Happy that they kept Clark. Happy that there were some changes and not status quo. Looking forward to the new season. -
James Norris Memorial Trophy finalists unveiled
khay replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in General Hockey Discussion
Well said. The way things are going, they might as well create an Art Ross (Bobby Orr) trophy for defencemen, separate from Norris. And Norris goes to the best defenceman regardless of the points. Sure, Art Ross winner often ends up winning the Hart too but at least having the separation makes it possible to recognize guys like Giordano for their play. I honestly don't think Fox and Makar should be in the same conversation as Hedman or some of the other #1D in the league. Not yet anyways. -
I'm somewhat surprised to know that his perceived value has dropped that low amongst the fans. I'd be happy with him at 3 mil or under. Don't think we can find a guy at or below 3 mil that can do the job better than Edler. Sure, but let's add a veteran to share the duties. If the kids aren't having a good game, Edler or whoever else we can find at 3 mil range can play 16-18 minutes, mostly hard minutes including PK blocking shots and so on. Edler did take a step back but at 35, 36 Edler, he should still be able to log 16-18 minutes a game. The reduced workload will be good for him as well. I just don't like the idea of going into the season with so much uncertainty especially on the defensive end of the puck.
-
I hope so, although I might be delusional 3-4 mil may be possible. His family is here and may not want to uproot his family. And he's gotta get that 100th goal. If his ask is 5 mil or higher, we simply cannot afford him as there are other holes that need to be filled.
-
Not only Pavel's numbers but Gretzky would have put up more points, maybe he will have scored more points each season and play a season or two longer to hit 3000 points before retiring.
-
He took a step back. I'll give you that. If it's not Edler, we still need someone else to eat up minutes. There aren't many quality dman that can eat minutes up at 3 mil or lower. Throwing QH, Rathbone, OJ (or Woo) to eat those minutes up would be a surefire way towards maximizing our odds in the lottery. Not a bad plan if the goal is to tank.
-
Next season's CDC tank commander general position has just been filled by Bertuzzipunch.
-
Care to offer an alternative? Don't give me QH + Rathbone + Juolevi eating up Edler's PK and defensive minutes.

Your post is pretty delusional. There are other options in the UFA market that are cheaper and can serve the role of 3C. Taking a flyer on RNH is fine and if he wants to come for 5.5 great. But unless you are RNH's family or friend, how do you know if RNH will take a discount? Him taking discount at 5.5 or even 6 sounds like a pipe dream on your part. I did my homework regarding the cap. But you threw out a number (10.5) without showing your work. Ever learn in math class that you need to show your work? Btw, I think we have more than 10.5 even after signing EP and QH. And here's my work, care to show yours? We have 14 mil now + 7 mil if Beagle and Ferland on LTIR and about 6 if Holtby and Virtanen are bought out. About 27 mil, 12-13 mil will go to EP + QH. About 13-14 mil to sign a 3C, 4C, RHD, back up goalie and maybe a depth defence signing. I don't think it's 3C or RD, I think we can get both. But we can't upgrade both if we sign RNH at 6 or higher unless we fill the rest of the roster with fringe NHL players. So, I'd rather go for a UFA 3C at 4-4.5 at 4 years or less plus get an RD to partner with Hughes at around 5 mil. Ristolainen for 2nd + minor prospect? Really? Just because Buffalo sucks, doesn't mean they are going to sell everyone of value at a discount. Stop dreaming. Stop making up reasons as to why teams will trade valuable assets at discounts or why a UFA would take 1-2 million dollars less just because it's hometown. Well, I guess it doesn't hurt to check. Let's check if MacKinnon can be had for our 2021 1st too while we are checking.

