I'd keep Sbisa and not re-sign Hamhuis. At least Sbisa can play the right side. A backend like this looks promising: Edler - Tanev Hutton - Sbisa Tryamkin - Larsen Pedan - Biega Gives us a physical deterrent on potentially every pairing (depending on how Edler wants to play) and some offensive instincts and mobility (once again depending on how Edler wants to play). EDIT: There's no room for Hamhuis anywhere in there.

Virtanen has to be over 220lbs right now. He's gotta be closer to 230.
-
Any word on his nagging shoulder injury?
-
It's ok, the world hasn't ended I'm still discussing a Dman on the Canucks
-
No I was talking about Sbisa
-
How big do you think he is? He's not even 200lbs
-
I agree, wholeheartedly.
-
I seriously have no idea what you're watching. I don't know why you're being a complete dick about this we just have different opinions on this and we can do this all day but I have a midterm to study for. He's one of the worst skaters on our backend because he's slow. Hutton, Bartkwoski, Tanev, Edler, Biega and even Weber are better skaters on this team, imo.
-
If you think he's fast you need to get your eyes checked
-
Wow I strongly disagree with that statement. Hutton and Bartkowski are good skaters, Tanev is a slightly above average skater. Sbisa is slow, cannot skate with the puck out of corners. He sometimes looks awkward carrying the puck through the neutral zone even as he's doing something as basic as changing direction to avoid a forward standing still. My definition of a good skater is someone who has a good first step, good balance and looks comfortable carrying the puck with good speed, and agility. Sbisa maybe has decent balance but lacks in all other areas. I don't understand what you mean by the top part of your comment. Elaborate?
-
But let me give you my evaluation: Edler is a #3 with the potential to satisfactorily support a really good #1 Dman, Hutton is a #4 right now with very good potential (I'm very excited about him). So I don't think our evaluation is too far off for those 2. Hamhuis is a rapidly declining #4 who is somewhat good defensively although he has been very suspect for much of the year. Tanev is barely a top 4 Dman and that's only because he is reliable defensively with a decent outlet pass although I believe he's taken a step (or 2) back in that department. He has very little to no offensive upside, no physicality or aggression whatsoever, and no ability to clear the crease. Sbisa is definitely no more than a #5 Dman who's capable of providing some physicality but no ability to clear the crease or chip in offensively. We are pretty much in agreement on the rest. Note that we have only 1 Dman with limited offensive upside and that's Edler, imo.

Well you said we have a solid #2 in Edler (which I think is generous but I can see where you're coming from), 2 good cerebral #3s in Tanev and Hamhuis, 2 #4s in Hutton and Sbisa and then some #6,7,8 guys. That's a #2, 2x#3s, and 2x#4s. Sounds like a decent D-corps to me because that's what most of the league has. Not many teams have a #1 Dman. I just think you were a little bit generous evaluating some of the guys. You also said Sbisa was quick which really surprised me.
-
Wow according to that evaluation it sounds like it should be all sunshine and rainbows if that's actually what our D-corps looks like. In reality however defense has been this teams achilles' heel for 2 seasons. What gives?

I'm loving his persistence and character playing through (serious) injury, but I am kind of concerned about that. Hopefully he doesn't make it worse. When his season is done he HAS to rehab it. He shouldn't come to NA to help Utica or the Canucks, he should come to NA to meet with Canucks doctors and assess the damage. Getting treatment here would be huge. He'd get exposure to the culture and learn while not having the pressure of performing on the ice. Could be a blessing in disguise.

Community Choice Poll - Enter Key Behaviour

As Baer pointed out, if you hold shift as you press enter it line breaks. It's proper formatting to double space when you press enter, otherwise. -
How's his skating? Also, is he eligible to play for Utica next year?
-
Would be a great idea to bring him over and play him in Utica to finish off the year. He would get his feet wet on NA ice and get more familiar with the tendencies of the team and the system. It would also be great for him to have Pedan help him out while he's getting settled, easier than having nobody to talk to in the Canucks. To those saying he projects as a #5/6 Dman, you're wrong. There's high hopes for this guy. His skating is great especially for a big guy so he's fairly mobile, he has a mean streak and a canon of a shot. From the highlights it looks like he reads the play fairly well so while his hockey IQ isn't elite, it's definitely there. The biggest knock on him is his positioning and some gaffs sometimes in the defensive end, but he will find it easier on the smaller ice where there's less space to get lost in. I have high hopes for him to be more than a bottom pairing guy, hope he doesn't disappoint but we should be patient with him and give him at least 2-3 years before we can start truly evaluating what we have in him.
-
But then who would come out? Lord knows we can't survive without Higgins in the lineup
-
@Chronic.Canucks.Fan I'd be pleasantly surprised if that happens. But realistically we'd be over-reaching if we expect him to be anything more than a leader on the 3rd line. The number of guys in Utica I'd love to see on the big team is ridiculous. Shinkaruk, Gaunce, Kenins, Grenier, Pedan, Zalewski and Jensen (he needs to get one last shot with the big club before we give up on him). EDIT: Quoted the wrong person
-
I'd laugh my ass off if McCann also ends up getting loaned to WJC after you so clearly laid down the law with the matter-of-fact statement you made.
-
Like Deniro said, replacing Higgins with Gaunce would be most welcome. Higgins looks like a defenseman playing forward. No offensive skill whatsoever. That's not what should be expected from vet forwards, they have to have some offensive abilities.
-
I was hoping for a little better offensive output from him this year. 10 pts in 34 games is satisfactory but not great (especially considering 5 of those points came in the last 4 games). I'd still welcome him and Pedan on the roster with open arms
-
This guy is looking like a stud 6'4" goalie. Pretty psyched about having him on the Canucks. Ooooop better not let Deniro hear me
-
Can anyone following through on this guy tell me how his development is going? Is he improving, are there any glaring holes in his game? What has he improved the most on this year? What has he not improved on?
