  1. I agree with assessment on OJ's solid defensive game and I do agree that Rathbone needs work on his defensive game but are you really blaming Rathbone for that goal? Gaudreau beat Schenn wide with his quick feet and shot the puck, which went around the boards and Rathbone was the closest player to it so he just tried to get to the puck. If it's anyone's fault, it should be Podkolzin. Although he back checked, he was just circling around not knowing where to go in a no man's land. So Lindholm was able to get the puck unimpeded and make the pass to Gaudreau. If Podkolzin covered his man or at least blocked the shooting/passing lane, Schenn would have been able to cover Gaudreau but because Podkolzin didn't, Schenn had to defend the front of the net. Lindholm saw wide open Gaudreau, made the pass and Rathbone was late because well, puck travels faster than anyone can possibly skate. It was 1-on-3 (1 Flame vs 3 Canucks) but with poor positioning by Podkolzin, it quickly turned into 2-on-1. I don't think Rathbone should be blamed for that goal, well not majority of the blame anyways.
  2. The first goal, he was way out of position chasing the puck, leading to the trailer to receive the puck and make perfect pass to Gaudreau for the goal. I'm not going to say he's terrible because he wasn't. But he really did nothing of significance last night playing alongside Miler and Garland. If we go based on his game last night, and remove the fact that he is highly touted prospect, he doesn't make the team. I don't think he is ready for the scoring role is all I'm going to say. Like you, I'm really rooting for the kid and hope that he can find a role with the team right away like Hoglander last season. Maybe his game is better suited on the 3rd or 4th line.
  3. Not disagreeing regarding Rathbone's defensive game. My comment was regarding Rathbone's offensive game. He showed what he can do with the puck. I didn't comment on the defensive side of the game in my post -- I think he needs to work on his game and hence to the AHL is what I said. And agree on OJ. He did his job on the PK. He wasn't perfect but he was solid. Just the fact that he can kill penalties and Rathbone can't, is enough reason for him to make the team IMO.
  4. Three players that I was interested in were Podkolzin, Juolevi, and Rathbone. I think Podkolzin may not be suitable for a top 6 role just yet. But I think he will be a good bottom 6 player to start with. But for that to happen, he needs to improve on his positional plays. Knowing where to be, when to go and when to back off. He was very timid in the two games that I saw him play. And he wasn't using his body as much for some reason to create turnovers and forecheck, which is what he was advertised for. I'm guessing that he is still adapting to the North American game. I thought Juolevi did a solid job in the PK. He wasn't perfect but he was solid. There were couple times where Tkachuk was left wide open in front of the net and OJ didn't bother to go and check his stick or take the body.. but aside from that he was fine on the PK and also on 5-on-5. But man, I think Rathbone has surpassed OJ. Rathbone is sort of like what we hoped OJ would turn into. Lots of confidence in skill in the ozone and good skating. I would still prefer to send Rathbone to the AHL so that he can develop his game more. I think we need someone to kill penalties and OJ could fill that role to start the season.
  5. I hope you mean Quinn and not Gillis. I respect Gillis for building a great team but I also think he needs to take a lion's share of the blame for the years that followed.
  6. IMO, if you are a super star in the league and going into the UFA, you don't need an agent because you already know comparable players and the dollar they get and you know you want to get 8 year deal for security. So why not save yourself agent fees and represent yourself? That's what Doughty did and I think also OV. Maybe there are more examples of this. But when you are a young RFA, you need an agent. First, you don't have a sense on the impact of the length of the deal and what is the right $$$. The team can always make a case on why player X is not a good comparable and why player Y who gets less is a better comparable and so on.
  7. What is a players' GM? The one that hands out NMCs and high dollar long term contract like candy? The one that gets so attached to a player that he can't trade nobody? If so, I'm glad to hear that he isn't a players' GM. We need none of those players' GM if we want to win the cup.
  8. No. JP probably promised a lot to EP when he recruited him. Now it looks like he can't deliver so he is dragging this out. But I would love to see the kids step in and say enough is enough and that they want to play hockey with their teammates as soon as possible and take control of the situation. If not, I will be disappointed in them for not having the balls to take matters into their own hands.
  9. Only if Eichel were healthy. Pettersson's value >= Eichel's value because Eichel wants out. Pettersson's value >>> Eichel's value because Eichel wants out and is unfit to play. Hughes and Dahlin is more or less a wash. Dahlin may be more of a complete player but Hughes is one of a kind player. Who knows if and when Eichel is going to play and again, it begs the question. If we are getting a 10 mil player in Eichel who is unhealthy, why don't we just give EP 10 mil x 8 years or whatever it is that he wants on a long term deal already?
