I've come to accept the fact that the team has decided to go with the young players on ELC for next season. Moreover, the plan seems to be conservative cap spending in this COVID world + giving youth a chance + wait for bargain deals. This prevents the bonus from getting carried over to next season and allows the team to evaluate the young players. Sort of like taking a step back now so that we can take two steps forward in the future. I think there will be bargain deals to be had (cap crunched teams needing to shed good players) or if an impact player is available via trade at a below par value (e.g., OEL), they will still do those deals even if it means sacrificing the cap a bit. Toffoli, although a good player, would be a luxury and probably can be replaced in a season or two by Virtanen, Hog, Pod, or maybe even Lind. Marky was replaced by improved Demko + Holtby. We will see how it goes but I'm feeling pretty confidence in the tandem. Stecher is likely going to be replaced from within, my guess is Rafferty, Chatfield, and Tryamkin (later in the season) will be given the chances to step in. If Tryamkin does come over, he will be an upgrade over Stecher. Tanev isn't replaced yet, and this is where we will have to wait for a bargain deal to pop up somewhere. If we can replace or even upgrade on Tanev, this team will still be competitive enough to fight for the playoffs. It is disappointing that we missed out on all these good players, especially given that we were 1 game away from WCF. But I guess we have to play the long game.

[Rumour] Tyler Toffoli to hit free agency
khay replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Thanks for doing the numbers. Yes, it's not ideal. But note that Eriksson can be bought out in the last year of his contract, saving us 2.3m. If Roussel is not playing, he can be boughtout for 1.8m. That gives us additional 4.1m. Ferland is very likely to be on LTIR. He's tried a comeback 3, 4 times and each time didn't last more than a game. He's likely done. In total, we will have about 9-13 mil in cap space. And if the cap is still a problem because of bonus overage then, EP and QH will just have to be signed to bridge deals. We don't have a choice and they don't have much right. But I don't think bonus will be a problem since we will have 7 mil in space this season. -
[Rumour] Tyler Toffoli to hit free agency

We have 30+ mil coming off next season. Those contracts are not poorly planned and even if they are 1 year longer, it's only 6 mil, which would have been used to sign 2 veteran depth players, likely costing around 4 mil or possibly more. I don't think we make the playoffs and win two rounds without these guys eating up hard minutes, especially Beagle. OTOH, Roussel was a bit of a disappointment in the playoffs. -
[Rumour] Tyler Toffoli to hit free agency

It sure does seem like the management is confused. But I guess a lot has changed from when we acquired Toffoli to now. When we acquired Toffoli, it was pre-COVID and the cap was going up to 85mil. That alone would have been enough for us to keep Toffoli and Tanev. Now, the NHL has lost a lot of money in 2020 and will lose a lot of money assuming COVID continues into 2021. My wild guess is that the owners know we are going to lose money next season so they are more careful on signing off on big money contracts. That's why we lost Marky and Tanev and probably even Toffoli. I think JB may have been able to convince the fanboy in FA on acquiring OEL (if FA is as big a fan as we know him to be, he knows OEL would help this team to WCF at the minimum). But I think he's having trouble convincing FA on other deals. The team made the playoffs this season and have demonstrated their abilities to win in the playoffs unlike TML. The sad part is that the team we had was probably one big piece like AP or OEL away from WCF and maybe the SCF (even without Marky). But now, we've taken a huge hit on defence and possibly up front with Toffoli not returning. It's going to be a dog fight for the playoffs next season. -
[Report] 26 players elect salary arbitration

I think Miller-EP-Virtanen will be a good line. Horvat needs a scoring winger in Boeser more than EP and Miller needs a scoring winger. -

I agree that Jake deserves a pay bump. But he wasn't on pace for almost 50 points. He was on pace for 43 points. I bet they re-sign him at 3 mil. But your second point... there might be some truth to it. We are losing a fan fav like Stecher because we can't pay 1.9 mil? Edler-Stecher pairing and Hughes-Myers pairing would have held the ground at least during the regular season. I don't know what JB has up his sleeve but I'm pretty concerned about even making the playoffs next season. I just hope that JB is saving cap, because he knows there will be some desperate teams that will make good players available for peanuts. -
[Signing] Red Wings sign Troy Stecher

