  1. A very sad but accurate statement. All the shoulda/woulda/couldas are getting real old real fast. Such a simple concept that many find difficult to grasp. People are more concerned with being right and saying "I told you so" on an online discussion board than giving the kids who will carry the team for the next decade or so a little leeway to grow. What's even worse is that most of them are adults well past their 40s - as far as I can tell anyways.
  2. Seriously though... How can we ever get out of this rebuild if our 20 year old prospects aren't even hall of famers yet?? Dealing with all the drama queens is the single most difficult thing about this rebuild.
  3. Good kid. Not worried about him in the slightest. He just turned 20 like 2 months ago... Even if he's not ready by training camp and he has to spend the whole year in Utica, it would be a great developmental year for him playing with all the kids that will form the core of the new Canucks for years to come. Said this before but I'll keep saying it, patience, children, patience...
  4. Do we expect Hughes to wear the C for Michigan this year?
  5. You can almost count on that. That said, I don't quite agree, I feel like there are a LOT of teams in the west that will be much better next year. CGY, SJS, STL, COL will continue to rise, I think we'll see Edmonton back in the playoffs... I don't expect us to be bottom 5, but bottom 10 is more than likely imo.
  6. I posted this in the Canucks Top Ten prospects thread, but I was elated when I really thought about all the prospects in our organization already., I thought more people could use positive thoughts on a Monday, so here:

    1. Pettersson

    2. Hughes

    3. Juolevi

    4. Demko

    5. Dahlen

    6. Gaudette

    7. Lind

    8. Dipietro

    9. Woo

    10. Gadjovich

It is a good feeling when you have to think hard to make a top 10 list for your prospects. So many dark horses that can steal the show... Lockwood, Brisebois, Jasek, Rathbone etc. not to mention Boeser, Virtanen, and Horvat who are already contributing on the team. If Pettersson can play C in the NHL and be as impactful as he is on RW, we're pretty much set for the rebuild:

    Dahlen - Pettersson - Boeser

    Gadjovich - Horvat - Lind

    Leipsic - Gaudette - Virtanen

    Palmu - MacEwen - Lockwood/Jasek

    Lockwood/Jasek

Hughes - Tryamkin (another question mark, hopefully he comes back after his KHL contract is done)

    Juolevi - Woo

    Rathbone - Gudbranson

    Brisebois/Stecher

    Demko

    Dipietro

Many prospects will not reach their potential, but we already have a full cupboard. If JB and company keep doing their thing at next year's draft, then we will really have an overflow of prospects, and we can start making trades for impactful young players like Panarin for example. I'm hoping for just 1 more year of tank, and a chance to draft J. Hughes. After that, I expect management will start to push hard to make the playoffs in the 2019-2020 season, which I believe is the last year for Benning's extension. I would anticipate if management stays the course, then how we do in 2019-2020 will be the deciding factor in whether or not JB gets another extension and enjoys the fruits of his labour, or they bring in another manager to take us to another level.

The only problem with that lineup is that only Gudbranson and Bo have seen even a game of the NHL playoffs. Would probably need to add some veterans in the bottom 6.

@Bure_Pavel Yes, that was a lineup strictly based on prospects and each of these guys will come into the league at different times so players will have different levels of experience. Also, like I said in my post, some of these guys could potentially get traded for young RFAs as early next year's draft (probably not until the summer though).

@Bure_Pavel but people whined when Benning brought in bottom 6 vets through UFA.

Lots of good centers in the upcoming draft.  Being able to utilize EP on both the wing and at center will make Green's job a lot easier.

  7. 1. Pettersson 2. Hughes 3. Juolevi 4. Demko 5. Dahlen 6. Gaudette 7. Lind 8. Dipietro 9. Woo 10. 8. I'm playing NHL 16 be a GM with the Colorado Avalanche, and my lineup got too good. Here it is:

    Landeskog - Duchene - Kucherov

    Saad - Mackinnon - Nylander

    Lemieux - Soderberg - Hansen

    Haberstich - Chipchura - Dorsett

    Klefbom - Pouliot

    Chychrun - Burns

    Meszaros - Barrie

    Bobrovsky

    Pickard

Haberstich is a young LW PWF, I always draft him in the third round because he usually develops into a good player (cheating I know). I need to make a trade but I don't know who to get rid of. My team is too young now so I'd probably want to trade a young'un for a vet. Mackinnon isn't progressing all that well, he's still scoring at a 2nd liner's pace. So maybe get rid of him for an upgrade to get a right handed 2C checker. We are the highest scoring team in the league, 2nd in GA, top 3 in PP%, top 5 in PK%. I've got Rantanen and another LW prospect, as well as 2 LDs knocking on the door for a taste in the big league. Pouliot is the leading Dman in scoring in the league, he's looking like Norris trophy candidate.

