was on the radio today, and he feels Makar is the real deal but, the only reason he's getting this hyped up, is simply because of the fad the league is in right now with mobile D. Two years ago he would have been ranked outside the top 10 because of the risk and size factor. The hype of the current fad is trumping, the risk card, not just for Makar but for the entire draft he feels this year will have the most players under 6'0" drafted in the first round in the last 10 years. -
