[Signing] Canucks re-sign Jake Virtanen
khay replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Good signing. I think he should be tried on the first line with JT and EP. Boeser can be the scoring winger on Bo's line. Brock's two way game has come along quite well too so he should be able to take over some tough minutes with Bo. -
Blackhawks core veterans “have had enough”
khay replied to grandmaster's topic in General Hockey Discussion
Honestly, Bowman hasn't done $hit other than having a HOF and best coach ever as dad. He inherited a great roster and a great coach that won him 3 cups. All he's done is to slowly piss away those assets one by one leading up to their current situation. That Panarin trade didn't make any sense. I feel like Panarin could have been had at around 7 (Nylander money). That would have put them in a situation to compete year in and year out. Personally, I'm happy to see Chicago be mediocre so... Go Stan! Continue with what you were doing! -
I support his effort towards coming back. But I think he should take a full year off. Don't aim for start of the season or mid season or anything like that. Too much is at stake to be doing what he did last season all over again.

Mark Andre Fleury - Accepting reduced role
khay replied to grandmaster's topic in General Hockey Discussion
Right... it's probably not clear but I was just saying that playfully as in, I said don't nobody help Vegas and then, my own team turns around and helps them literally 5 minutes after I said that, just thought it's funny. The most important thing is we filled an important hole and all Vegas got for trading an important player was a 3rd round pick. Just like Schmidt was a bargain deal too good to pass up, I'm sure someone is going to step up and take a good player off of Vegas at a bargain price whether it's MAF or someone else. That's all that I'm saying. -
[Signing] Maple Leafs sign Joe Thornton

This basically seals the deal I guess huh? No cup for Toronto this year? I mean, the guy hasn't won in 20 years playing on some great teams... could only mean that they lost because of him? -

I said don't nobody help VGK! in some other thread. 5 minutes later: JB trades for Nate Schmidt. I'm sure some team is going to benefit from this cap crunch. -
I'd first do my best to see if I can dump some salary so that I can trade for a top 6 winger at a bargain price from a cap crunched team. If the price is too steep to dump Eriksson et al, then I'll sign Jake before arbitration if it's under 3 mil for 1 year. I'd leave it up to TG to figure it out but I like him on the first line with Miller and Petey to start the season. Give him a chance to shine and let Brock run a line with Bo. And based on what JB has been saying, Hoglander has to really suck to not make the team out of camp. That gives us pretty decent scoring lines.

Bill Foley Hints at Canadian Division Next Season

Yep, I was referring to international travel. The guy I was replying to seems to be in the US. Thanks for the info though. It's helpful. -
Bill Foley Hints at Canadian Division Next Season
khay replied to Lionized27's topic in General Hockey Discussion
If you are Canadian, you can enter anytime you want. Just have to do this 2-week quarantine. -
Oh wait, you are asking a serious question. Thought you were joking. Um, I'd say no. The toughest thing about defence is the mental game. You have to constantly balance between being conservative and being aggressive and make the right decision. If you are too conservative, they will skate around you and cut to the net. If you are too aggressive and you miss, it's a breakaway. The gap control also is rather hard thing to master. It's going to be hard for a forward that never played defence at the pro level to learn over the summer or the course of the season. Conclusion: I don't think Virtanen can handle the mental stress of being a defenceman for a full 60 minute game. He can barely handle the winger's responsibilities, which are arguably the easiest amongst the four positions in hockey (G > D > C > W).

Bill Foley Hints at Canadian Division Next Season

That's true. I think there should be some interdivisional games to make it more interesting. -
Bill Foley Hints at Canadian Division Next Season

Canadian division will be fun to watch. I hope this happens. Perhaps they will let limited number of fans into the stadium? If so, the ticket prices will be crazy high with so many attractions like McDavid, TML with lot of people from Ontario living in Vancouver, the Habs, etc. -
[Signing] Canadiens re-sign Brendan Gallagher
khay replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Wow, makes me realize how big of a bargain Bo, Boeser, and JT Miller are. In the flat cap era, that's a bit much money for a player with quite a bit of mileage on his body. -
lol first NHLer to not be able to skate backwards?

We are perfectly cap compliant for this season so I don't see why we need to buyout Sutter... Unless the plan is to trade at another below par value like Schmidt or sign a UFA to a short term bargain deal, for example Killorn from TB. Edit: I'm assuming Ferland goes to LTIR. If not, then yea, we don't actually have much space to sign both AG + Virtanen.

That's where the OP is wrong. They draft 29 players, one from every team except Vegas. Vegas isn't going to receive any portion of the franchise fee and hence, they don't lose a player. The fact that Schmidt is on the roster as well as Tuch does not make sense as you pointed out but also just plain wrong since Vegas isn't part of this draft. And so many UFAs. Seattle will ice a decent roster, that's the point of paying 500 million dollars to start a franchise.

Stars played more aggressively and broke the cycle game much more frequently. I guess they had bit more snarl in their forward group who wasn't afraid to play more aggressively than we did? And when they had the puck, the Stars moved it up the ice pretty fast. Having two stalwarts on the backend made that easy. And of course, VGK started the serious on a goal scoring slump thanks to Demko's stellar performance. Getting Schmidt gives us a top 4D that can move the puck. OJ also knows a thing or two about moving the puck. It's gonna be an interesting season.

JB has been here 6 years, Sakic 7 years. Jim Benning started in 2014. Joe Sakic started in 2013. JB started with 6th overall pick in 2014. He inherited 2nd and 3rd overall picks from 1999 on the roster and a disgruntled former Selke winner drafted in 2003. OTOH, Joe Sakic was handed a 1st overall pick in 2013. He inherited a roster that featured a 2nd overall pick in 2011 and a 3rd overall pick in 2009 as well as future Selke winner also drafted in 2009. Roster on the rise vs roster on the decline, completely different starting points and the assets. And no, we are not 3 years behind Colorado.

[Signing] Golden Knights sign Alex Pietrangelo

Or better yet... Don't nobody trade with Vegas!! What's the penalty for not being cap compliant by season opener? -
[Signing] Canadiens sign Tyler Toffoli

COVID happened. Let me ask you this. Before COVID, say you were earning $5,000 a month and spending, say all of it. Now COVID happens and your business is earning only half of what you earned and probably will stay that way for the next n years. Do you still go ahead and spend $5,000 a month by borrowing money from the bank or do you slash your spending in preparation for things getting tougher? If you say you still spend $5,000, then good luck. I hope you got the analogy but just to be clear, with cap staying flat for the next n years and all NHL teams set to lose money, re-signing a supporting player to long term contracts have become difficult. Some owners are still signing off on such deals but that doesn't mean the Canucks will. My guess is the owner of this team is hesitant to sign-off on any long term deals for non-essential players. -
[Signing] Canadiens sign Tyler Toffoli
khay replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Aquillini. He's a business man. Any smart businessman can see that the teams are going to lose money. He won't sign off on long term contracts unless the player is a high impact player like EP, QH, OEL, and etc.
