  1. You mean TSN said that. no way, Why would those "cough" Toronto homers "cough" say something like that. It's not like they aren't trying to distract local "toronto" viewers about the disaster the leafs are in. Our prospect pool is as deep as it's been in the last 10 years, Deeper than the leafs, deeper than the flames, who've misses playoffs 4 years straight. But yet lets talk about canucks and make fun of their team. That does seem like an eastern media thing to do..
  2. Ha. the only critical error out of the mentioned was the deal for Ballard. We must be really missing Ehrhoff, his long contract and his big 6 goals this year Maybe the critical error was letting the injury prone Salo and his whopping 4 goals leave the team. Was it the loss of draft picks (which one was it again?) Fox, Tanev, Lack, Eriksson, Stanton, Lain Because It sure wasn't us getting Kassian or trading away Sturm and Samuelson. Both deals are turning out to be in our favour.
  3. vancouver has easily the worst defence in the league. Garrison should be the first out of this town, the guy can't skate
  4. Why do zero of our players not finish their checks. How is our team going to cause turn overs without anyone throwing their body around.
  5. Zero GM’s would have known that they were changing the CBA to punish existing contracts. It should have been illegal to change or the contracts should have to be renegotiated anyway as they were signed under previous rules where the loop hole was still legal. Reality is it should have been grand fathered in rather than punishing the teams who still were technically operating legally. Contract length, term and yearly variance were all grand fathered in without punishment why was the retirement clause not? The argument in itself is weak. Luongo’s play over the last two years had more to do with the value of Luongo than his contract. 2 years of back up goalies outplaying him, subpar GAA, sup par SA%, aging with previous groin injuries doesn’t equal to a high return, especially in a goalie market. As much as people would love to believe he was worth 3 first round picks, he simply wasn’t. Player + Prospect + pick, that’s what Gillis was asking for, We got everything but the pick, a pick that would have been a second round at the high point anyways. If everyone wants to think of this trade as a failure over a second round pick than go ahead, you’re really wasting time. “Gillis didn’t get enough for two elite goalies” Well he didn’t have two elite goalies, he had a young, high end potential goalie with less than 100 started games in the NHL (very similar to Bernier, who is 3 years younger and on a cheaper contract). And an gaining vet who hasn’t put up top end numbers for a few years. Canucks also had the ability to move both goalies with high end depth waiting in the farm. Lack + Horvat bring more to this team and a better future than just Cory alone. The Cody trade also allowed us to use our second first round pick to go after a high risk/ high reward pick. We still have to wait and see how that turns out. Only time will deal if we got a steal, or a long term project. Same can be said about Lack + Matthias, Markstrom is the high end risk, that could potentially make this trade become even more lopsided in canucks favour. Problem with canucks fans is they are so impatient and don’t have no imagination to look at the future. What happened when Gillis traded Cody for Kassian, people were screaming for his head? Two years later and now people are starting to see Kassians upside and what he can bring to this team over Hodgson. People were already call Jensen a bust before he turned 20 because he wasn’t an NHL regular. 3-4 years down the road and canucks could look like a completely different team, people would no longer be crying about the loss of Luo and Cory.
  6. “IF” canucks go 6-0 = 91pts 6 games remaining *1 road game NYR LA ANH COL *EDM CAL Min = 87pts 2 games (4pts) to clinch 7 games remaining in 14 days *4 road games *LA *CHI *PIT WPG *BOS STL NSH Phx = 84pts 3.5 games (7pts) to clinch 7 games remaining in 13 days 3 road games WPG *LA EDM *CBJ *NSH SJ DAL Dal = 83pts 4 games (8pts) to clinch 8 games remaining in 13 days *5 road games *WSH *CAR *TB *FLA NSH CBJ STL *PHX I say MIN and PHX take the final two spots, Dallas has a lot of games in a short amount of time and they are on the road a lot. Phx has the easiest schedule and MIN is just too far ahead for Dallas to catch. Could be a very exciting last game of the season to which comes down to Phx and Dal. Could be winner makes it. In the east I see DET and WSH take the final two spots. TO is in a tail spin and CBJ have 8 games in 12 days (tightest stretch of games since 1976). Exciting to see playoffs come right down to the wire.
  7. Since burrows and Jensen has were put into the line up, but at the same time kassian has 6 points in his last 3
  8. Torts has made some decision that are questionable, one of the obvious is the lack of PP time he's given Kassian. We have one of the worst PP in the league and yet very little has changed to try new things. We've struggled to score goals and yet our forth highest scored see's no PP time. What's up with that? The fact that he's 4th on the team in scoring would show that he's earned it. Any time he's had PP he's been the one who's controlled the zone and set up the PP. He's big, he's got great hands, and decent vision yet he puts out hansen who has limited offensive abilities gets out there way more. It makes no sence in my mind. The team needs goals, that should equal, putting out offensive players who can score in more offensive area's. If the youth is the future, and Kassian is supposed to be part of that, start giving him the opportunities to break out.
