2017 NHL Draft - Chicago, Illinois June 23-24 2017

Makar will not be even close to Karlsson, Karlsson is a two time norris winner, if Makar was going to be the next karlsson it wouldn't even be a discussion of him in the top 5, he'd be a lock for the 1st overall. realistically, If, that's if, everything goes well in his development Makar could be a Gostisbehere type. -

Completely different. Why you might ask...They had proved themselves at higher levels of competition Prior to being drafted, Ehlers QMJHL gp 63 p104 WJC-18 gp5 p11 WJC-20 gp5 p6 Nylander Allsvenskan gp17 p19 SHL gp22 p7 WJC-18 gp7 p16 That's quite a bit different than 75 points in the Alberta Junior A. -

It's too early to determine if virtanen is a bust but its not too early to come to the conclusion that he will never be as good as ehlers of nylander. Im curious to who the other small skilled forwards that Canucks had that made players like nylander and ehlers not a team need. Shinkaruk? -

That type of logic was the same reason Canucks passed on players like nylander and ehlers. https://mobile.twitter.com/taj1944/status/842191604790177792 -

That's not how some people saw it. "If you watch the NHL playoffs, you need size and strength to get to the net, stay in front of the net, to deflect pucks, to get rebounds," "We were looking for that style of players and we were happy who we ended up with. When asked aobut picking that type of player over skill.... "We're going to get back to a meat and potatoes style of in the trenches. Play hard, So we really didn't consider that" -

According to who, the people pumping him up. He's comp is extremely watered down, the only overagers still in that league are the ones that either couldn't cut it in the WHL and came back to play, or the ones that never had any scholarship offers, They way the last 5 year in that league have went (and the BCHL), anyone who's any good, gets plucked out to play NCAA before their 19th birthday. Just like Fabbro, Jost, & Cholowski did last year in the BCHL. Or like last years AJHL top draft eligible D Pasichnuk who put up even more impressive numbers than Makar. It's not bigger faster and strong, in fact is the opposite, even Ferraro stated the from him making the jump from Ontario Junior A to the USHL. Now you compare that to a player like Vilardi where on any give night there's 20 out of 40 players, already have their rights are owned NHL clubs. The WJAC is only eligible to junior A players, so it's the same level of competition just on a world level. Had he did that in the u18 or WJC then maybe he would have proved something but he didn't so it's still high risk. Turris destroyed the BCHL apart, people thought he was going to be a franchise player and ended up going 3rd overall because of it. Sure he's a decent NHL, but he's not even close to being considered elite. He's barley passable for a #1 c. It took him 8 years to crack 30 points. He's the perfect example of game not translating as smoothly into the NHL. People act as if Makar is the only talented, offensive skating defenseman in this draft. Plenty of young D players have that dynamic skill set but it all comes down to will that game translate. Typically D men like him don't go in the first round (see; Gostisbehere, Letang, Vatanen, Montour, Barrie and recently Mete) simply due to the risk/reward. Since they are a higher risk, if they don’t produce they become reliabilities. That's also why D men who have nearly similar skill sets in this year’s draft like Ferraro, Walsh & Jokiharju are all expected to be taken in the late second areas. The biggest thing that separates the players is hype, 4 games shouldn’t define a players draft value, but it so often does. Had Walsh. Draft hype can greatly over inflate a player or lack of hype could hurt them (see Chychrun last year). In the last 10 years only 3 D under 6'0" were drafted in the top 10. It does occasionally happens but usually that's when they have far less risk, and have proven themselves at the higher levels. Reilly, Dumba, & Hickey, and even in Hickey’s case he hasn’t really translated that well at the NHL level D are already extremely hard to predict there development, not if you consider that and the fact that he’s even a bigger unknown due to the competition you have zero way of being able to predict how his game would translate. It’s so hard to judge a player dominated a lesser league. Last summer I played against Ferklund in a charity rec league tournament and if you wouldn’t have known you would have thought he was a 60 goal scorer in the NHL. Dale Wiese was known at the dutch Greztky from how he was able to play in that lesser league, yet he couldn’t even crack the 30 point mark in the NHL. And the best example is Jankowski who dominated high School hockey to the point where flames thought he was going to be the best player to come out of the draft. He still looks like he will be an NHLer but not the elite 1st line center flames pegged him to become, and instead of the flames taking Hertl, Ceci, Teravainen, Maatta, they took a high risk player. A player that could have been had in the second round. He's going to the NCAA where he will be compared directly with his future teammate and draft eligible Mario Ferraro. The last thing this fan base needs is a player canucks could have taken in the 3rd round out performing the 3rd overall pick. -