The core of the team is all between 20-27 years old. How would you move forward with this lineup?

      thejazz97

I know in NHL 17, you can trade Henrik Samuelsson for Zach Werenski, but that doesn't help you any.

Ever played “bubble hockey”?  We used to cut up hockey cards, and tape them over the plastic players to create our teams.  We cut up some good cards.  :picard:

@Alflives Alf, your posts always put a smile on my face  Sorry that you lost so many good cards, but you get a story out of it now.

@thejazz97 Appreciate the tip anyways. NHL '16 is the most current NHL I own. I don't buy them every year because of how stupid expensive they are. I'll probably wait to get NHL '20 when it comes out. I know I'm cheap, but I hate corporations and I'm not giving them my money unless I absolutely have to.

  9. @Alflives jesus christ Alf, take a break
  10. Agreed. Giving him the C this year shows that we are fully committed to the youth movement, and the young guys coming in have someone to lead the way for them. It's an acknowledgement from the club that we are moving on from the Sedin's era. It's not too soon. The leadership group is Sutter, Edler, Gudbranson and Tanev imo, so really any of these 2 would work but I would not want to give it to Edler and Tanev because they're both quiet in the locker room based on reports. It's fine to have them leading by example, but you also need leaders to hold the team and themselves accountable behind closed doors. Although Edler answering media questions after every game could go wrong...
  11. Yeah that's fair. I was torn between Sutter and Gudbranson but I like Guddy as a leader on the backend a little more than Sutter. Either way, they would both look good wearing the A.
  12. I'd give Bo the captaincy for next year. Gudbranson and Edler would wear the A for me. I don't like the rotating A, it just feels like teams do it just so that they don't hurt someone's feelings.
  13. Agreed. Anyways, about BB, anyone know if he started working out yet?
  14. Wrong on both accounts. Brock is not a pure shooter, he can actually make plays and pass very well. He happens to have an excellent shot and he utilizes it. Maybe you "know" that 21 year old Virtanen is not a pure shooter, but we do not all know that. What we do know is that he has a hard, deceptive shot with a quick release, albeit inaccurate. If he works on his accuracy I can definitely see him getting 20-25 goals a season, and 10-15 assists. That's only my projection, just like your projecting that he's not a shooter. EDIT: I just read your other comment and I don't think you know what "pure shooter" means. It means a player looks to release a shot before looking to pass. Just think, opposite of Henrik Sedin. Jake may not be a sniper yet, but he's definitely a shoot first player - like Ovie. And no, I'm not saying Ovie and Jake are remotely on the same level.
  15. 25 goals does not mean 60 points. 25 goals means 25 goals. He could have like 5 assists all year... Shawn Matthias a few years ago I think had like 22 goals and 7 assists. Pure shooters often have more goals than assists. EDIT: I am not saying that Shawn Matthias is a pure shooter. Also, just looked up his stats, he had 18G and 7A.
  16. There are 5 teams left that are real cup contender imo: Pittsburgh, Tampa, Boston, Nashville and Winnipeg. Who do you think has the best shot to take home the hardware?

I think people have really not given Vegas enough credit for the unreal inaugural season and for giving the Kings a quick boot from the playoffs. I wouldn't count them out yet.

I don't necessarily believe they will win it all but they've been surprising people all year.

@goalie13 Not necessarily. Obviously they are all good teams, but imo the other teams are on another level. Although VGK did look mighty good in game 1.

@Heretic That's actually a very good point you bring up. I did not quite think of it, but I can see that happening for sure. It's going to be a draining series for both teams... It'll be interesting to see how the team that moves on handles the next opponent. It's not just the physical stuff, the emotional toll of that series will be tough to get over.