  9. Hansen was UFA last year, so MG really had two options, sign him before that season ended or let him walk for nothing. It would look terrible to sign him and then trade him that offseason. I agree he is a bit redundent, but because of this his value was never really that high. Every team has players that can be used like Hansen, He's not a offensive threat or a physical presence, he's a typical 3rd liner that works hard and is good defensively. I wouldn't mind seeing him moved to open up more roster spots for youth but I wouldn't expect much in return, He seems to be more of a package add on then a trade centerpiece.
  10. Who do we cheer for on sat? PHX or MIN? PHX is 1 point closer to us, but MIN has the tougher schedule If we somehow could catch MIN with 3 straight wins (in regulation) we’d have the tie breaker. Either way we can’t have this game go into OT.
  11. Wait 3-4 more years that booth trade might turn out even better in our favour
  12. Right now they do, but if we are going to catch them we'd need to win 3 games. 3 ROW's and we'd beat them in the tie breaker
  13. With Smith out and the last 9 games building up in pressure PHX could stumble. I'm hoping Smith tries to come back too soon with a nagging injury and it affects his play. We need to gain three games on them in a short amount of time, but crazier things have happened. Hopefully Cory does his old team a favour and shuts the door on thursday. Devils are still in the mix as well, a loss on thursday would almost seal it for them so they will be desperate and their next 4 games are not against the strongest teams so the devils will need to win on thursday. PHX plays the wild on saturday. After the wild loss to us and likely the blues after they will be playing their best hockey against PHX in hopes they don't catch them. That's two games canucks can take advantage of and by the end of saturday if we go on a role we'd be tied (they'd still have a game in hand) with the coyotes for the final wild card spot with six games left.
  14. Great Summary +1 One small detail I think is worth noting. Everyone likes to talk about how terrible the Booth trade was but there was another piece that came back in the Booth trade that is really showing some promise as well.
  15. Honestly good, I watch other teams too as I have centre ice. But there’s a difference by watching a team and cheering for a team. Over the last 5 years I’ve also been cheering for the caps in the east. Watching them and getting to know all there players I’ve realized that they have the similar problems this team has. They have D that make dumb mistakes like Edler, they have stars that don’t show up every game. One stretch they look like the best team in the league, the next they look like the worst. Every team has this. Take last year as an example. Canucks were still a top team, if we got blown out of a game by a bottom team, this board would be filled with “this team isn’t good enough to win”, “this team doesn’t have what it takes if we get beat but bottom team”. In fact lately people are still using the NYI loss as justification to why were are not good enough. Well ANA got beat by the flames 7-2 two weeks ago. You still hear the same people whining about this team saying the ducks are elite even though they have their problems as well. Ducks are 4-4-2 in their last 10, they are having terrible scoring problems as Perry is the only one scoring, but because people don’t watch them on a regular basis or cheer for them, they only see the good and not the “holes” which every team has. Go cheer for the Hawks, Bruins, Ducks, Sharks, or even Penguins, you’ll still have games and stretches that drive you insane and frustrate you, for the same reasons people complain about this team
  16. Did Sj get the better end of the deal? No SJ got fleeced. An almost identical situation could be said about Luongo deal last year, canucks were desperate to move a goalie (specifically Luongo) to get under the lowering cap. Gillis couldn't get anything worth value for Luongo, so he traded Schneider instead, with a decent return. But I can already assume because it was Gillis you'd like to spin it around and say Gillis got fleeced under the same circumstances SJ faced, to get under the cap. So what is it? Are you going to admit SJ got fleece? Or was Gillis justified and made a good deal in the Cory trade.
  17. Your absolutely right it's Gillis' fault Henrik, Daniel, Kesler, Tanev, Santo, and Burrows have all missed significant amounts of time this season. He should have prepared for that right, the fact that we are only 3 points out of a playoff spot just goes to show how good this teams depth is without our stars. Tell me what team wouldn’t be in the same situation with their top 4 forwards. What would the hawks look like without Toews, Sharp, Hossa and Kane. It’s ridiculous how people throw that statement out, Yeah I guess because Gillis hasn’t kept this team as an elite contender for 5+ years he needs to be fired. Yep this team is way worse off then what he inherited. Considering the year before he became Gm the team finished with 88pts and Raymond was our top prospect. Why do some of you even cheer for the canucks? The only time you see their posts is when they are saying something negative about this team. Look at the GDT thread yesterday there was countless users calling this team a joke and filling this board with negativity when canucks were down 2-0. As soon as canucks took the lead, guess what, they disappeared. It wouldn’t matter if this team had Jesus has the GM and he pulled off unimaginable trades and won back to back cups, people would still find something to complain about.
