[Signing] Canucks re-sign Conor Garland
khay replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Yeah, 2 non-roster players + injured 4C that may not come back for a top 3D and top 6F. The trade was a huge win. If OEL recovers to being a #1D, we may have a team that can contend for the cup. -

Little higher than I expected, was thinking 4-4.25 mil, 4.5 mil tops. But I like the player and paying a little extra to keep the player happy is all good. -
[Report] Canucks G Holtby To Be Bought Out
khay replied to babalu's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Buyout cost for this year is only 500k. Next season it's 1.9M but that's next year's problem. See https://www.capfriendly.com/teams/canucks. I would have also liked to have kept Holtby but we need to clear up cap to sign our RFAs and add to the defence. If Schmidt is indeed to be traded, we also need to target an RHD via free agency so need to create more cap space. With the addition of OEL, I am tempted to bring Edler back on a 2-3 mil contract. I have a memory of watching Edler-OEL as a pairing for team Sweden and they played great together (maybe it was Sochi or one of the World Championships). Long time ago but they might still have the chemistry. Edler-OEL Hughes-RHD (Savard or bring back Hamonic) Rathbone-Myers Juolevi Trade Schmidt for help up front. -
[Rumor] Nate Schmidt being dealt very soon any minute now
khay replied to Bertuzzipunch's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Yeah if the agent is involved, they are having a hard time finding a deal. But if we can’t trade him, just keep him. He’s a good player. -
Morons are usually the loudest because they are ignorant and don't have the awareness to recognize that they could be wrong. Unfortunately, in Vancouver, we have a lot of loud morons in the media. The morons have all unified under the biased framework that OEL is a declining #6 Dman, paid like a top 2D. Sad and pathetic.

[Rumor] Nate Schmidt being dealt very soon any minute now
khay replied to Bertuzzipunch's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
The cap needed to be cleared so that we can upgrade our roster. If we don't clear that cap, we can't upgrade our roster. Those 3 players that we "lost" are marginally above AHL level replacements players (well maybe except Beagle who handled PK and defensive tasks). With this trade, we cleared 12 mil of dead cap (non roster players), and used that money to get 2 roster players + enough wiggle room to handle Petey signing. -
I agree, except McDavid's 130-150 points might get them there along with Draisaitl's 100+ points in the weak Pacific division. Of course, Smith may falter then they are screwed. They lost Larsson and did not replace him. Keith is over the hill. Is Klefbom coming back? A lot of question marks on that team, they might as well miss the playoffs.

This is what I don't get. They want Risto but complain that we got OEL even when OEL is better than Risto. OEL is a suspect in his own end? What about Risto? Risto is big that's all that he's got on OEL. And look at what it cost to get him. If OEL didn't have a two team trade list, we don't get OEL at this cost. He's still a good player although no longer at the level he used to be. Also, OEL at slightly north of 7 mil is not too bad of a cap hit. He is still a smooth skating dman who transitions the puck very well and could suit the style that we play. He will have plenty of forwards that know what to do with the puck, unlike in Arizona. People complain that we should have just put up with one stinker of a season and let those bad contracts expire. I don't think that would sit well with the players. The players hate losing and to come back with the same team and finish in the bottom 5 would equate to losing morale and players feeling lost. This is not an NHL game where you can sim the whole season. The players digest the 82 game schedule with the goal of making the playoffs, it is extremely demoralizing to lose and feel inferior to other teams/players. The frustration level in the locker room after this season is higher among the players as evident from Horvat's comments. Last season saw us go on an upswing, winning two series, only to be let down this season. If no significant moves are made and the same type of season followed in 2021-22 season, the team may never recover and this core may be in jeopardy. Also, keep in mind the division that we are in. The three Cali teams are rebuilding, Calgary is in a disarray, Seattle doesn't look like they'll be as good as Vegas was, and Arizona is, well, Arizona. That leaves Vegas and Edmonton as the only teams that are likely to make the playoffs, which leaves the door open for Vancouver. We should capitalize on this opportunity.

Eriksson was signed to rejuvenate the sedins. It was an odd move but yes people were hopeful that loui could help milk out production from the sedins for one more run at the playoffs. this move is made to complement the young core group that we have. It’s more like getting JT Miller than getting Eriksson. I’m cautiously optimistic. I think OEL will shine in Travis’ system.

Entirely new third line + top pairing D with some shrewd moves. IN: Garland, OEL, Pod, Dickinson OUT: Eriksson, Beagle, Roussel, Edler OEL still has a positive value, if not for his limited trade list. Garland, Dickinson, and Pod complement the roster: speed, skill, feisty, forechecking, and hard to play against. 9OA would have been an impact player down the road but this trade + Dickinson opens the window to compete for this team right off the bat.

Yeah, I think this is a good deal for us. And good on JB for waiting a year to get a better deal. OEL's contract is a risk factor but the potential reward is high -- OEL on a young Canucks team playing Green's style, could regain his form as a #1D. OEL should improve our transition game immensely, we will have another player besides QH to help our offence from the backend. Down a goal, we can send out QH, OEL, or both. We also get a QB for our 2nd PP. All of a sudden we got lots of guys that can move the puck: QH, Rathbone, OJ OEL, Schmidt, Myers I think they will give a try with OEL on the right side. If he sticks there, this deal is even better. The last year or two of OEL contract may suck -- essentially, we are delaying the pain that was sure to come next season due to bad contracts to the future. Not a bad tradeoff since our young guys are ready to compete and a lot can happen in 5 years, including the cap going up. If cap goes up to 90+ mil in 2025, OEL's 7+ mil contract is palatable even if he is a bottom pairing dman at that point in time. We could also dump his cap -- there may be favorable deals available later as opposed to now where almost all teams are cap crunched due to COVID.

Bo Horvat and his future [agent on don and dahli]
khay replied to Bertuzzipunch's topic in Canucks Talk
Thanks for this. Haven't listened to the interview and won't bother. -
[Signing] Stars re-sign Miro Heiskanen
khay replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Hmm, I didn't watch Dahlin enough to comment something smart but each time I did, he reminded me of Hedman when Hedman was younger. But yeah, MH plays calm and sound defence and may be the next Lidstrom. -

Good deal for the Stars. I'd take that deal all day. But yeah, one can dream. Petey is going to sign a bridge deal, then bank on himself becoming a 10+ mil player. QH on the other hand, we might be able to get him signed at around 7 or 8 mil for 8 years? Maybe? -
[Report] Alexander Edler to hit free agency

Dang, I was hoping he'd get to 100 goals in Canucks uniform. -
[Rumour] Vladimir Tarasenko left exposed
khay replied to Makaramel MacKhiato's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Wow! Seattle now has a chance to start their team with two star players in Tarasenko and Price. Holy $hit. -
[Report] Carey Price waives NMC for expansion draft
khay replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Agree 100%. Vegas got off to a great start by picking a HOF goalie. Seattle now has the chance to do the same. If I'm Seattle, I pick Price to make statement to the fans that we are going to compete for the playoffs and the cup right off the bat, i.e., do what Vegas did. IMO, this is a big mistake on Montreal's part. -
[Rumour] Habs Danault to test free agency

He played the shutdown role. But yeah, 5 mil is a bit too much. -

Love the player but not at that contract. If it can come down to 4.5 mil for 4 years, I'd sign him.
