  1. Lol committed to learning from this Yeah he's outta the league. Not a great look for him, but I wonder if he has a case to sue twitter or whatever platform these messages were leaked from...
  2. He's got nothing to do with Boeser. They play a different style. Toffoli is a 2way guy, gets in the corners, playoffs clutch guy. Jake deserves nowhere near 5 million, I have no idea how you made that jump. Even if you're looking at numbers alone, Virtanen (and Boeser) are still establishing themselves whereas Toffoli has paid his dues. Toffoli is on pace for 29 goals this year. 1st liners cost 9+ AAV in 2020, 2nd liners are more in the 6.5+ AAV... Why would you expect a guy who's hitting UFA in his prime to sign for a cheap home town deal when he's only played 10 games. Why wouldn't he then wait and get 1-2 mill extra per year. Even if the cap hit stays flat, there's going to be a bidding war for his services. I don't think he's coming in anywhere below 6.5 cap hit. Only way I see him signing for the cap hit you're suggesting is if the cap actually goes down.
  3. You have to be a bit more realistic with Toffoli's cap hit. He's a UFA in his prime, pretty damn good player, and he brings a winning resume with plenty of playoff experience to the table. I think his cap hit will be in the 6.75-7.5mill, and that's assuming the cap hit stays fixed for next year. Which would be fair, considering the TV deal will come through the following season.
  4. It's not that simple. There's a period (1 or 2 weeks, maybe longer) before July 1st where other GMs around the league are (unofficially I believe) allowed to start talking to players that are slated to hit FA. So he could potentially have other offers on the table that would drive his price tag up. I wouldn't wait until FA to put pen to paper as this plan has the potential to fall apart and introduce chaos. If the plan is to sign him, then sign him up asap - 4th round pick be damned, it's not worth the risk. I'm sure there will be pieces dealt this offseason that should get us some draft picks back.
  5. Happy belated birthday to the one and only EEEAAAAAAGLE
  6. Like Theo said they can talk to the player as well as his representation if they so choose, as long as there is no money changing hands. Otherwise he would not be allowed to go to camp on his own dime.
  7. Noooo what do you mean? I'm not sure how you could possibly infer that
  8. It just occurred to me that assuming every team gets 1 compliance buyout (which is likely imo), the Flames will buy out Lucic's contract and he wanted to come here before he signed in Edmonton. We could see him sign here for cheap ~1mill contract and he could play on the 4th line and finally provide that grit and intimidation we've been needing. A 4th line of Lucic - Beagle - Motte could wreak havoc on the opposition all year
  9. Yep that's what I saw too. I only watched the first 4 mins of the video and holy crap there are some mistakes there in the defensive zone where I have no idea what he's thinking. Not ready for the NHL in my opinion. He might be having a very off game defensively in this video, but even so the gaffs/brain farts that he has are inexplicable. Red flags imo. He's good offensively but you have to be able to play defense to play in the NHL. Just super casual, no urgency on defense and not positionally sound on lots of plays, questionable defensive awareness. Examples of what I'm talking about where I have no idea what he's thinking and he wouldn't get away with those in the NHL: 0:21 - what the hell is he doing?? Luckily the puck squirts out to him but then he misses his d partner with a cross ice pass by a mile. 0:47 - hit the ice quick - he has a gaping triangle where a slightly more skilled player can easily find the seam. He just casually tries to block the pass. 1:53 - he sees the forward in trouble on the wall between 2 players and he's continuing over the red line instead of retreating and mitigating risk. On the same play he can see his d partner changing and a dead giveaway at the opposition's blue line. He gets benched for this play in the NHL right away. 3:10 - so casually getting back to the front of the net. Then in the same shift at ~3:18 he just casually drifts off to the top of the zone and he leaves a guy all alone in the corner. Stuff like that should never happen. Even as a brain fart, that's a red flag for me. 3:45 - he's coming back on a 2 on 1 where he sees the forward (Lind I believe) and he skates into his hip as they come into the frame, instead of looking around and being aware and in good position to neutralize the next trailing threat. In my opinion he's another Pouliot. Again, it's not a big sample size, and brain farts happen but the brain farts I saw are red flags. Enough to tell me that he's not a mainstay in the lineup at the NHL level. I don't even know if he'd be a good depth player. He's almost 25 so if he can clean up his defensive play I'd happily eat crow, but I'm not holding my breath.