  10. Essentially Severson and 3 firsts. No way Devils do this but I'd be all over this trade if it's offered.
  11. I want him back. F*ck Schmidt. Why did we get him?
  12. The goal is to not overpay anyone whether it's the top of the lineup or the bottom. Overpay EP and QH and we will have the depth problem and window closed almost immediately. See Chicago after Toewes and Kane got paid but at least they have 3 cups to show for. Now is when the cap actually matters and that's why everyone is focussed on getting EP and QH signed on reasonable deals. We will have to let go of at least one of Miller, Boeser, or Bo if EP and QH's contracts are not reasonable.
  13. That's why they recruited Petey. I hope you are right though that they will sign soon.
  14. Love and respect your positivity. But Hughes isn't even signed yet. No time to panic but we better address a missing RHD via trade if Hamonic is indeed not playing.
  15. Yes, for sure. But I'm just doing my job as a fan?
  16. Yes. Not because OJ is better but because Rathbone is waiver exempt and that he can benefit from playing more minutes in the AHL.
  17. Would love to re-acquire him given what's happening with Hamonic... Wonder what the price tag would be. Won't be cheap I guess considering that it's the Flames.
  18. Hopefully Woo is ready to push for top 6 role to platoon with Schenn? OEL-Myers Hughes-Poolman Juolevi-Schenn/Woo Ugh. This sucks.
  19. He deserves it. Well, he successfully pulled off cap circumvention by 20 million dollars giving the Bolts back-to-back cups.
  20. Fortunately, our incapable and stupid GM signed Poolman and Schenn. Which means we at least have 3 RDs to start the season. Assuming Hughes re-signs, OEL-Poolman QH-Schenn OJ-Myers Rathbone-Woo (they will start in the AHL but will be called up during the season)
  21. 9.5 in Tampa is probably 11-11.5 in Vancouver. Tampa is a terrible example to compare against when it comes to cap management. They have an advantage over many other states/provinces.
  22. Sure, 3 years is fine too. The cap hits going to be even lower so that's not bad. But if we win a cup where EP plays a prominent role (which he must otherwise we don't win a cup) or EP wins a Selke or Hart or scores 100+ points in those 3 years, that's going to be a 10+ mil extension and possibly closing our window unless the management makes savvy moves. I'd prefer 5 year 8.5 mil for EP, maybe 3 year for QH at around 6.5 mil. At the end of QH's contract, re-assess and if QH is not the player to help us win the cup, trade him to NJD or whichever team has the players that can help us win and do a quick re-tool.
  23. Agree on EP. He is already a complete player, drives the play the right way and can deposit the puck in the net (or destroy posts) with efficiency. But I don't know if I agree on QH. He projects to be 70-80 point scoring defenceman. That unique way to generate offence is going to give us an edge. I really think of QH like Patrick Kane. That ability to carry the puck over the blue line, get the forwards crashing the net to create some space and we will get a scoring chance. Obviously, QH doesn't have a shot like Kane but imagine if he did develop an effective shot... QH is the type of player that can give you that slight edge to win playoff games, IMO. I think he is multiple tiers above Barrie too. We are looking at Karlsson-esque level of talent although the two have very different styles. Karlsson wasn't a defensive stalwart, he needed a stable partner and Hughes will be similar. But these guys can drive puck possession so that them being on the ice already limits the scoring chances. The odd counter attacks and turnovers will happen and that's why we need solid goaltending + stable partner for Hughes. We just need a system and player personnel that can help to maximize puck possession and implement defensive structure that lets Hughes focus on what he's good at.
  24. At this point, even 5 years would be fine if it's around 8 mil. The league is changing so fast that, if the core you have isn't going to get it done, then you gotta do a quick retool and 5 years is more than enough time to assess the core's ability to get it done. I remember watching Monahan and Gaudreau in 2015 playoffs thinking that these two dynamic duos along with Flames' defence will be a force to be reckoned with. Turned out, those two can't get it done in the playoffs and now Flames are in a retool mode. EP and QH have impressed in their first playoff appearances but do we have Toewes (a complete player) and Kane (on defence) or Monahan and Gaudreau (on defence)? I think EP and QH are capable of delivering and that we have a complete player in EP and Hughes' ability to carry the puck and generate offence is similar to how Kane generates offence. We got 3 players to re-up: Boeser in one year, Miller and Horvat in two years. Keeping QH and EP at or below 8 mil helps us set the upper limit for these 3 guys and maybe just enough space to re-sign them. Of course, Miller may become a trade bait to strengthen the defence or other parts of the line up. We've got depth up front, we got the goalies, all we need is to assess what we got on defence, improve it if necessary, and we are ready to contend for the next 5 years.
  25. I think it's too soon to waive and risk losing him. He may never live up to his expectations but he could still prove to be a serviceable bottom pairing defender killing penalties. If he can't even do that, that's when we let him go. Start the season with OJ as #3LD to kill penalties. Let's see what he can do. Rathbone can start in the AHL and play 20+ minutes including PP, maybe even PK. Let's develop him as a complete defenceman. Rathbone's got a really good lower body strength and got a low center of gravity, I think he will be more than just an offensive dman. But he probably needs time to develop different aspects of his game.