  17. I see your point and I did mention in my second comment right after my initial comment that maybe Gaudette should not start on the 2nd line. Wouldn't be a bad idea to switch him and Sutter in the lineup. Theres still a lot of room for the youngsters to grow but that's too many open spots on the team. If they don't bring in outside help I believe that's putting too much pressure on the youngsters. People forget that even Bo is incredibly young. I'd like to see a couple of vets on the top line to start the year and hopefully the young guys can play their way up and push the vets down the lineup a little bit. Otherwise we're looking at and Edmonton situation. Doesn't matter if Boeser is on the "third line", I care more about the situations he's put in and the role he's playing. I'm ok with Boeser helping out Pettersson with the secondary scoring until they force their way up the lineup.
  18. Another note worth mentioning, Gaudette probably shouldn't be playing 2C next year. Forgot to include that... lines would need to get reswizzled I guess to account for that.
  19. Leipsic - Horvat - Eriksson (Scoring/good 2way play with matchups) Baertschi - Gaudette - Virtanen (shutdown) Dahlen - Pettersson - Boeser(Secondary scoring) Gaunce - Sutter - Motte (good shut down line) Dowd/Goldobin Some work to be done... I think it is vital to play Pettersson with our best finisher in Boeser - TG can try to give them the easy matchups to keep their confidence up and then give them more responsibility as they get more comfortable with each other and the league. On paper, they would provide more than enough secondary scoring. You hope the first line scores enough. Maybe a little too many youngsters in the lineup, I would say JB will try to pick up a vet to play with Pettersson and Boeser instead of Dahlen, which also allows Dahlen to develop in Utica for a year. All in all, we have some clutter up front which means we have trade chips to work with at the draft, and to improve the lineup The lineup projection tells me that we do not have a legitimate 1st line for next year, but the forward group does look like they can compliment each other rather well. Everyone will need to pull on the rope, but I have confidence in Travis Green and co. What I would like to see is: Vet* - Horvat - Vet* Leipsic - Gaudette - Virtanen Eriksson - Pettersson - Boeser Gaunce - Sutter - Motte Archibald/Goldobin (unless Goldy takes significant steps this summer in his overall play, although I do not see that happening because for him, he needs experience in games to improve). Trade chips: Granlund, Baertschi, Gagner, Boucher, Dowd, Hutton on the backend... I'd be looking to get us some solid vet presence for our 1st line using a package including some of these palyers. Even if it is someone who is 30+ years old - we are just looking for a placeholder for 2-3 years so our top end young guys get some time/space to develop. We'll probably have to include some of our high profile/better prospects (Brisebois, Palmu, Goldobin) in a package to get another 1st line presence. * ROR in Buffalo is one player who is not performing up to his contract and is unhappy, so he could be had for a reasonable price. Baertschi + Hutton/Brisebois? If we want to add, I'd say Buffalo would have to retain some of his cap. Vets which could be had without losing any current assets in the organization include Vanek, JVR, Neal and Kovalchuk. All good options for the 1st line. My preference would be Neal and Kovalchuk. However, I'm not sure how big of a contract Neal would be looking for and if it is something the Canucks would consider doing. Before anybody says it, big fat no to Kane IMO. Sorry, long read... Just thinking out loud and transcribing
  20. Ok great, you keep staring at a stat line to evaluate the future of a 21 year old, and I'll just keep trying to watch the games to see how he's doing on the ice. I would gladly take Raffi Torres on my team, especially in the playoffs over an Andrew Cogliano. Points only get you so far, and if that's how you measure a player's success then you and I just have very different philosophies about hockey. Yes I actually read what he said, but I didn't quite fall for the cop-out at the end. You guys accuse us of being like millennials because apparently we are "sensitive" about everything, but then you make your statements and hide behind the fine print in your claims. So you're going to regurgitate a bunch of numbers in my face, tell me Virtanen isn't projecting to put up points like the rest of them and then expect me to NOT to comment on your assertion? But hey since you're looking to debunk the power forwards are late bloomers theory: Patrick Maroon, Dustin Penner, Josh Bailey, oh and the most painful one of all, Cam Neely.
  21. Yeah we get it, trust me we have all heard your concerns. Some of us are just getting tired of them that's all. I guess I should blame myself. I get tired of your collective stats vomit so I stay away for a while but then I come back thinking maybe some of you have taken a sabbatical and then I run into the same BS everytime... And the cycle continues. But you should take some blame too. Virtanen was never going to be the type of player to create plays out of nothing and put up a ton of points on his own. Even if you watched him in junior, he was never that player. So not only did you set yourself up for disappointment, but you're also putting unfounded expectations on the kid.
  22. I guess the bigger concern for me is that a Canucks fan needs stats to prove to them that we have to be patient with our young players. Also, don't play innocent when someone calls you out. Yes very few people explicitly call Virtanen a bust, but there are many of you on here who are implying it. Case in point, here's a quote from a poster, why only an hour ago: To me, that is a post of someone who is all but saying Virtanen is a bust. And of course just like the rest of you, he throws in an offhand disclaimer at the end, just in case. Personally, I'm not prepared to look at a stat line and determine the future of a 21 year old player just yet. Though what I am struggling to figure out is, why? Do you just want to be able to say "I told you so" if Virtanen never amounts to anything more than a 4th liner? Would it really bring you that much joy? We are all very well aware that any player, even Boeser, can bust but that doesn't mean we jump on the "I-can-tell-the-future-but-also-have-the-wherewithal-to-backtrack-in-case-I-need-to" bandwagon. The venomous media are doing fine on their own sh**ting all over the team, I guess I just had hopes that fans would stand up for our players as opposed to joining the media circus. But listen - and this goes to all the rest of you @The 5th Line @Jägermeister @Toews and any others as well - if it's important to you, you can quote me, you can call me an idiot, say "I told you so", or whatever you want at any point now or in the future, for supporting Jake Virtanen. I think he's a valuable asset on this team, and he brings a skillset that the Canucks, and many other teams around the league are dearly missing.
  23. He's arguing patience for our 21 year old players. You, and a few others seem to have missed that point.