  10. Went back to the first thread and saw this: OP bias?
  11. Hmm interesting. So you'd lump opponents from the other division within the same conference with inter-conference opponents. I actually did go down that route, but to me it made more sense to play opponents in your conference more often than the ones in the other conference. Plus it would cut down on travel as well. That said, if it means shortening the season, I don't mind your idea at all.
  12. @Provost's thread about rolling the season back to 68 games for this year got me thinking about the number of games played in the NHL regular season. It's a topic that's been brought up before, where the players feel like they play too many games in the season - and I agree. 82 is too many games for a contact sport like hockey. Games would be a little more entertaining as well if they get more rest time. So the owners could benefit too, although they won't like cutting back on the number of games played. With the Seattle expansion in '21-22, that introduces a balanced eastern and western conference where the end result will be 16 teams in each conference with 8 teams in each division. Here is my proposal: Within the division: 4 games/season x 7 opponents = 28 games Other division in conference: 3 games/season x 8 inter-divisional opponents = 24 games Other conference: 2 games/season against 1 division in the other conference -> 2 x 8 = 16 games 1 game/season against the other division in the other conference -> 1 x 8 = 8 games Then you alternate from year to year on which division you play twice in 1 year from the other conference. For example, Canucks play Metropolitan division opponents twice in 1 year, and Atlantic division opponents once. Then vice versa the following year. Hopefully that makes sense. So in '21-22 NHL regular season we play 28 + 24 + 16 + 8 = 76 games. Not too many games lost so I don't think ownership will have any too much of a problem with it aside from not seeing every eastern opponent once a year, but it will allow the games to get slightly more spaced out therefore enhancing the product on the ice with more rest days. Thoughts? EDIT: I have not done any research on whether or not this framework has been proposed yet, so my apologies if I'm plagiarizing anyone
  13. He's more like a Duncan Keith than a Dan Hamhuis to be honest. Also has that fight/edge that Keith has. I'm not saying he'll be as good as Keith in the NHL, but his playing style is more comparable to a Keith/Krug than a Hamhuis to me. Also since this topic has been drummed up AGAIN regarding this kid, I personally have 0 doubts that he'll sign with the Canucks. He's on record saying he appreciates the Canucks being understanding of him choosing to stay close to his family/brother and he's a good kid, very loyal. I know that doesn't necessarily put you all at ease, but all I can say is I am not worried in the slightest. I would join @SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME in the hat eating and riot business.
  14. I love this kid. Go back in the thread, I've been saying it for years now this guy is a stud 2way Dman. Very reliable and can definitely jump up and take advantage offensively, but doesn't sacrifice the defensive part of the game. He knows how to defend. I only watched the first video because I've seen him play enough times but what gets highlighted is you can see that he knows how and when to be aggressive and close off a nothing play or contest a winger entering the zone. He doesn't do it if there are no backcheckers in the lanes to support him. He drives his player (not necessarily physically although he certainly likes to engage quite a bit) aggressively into the boards with conviction. Nip it in the bud so to speak. I love this kid...