A real quick no from TB, I assume? No way they trade a couple of 23 year old core players in Cirelli and Cernak for that package. All their core players are still in their prime age (Kucherov, Stamkos, Hedman, Vasilevsky, Point, Cirelli, Cernak, Sergachev) with Hedman and Stamkos being a bit older but super stars usually play well into mid 30's so they still have about 5 years to win as many cups as possible before some of that core ages out. I fully expect Tampa to win a few more cups in their current window as long as they can keep their core intact. Gosh as I write this post, I just realized how deep that team is. Even players like Johnson, Killorn, Palat, and Miller are good players but they are considered cap dumps by the Bolts. It's just depressing to know that it's just dang hard it is to win a cup. How the heck can anyone beat that team? I think the NHL needs to impose cap based on tax rates. It's like Tampa is getting a boost to their salary cap because of low taxes. Seattle also doesn't have a state tax so about 10% lower that the players have to pay compared to players in Canada.

We don't need a 1st pairing defender like Hedman but more like Tanev, who will partner with Hughes to form a 1st pairing defence. I think those can be signed at around 5 mil. Hughes-RD Edler-Schmidt Rathbone/OJ-Myers We don't need that second pairing defender either. Just re-sign Edler at a discount, around 3mil. We also don't need a 2nd line winger. We will have Podkolzin and Hoglander. Yes, we need a 3C and probably a 4C if Beagle is on LTIR. Hopefully we can find a 3C at around 4-4.5 mil and 4C around 2 mil? It may be good to get a middle six winger. Miller-EP-Boeser Pearson-Horvat-Hoglander Motte-3C-Podkolzin Highmore-4C-4RW I think we leave 4RW spot open for some healthy internal competition. TODO list EP + Hughes for 12 mil RD for 5 mil 3C for 4 mil 4C for 2 mil Edler for 3 mil In total we need about 26 mil. We have 14 million in cap space as per Capfriendly. - Buyout Holtby and Virtanen saves us 3.8 + 2.5 mil = 6.3 mil. - LTIR for Beagle and Ferland gives us 6.5 mil. That gives us about 26 mil to work with. If we need more space, we will have to cap dump Roussel. With one year left and with a sweetener, we might be able to do it. But maybe even Roussel might be placed on the LTIR. He hasn't been able to stay in the lineup consistently since his knee injury.

Yikes. 6 mil for a 3C? I don't like the idea of paying any 3C, more money than 2C Horvat. Nothing against RNH, I think he is a good player. He has put up 50+ points consistently in this league. But if he comes here, it can't be more than players that will do more than him like Miller and Horvat. Paying 6+ mil for the next 5 or whatever long term deal we give to RNH has the makings of another Loui Eriksson. I don't know how you arrived at 10.5 mil but if we only have 10.5 mil to sign 5 players, we cannot spend 6 mil on 3C when there is RD positions that need to be filled. A chain (team) is as strong as its weakest link. If our back up and the depth around the lineup is filled with AHL players because we pay 6+ mil for RNH, I don't think we are going to be very successful next season.
-
I'm appalled at the thought of Canucks paying 7+ mil for n years to RNH where n >= 5. If he comes here, he is going to be the 6th best forward on this team next season. EP, Boeser, Horvat, Miller are already better than RNH but gets paid less. One could make argument that Hoglander is and will be better than RNH starting next season. And Podkolzin may also pass RNH in a year or two. Stay away as far as possible. I'd say RNH at 5 or less is a good signing though.

Pui's business doesn't really feel like a business. It sounds like she is exporting goods to overseas without paying proper import/export taxes. And those luxury handbags usually go anywhere from $1,000 to tens of thousands. If she has to set up a business account, she will have to set up a business first and any profit she makes needs to be taxed. Basically, she is trading illegally without realizing what she's doing, trying to back pocket profit to avoid having to pay taxes. It's good she got $1,600 back. Now, the government should go tax her for all the profit she realized without reporting it.