Sure stack the D, just don't use a top 5 pick on a high risk player. Josi 38th overall subban 43rd overall Ekholm 102nd overall Ellis was the highest at 11th overall. The only top 5 D they've taken was a can't miss player like Jones. Also with the way the current NHL is being played, The style changes quite often. Yeah with the way the NHL has looked the last few playoffs, the latest trend is to get faster and more skilled so these types of players are getting more attention. But it's still a risk drafting players based on the current trend of the NHL. It was only 3 years ago meat and potatoes was the fad, due to the success of the Bruins and Kings. It's safe to say that styles change. Teams plan and adjust to find weakness about the style which causes the game evolve. By the time the player you draft is fully developed the game might be completely different. -

Two different people.....Vilardi never played in the AJ or the WJAC. -

I don't see vilardi getting pass the av's to be honest. and I don't buy the hype on the kid dominating the AJ, i personally like Walsh or Ferraro better, exact same skill sets, both were able to dominate lesser leagues, and less of a risk taking them since they will be in the 50-70 range. Exposure is the main thing that sets them apart take away his 4 points game in WJAC and he's a mid to late first round pick. -

Maybe, if he takes Makar I'm completely off the JB bandwagon. Too big of a gamble to use at 5, especially when there is similar players to be had in the second round -

also By the sounds of it, If Dallas keeps their pick, stars will take Mittel, and with Av's being interested in hiring Rychel, needing a 200ft, top 6 right hand shot Vilardi is almost a sure thing for going Colorado. Leaves canucks taking Glass or Pettersson at 5. Probably why they were the two chosen to have interviews in van. -

Yeah, the only way I could see JB making that type of deal is if he really believe Hischier will be a franchise guy, but if that's the case it would make you wonder why NJ would be willing to move from him. -

Then take Vilardi at 5 and Reilly Walsh at 55, fills both needs. -

Don't seeing NJ interested in that, they already have 11 picks in the draft this year. 7 picks in the first 4 rounds. I would assume since they stated they have no interest in moving Schneider they'd want some players who can help them start to win now. -

Yeah while I agree with you that I wouldn't want to pay that high of a cost, Tanev + 5th overall is likely what it would cost. To me it's the cost of moving up vs the value that tanev could bring back in a separate deal is Hischier alone better than 5th overall + the return tanev could net us in a different deal (Prospect + pick in the 7-15 range) which could be something like: Vilardi/Mittel/Glass + Raddyssh/Koekkoek + Foote/Pettersson If Hischier was a Matthews or Laine type talent, then yeah maybe it would be worth it but I don't know if i see that in Nico. -

Hughes is better than Makar and hughes likely will be a 7-15th. That's how good nexts years D core will be. Merkley, Dahlin, Wilde, Bouchard, and Boqvist are also going to be players thought to be top pairing guys. Svechnikov wont play center he's too offensively focused, that's why he hasn't played center at all in the last year, and Tkachuk is as much of a center as granlund is...which he isn't.... Veleno is the only real center projected in the top 10. Next year has way more projected top pairing D than #1 C. -

Next year only has 2 centers projected to go in the top 15, yes things can change but. Next years draft is loaded with defense. And yes plenty could go wrong if you take makar, he could never pan out and then you just wasted a 5th overall pick. -

Assuming we only have the 5th overall pick in this year’s draft, here is how I would like it to go. Want canucks to draft: Vilardi Am happy if the canucks end up drafting: Mittelstadt, Glass, Pettersson, Liijegren Ok with canucks drafting but will be disappointed: Tippet, Necas, Heiskanen Will be completely off the JB bandwagon if he uses our only top 5 pick on: Makar, Rasmussen, Tolvanen