  15. Well no, what I'm trying to say is there's more than one way to skin a cat. Sorry Alf if you're reading this. Just because they are not following your script for a rebuild doesn't make it less of a rebuild. Again, it seems like you just want to be in the armchair and do it your way, otherwise they are screwing up the rebuild. We are not all in for the playoffs, they didn't sell out everyone in the farm to try to get to the playoffs, they were dealing from a position of strength and decided to bring in ONE player that will help with the playoff push at the deadline because it is vital that this young core experiences what the playoffs are like. Gillis sold Schneider - a very capable starter at the time - for a 1st round pick. Does that mean he was rebuilding? But regarding the rest of the quote directly above, I think we've gone down this road enough where we're going to start going in circles at this point. No? Agree to disagree? Well no a 3rd pairing guy averages more than 15 mins a night whereas a 4th liner is around 8-10. Myers can probably capably play around 16-18 mins a night. Plus he's filling in as an ok top 4 for us, to help Tanev with depth on the right side. Key reason (along with Stecher stepping up his play this year) why Tanev has missed a TON of time with injuries this year imo. I don't wanna argue each one of your assessments regarding contracts/player roles there but let's just say that I disagree with maybe the exception of Beagle. Also Schaller was 1.9 not 2.5.
  16. Motte and MacEwen can both play C. Although Motte would not be ideal because he hasn't played C in a while and he's a pretty small guy to put up the middle. MacEwen would fill in that role pretty well. I'm hearing Jasek is also doing very well in the AHL as a shutdown guy and he's earned a shot. So they also have that option for 4C. Off season is another option. Don't get me wrong, I really like Beagle and I definitely agree that he's useful and good to have in the locker room. But if it comes between him and re-signing one of the Hughes/Pettersson to a long term deal, then I'll take the latter any day. Sutter's contract will not impact those guys. It's just for cap flexibility more than anything. I definitely agree with the bolded statement above regarding Lu's recapture penalty. If we can get rid of that then definitely go that route. I definitely don't agree with this statement though, especially the bolded part. Beagle is the worst skater on the team imo. Sutter has pretty good foot speed north/south and really that's the most important part in a checking center. The reason I brought up offense (with Sutter being slightly better) is just in case one of our top 6 centers goes down, then you can slide Sutter in 3C and he'd be ok. If you want to talk about moot points I'd say teams are most likely not getting 2 compliance buyouts
  17. Could not disagree more on all your points lol... just going to have to agree to disagree. Roussel is still a very useful player. Just because he's having a bit of an off year because of a late start doesn't mean he's useless for God's sake what is it with fans and memory loss. He's fine. He's on pace for a ~30 point season over 82 which is solid for a 3rd liner, and he provides lots of other intangibles. His contract is not even remotely close to being a bad contract. Don't just look at his last 20 games and say "he's completely useless"
  18. We don't have someone with Roussel's skillset that can agitate and pushback like Roussel can. Sutter and Beagle can more or less have a similar skillset which we needed a couple of years ago when we didn't have center depth but now is a bit redundant. He's more effective than Beagle and foot speed allows him to keep up with faster top 6 players. For argument's sake let's say they're equally effective, they can both play 4C very well, I don't think anybody can argue that. They're both really good in the dot (with Beagle having the edge there) and good PKers but the difference is Beagle has an extra year on his contract. And Sutter can still manage at 3C, while I think Beagle may struggle more there. I like all 3 players (Roussel, Beagle and Sutter) - they are all effective in their own way. But to me you have to cut ties with the player that would have the least disruptive impact on the team, and Beagle is the candidate that best fits that description imo.
  19. Completely agree on the principle - that could be the difference in retaining all our free agents or having someone walk. I disagree about the guy. Sutter has only 1 year left after this year. Beagle has 2. They both provide a similar skill set and we needed a couple of matchup centers prior to Gaudette's arrival. But now that AG is here and producing (although he's not a checking center), one of them is replaceable. Beagle is the candidate for me because he has another year left on his deal (Hughes, Petey contracts...) whereas Sutter has only 1 more year left so we'll have both of them off the books by end of next year in this scenario. We can choose to re-sign Sutter to a cheaper deal because we definitely need a good faceoff RHC that can matchup against top 6 lines.
  20. You guys realize Sutter does everything Beagle can do but can jump up to 3rd line matchup as well if necessary right? I love beagle but his contract isn't great let's face it. I'd rather they get rid of term rather than a 1 year contract.