2021 draft gives me a similar vibe as 2011 draft (https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/draft/nhl2011e.html). There were 9 guys in 2011 that were considered to be similarly good, surefire NHLers with top 6F or top 4D potentials and that turned out to be the case. The #1 overall pick wasn't the best player out of the top 9 that year and I think the same will be true in 2021 draft. The guy we pick at #9 could end up being better than the #1 overall pick. There certainly doesn't seem like a superstar caliber player in this draft but we should be able to get a real good player at #9. We might get a Dougie Hamilton or Sean Couturier at #9. Also, if we trade #9, I would want to get some draft capital coming back our way even if it's a 2nd rounder or later. There will be good players that will drop due to limited in-person viewing (e.g., Kucherov in 2011). So, I'd keep the #9 overall unless it's a trade that is too good to pass up on. For example, an RHD under 25 with at least 3-5 years left before hitting UFA. Unfortunately, I feel that Seth Jones is too close to reaching UFA and his ask will surely be higher than 9 with Pietrangelo's 8.5 mil as a comparable. One player that I would consider trading #9 for is Ekblad. He is 25, has cap hit of 7.5 mil and is about 4 years away from UFA. But why would Florida trade a player signed at a good cap hit? And what else do we need to give up in order to get Ekblad? #9 overall itself will not be enough. Schmidt + 9 for Ekblad? I still don't see Florida taking a lesser player + prospect that will only help them later, when their team is closer to contention than we are. Another player that I would consider is Cernak but it will have to be as part of a bigger package. I think our #9 overall has higher value than Cernak but I can't see a package that makes sense for both teams. We might give up a prospect + #9 in exchange for Cernak + draft capital + forward (ideally Cirelli but maybe even Gourde or Palat). But I can't think of reasons why Tampa would give up a forward and a young RHD that is cap controlled. Maybe Tampa can use Cernak to dump some cap if they consider Palat/Gourde as cap dumps? Tampa does need to dump two players this season: two of Gourde, Palat, Johnson, Killorn, McDonaugh. That will give them enough cap space to fill the bottom 6 and bottom pairing.

Wow that was a great play by Troy "Tony" Stecher. But man this year's Canadian roster is like Spengler cup roster.
-
I wouldn't call that a mistake. Well, unless he could see the future, how can he know in 2016 (signing of Eriksson), that he would pick Pettersson and Hughes in 2017, 2018 and that they would become elite franchise players? Other signings like Myers, Roussel, and Beagle were needed to improve the bottom 6 and defence depth. Otherwise, we would see Chatfield on RD and Chaput and Megna on the 4th line.

Injecting quality youth every season. That is the most important metric for evaluating a GM on a rebuilding team followed by upward trajectory (as measured by say, points per game). JB did inject quality youth. The team improved every season since 2017 up until this abnormal season. He doesn't need to be defended for some of the misses on his signings during the retooling and rebuilding years. Now, the job gets even harder. Inject youth (continue to draft well) while adding roster players to help the team compete for the Cup.

Agree. Read my original post -- I said exactly what you said. If not for Marner's cap, I would love to have him on our team. But if he's cap is like 7ish, Toronto has no reason to trade the guy. I think we need players with good possession numbers that can constantly outplay the oppositions in the regular season to help us reach the playoffs.

Canucks and AVS/ TAMPA [Discussion]
khay replied to PunjabiCanucks's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
They sucked at the level of Edmonton Oilers before they finally arrived. MacKinnon took a step back for few years after that brilliant rookie season. Landeskog sort of underachieved -- well, to be fair, the expectations were way too high on him to be the next Forsberg. Trading a me first player in Duchene was a brilliant move by Sakic. It was an addition by subtraction and paved the way open for MacKinnon, Landeskog, and Raantanen to take over the team. As the OP states, we've got a good core group. We need to carefully chisel out the remaining roster positions for us to reach another level. -
Agree. But we need regular season players to help us get there. Once we are there, we've players that will get the job done. Marner doesn't have to be that guy.
-
We have guys that bring the grit and the clutch performances: Horvat, Miller, Hoglander, soon Podkolzin. We also have a game breaker and clutch performer in EP. Marner doesn't have to bare all the burden here. Tap into UFA for RHD, combined with Marner would ensure we make the playoffs next season and we have plenty of playoff performers that will step up and take us deep. The problem with getting Marner is that he will absolutely destroy our cap structure, like Tavares signing did for Toronto. Would love to get Marner on this team if not for his cap, as long as the cost is Schmidt+. But if he didn't have his 10+ mil cap, there would be no reason for Toronto to trade him.