  18. Hard to argue with Chiarelli and Bowman, but if you want to bring up the fact the Gillis has inherited the core from Nonis/burke than the same argument can be said about Bowman, when he took over his team already had Seabrook, Keith, Kane, Toews, Sharp, Ladd, Byfulien, Brouwer and Campbell, bolded is still the core today. His biggest addition was signing Hossa and drafting Saad, Shaw and potentially Teravainen, if he makes an impact, good move none the less. What has Dale Tallon done that’s so good for the panthers other than finish near the bottom of the league each 3 out of 4 years (including this year) and stack up with draft picks. It’s all good to say he’s done good things by drafting in the top 5 each year and the teams future is looking good, but until a team puts numbers on the win column his time as a GM there is still a failure. People have been saying the same thing about the Oilers for the last 4 years, that they will be a contending team soon. 7 years of playoff drought and hasn’t happen yet. saying Steve Yzerman a better GM is laughable, what facts would you have to back up that statement. I'm not saying he's terrible but his record doesn't stack up that well Bolts last year were the 2nd worst team in the league, they have a bounce back year, this year and suddenly Stevie Y is a top 5 GM. Ask St. Louis how he felt about that team and there management. Further to that what happens Callahan doesn’t re-up with the Bolts, It could all very well be for a mid to high 1st round pick in exchange for their captain. I guess that’s getting full value. Imagine what people would say about Gillis is we traded Sedin for that. I don’t even know how you want to compare drafting, Look at where he’s drafted due to ”poor” play in the regular season. Since 2010 he’s had: 6th overall (Connelly) a 27th (Namenstnikov) (canucks pick Jensen at 29th) a 19th (vasilevski) right before Laughton and Maatta and a 2nd (Drouin)(Canucks picked up Horvat and Shinkaruk). I’d sure hope he’s had better picks as he’s had better draft position each year, But realistically our picks don’t look that bad either, considering where we’ve picked. Canucks have their first off year in 5 years and suddenly Gillis is a brain dead bum. But when other teams hit stumbling blocks (Chicago back to back first round exits), TB finishing 2nd last in the NHL and somehow people don't bat an eye. The honest truth is it's becuase you don't actively watch/cheer for those other teams. Start cheering for another team and you'll start to realize that they are faced with the same challenges and have similar glarring holes in their rosters. But because you watch the canucks so closely you put everything under a microscope.
  19. You need to stop with this consistent talk. The league is evolving and so is the team, they type of team that won 5 years ago is not the same type of team that is successful today. Gm’s need to adapt to the league and as well to what assets they have on their current roster. 2011 canucks players were in their prime, we went all in and got within one game to winning the cup. (actually fared better than 94 as we had two cracks at closing the series off, too bad our 10 million dollar man didn’t show up in game 6). By 2012 it was clear the league was no opening game up in playoffs the way they do in the regular season (is that the league not remaining consistent?) So what does Gillis to gets this team bigger and stronger, enter in Kassian and Booth. Booth, who put up 16 goals in 56 games when first arriving here. By 2013 it was clear our window was pretty much closed and canucks needed to start building towards the next core, hopefully with a smooth transition by remaining competitive (if we didn’t have the injuries we’ve went through this year, we’d easily be in a playoff spot). Enter in the Horvat, Matthias, Markstrom, and young signing like Santo, Stanton, Fox, in the past we signed washed up old UFA’s. I’d say that was a smart move. Ask blockbuster and Blackberry how remaining consistent and not adapting to their environment went? You also talk about how all successful teams give young players a shot. Well look at our line up it’s not like we don’t have young players like Kassian Lack and Tanev in our line up giving the chance to grow. Overall, this team is not near as bad as what people like to make things out to be. The way you talk about this team you would assume that we are two steps away from fallling off a cliff, and boy are you ever wrong with that logic.
  20. What's with all the hate on the booth trade. 1st this guys has some terrible bad luck with injuries, he did put up 16 goals with up right before he went down with his first injury. Second, If his contract wasn't so high people would be in love with this guy as he works his tail off and crashes and bangs every night. 3rd, we will have to wait another 3-4 before years before we really find out if how good that trade was.
  21. I'm going to assume that your talking about that fact that FLA didn't score a goal. I'm also going to assume that you've never played the sport before and there for shouldn't be making comments about knowing nothing about hockey. Hockey is about momentum, when a goalie lets in 3 goals on 13 shots like Luongo did, not only is your team down buy three but you also have zero momentum to build off. If you've played the sport before you'd realize that it's much easier to score when your line mates our building energy each shift. It's much harder to score when the other teams have all the energy due to your goalie letting in weak goals. This is a luongo tweet thread therefor if you want to further dive into this topic lets bring talk about in another luongo thread, as this is not tweet information
  22. Yeah, the postponed game against CBJ (When peverley had that scare). They rescheduled the game for april 9th and they start in the second period down by a goal.
  23. Dallas has 1 and 2/3 game in hand. PHX lost tonight and play NYR and PITS in there next two. If canucks beat buffalo and PHX loses their next two by wednesday canucks will be 3 points out of the playoff spot with PHX having no games in hand and both teams having 9 games remaining. It's a lot closer than the projected stats would show. Every game counts, start off a role against the sabres. Big game, Go canucks go.
  24. I would suggest you take a read in this thread, LUCKY#4 summarized this year up nicely. http://forum.canucks.com/topic/358400-before-you-play-the-blame-game-kinda-long-read/