1.7 is a bit lower than I expected. I was hoping he would get 2.5 to 3 mil. The kid deserves to get paid. -
I think this had a lot to do with the mandate from the ownership. They wanted to make the playoffs as a proof that this young core can get it done. To achieve that, je had to go out there and try to build depth. We basically had 14, 15 NHL level forwards last season as a result. Now that this core has proven to be good, the ownership can be convinced to take a bit more patient approach and I'm sure that convincing was easy in a COVID world. I think building through the youth and within was JB's (and Linden's) preferred approach from the beginning. JB, in order to keep his job, deviated course from Linden, possibly contributing to Linden resigning from his position in disappointment. I'm a bit upset that we have not upgraded the team in any position as of now but it's only day 2 of free agency and there may still be trades. I'm also excited to see how the youth will perform. By the sound of things, Hoglander and OJ will be joining the team. Rathbone and Rafferty will be given every opportunity to make the jump as well. Podkolzin and Tryamkin are likely to come over once KHL season ends (assuming the NHL pushes the deadline to be more in line with the Jan 1st NHL season start). Miller-EP-Virtanen Pearson-Horvat-Boeser Hoglander-Sutter-Gaudette Motte-Beagle-MacEwen Roussel Edler-x Hughes-Myers OJ-x Benn Demko Holtby JB still has work to do -- there are 2 spots open on RD and we need a bit more forward depth. Maybe he'll pull off a trade similar to JT Miller trade. Get a quality D man from a team that badly needs to clear cap. Could still re-sign Toffoli.

I think he earned a longer leash with the last playoff run and that's allowed him to take a more patient approach. (i.e., no desperation signings and overpayments). Saving cap space for now, waiting for the bad contracts and Luongo recapture to come off the books all the while trying out the youth, it's not a bad approach. But there might be a step back next season? Vegas, Edmonton, Vancouver, Calgary were the top 4 teams in the Pacific. Vegas will stay at the top. Calgary improved their main weakness. Edmonton will be competitive. Vancouver's young guys will take a step forward. Making the playoffs is not guaranteed.

[Signing] Oilers sign Tyson Barrie
khay replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
He was smart to go to Edmonton. He learned his lesson in Toronto, that he needs to be the main guy on the PP. In Toronto, he was #2. In Vancouver, he will be #2. -

[Speculation] Canucks interested in Tyson Barrie
khay replied to brian42's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Other than Myers, theres's no one on that defence that can break cycles against bigger teams. We need defence that plays the body aggressively to stop the cycle. Edler's still good but he's also getting older. Depending on him for so much of the tough minutes without Tanev is a big ask. Up front, we don't have a Kesler or Burrows type player that plays the body and cuts the passing lanes. As it stands, we haven't addressed our weaknesses. -

[Signing] Flames sign Christopher Tanev
khay replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I hope so. But I don't see many options. Hamonic? Vatanen doesn't replace Tanev, maybe he replaces Stecher. Both? Tomorrow is going to be interesting. -

I'd agree that he made the right call, he's getting older, played a lot of tough minutes... but he needs to replace Tanev's minutes in some way. Tanev was eating up a lot of tough minutes. -

I believe he even scored a goal for Flames against the Canucks (in his first game as a Canuck of all games)? Would be a match made in heaven. -

I hope there's more coming because if we don't replace Tanev, we are basically throwing next season away. Don't tell me our defence next season is going to be Edler-Rafferty Hughes-Myers OJ-Benn Rathbone-Chatfield We have enough money to sign EP and QH. They are RFAs! They ain't getting 10+ mil. -

This makes sense. If that were the case, JB is being shrewd and decisive. But next season will be tough as we will be thrusting two rookie defencemen on defence? Or sign Barrie with Tanev money? Not signing any of our own UFAs is a bit puzzling given that at the beginning of the offseason, JB said he wants to revamp the D and the news that Toffoli was close. Either something changed internally (internal cap), just plain saving money for next next season and using next season for evaluation purposes, or both? The only logical thing that makes sense at this point is that we sign AP. But there's just so few news about us being connected to AP. I'm just puzzled. -

khay replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Yeah, maybe 4 years is a bit long. But then, could we have done 3 years at 5 mil? Unless we are signing someone else, I think rewarding Tanev with higher dollar amount for 1 year less term would have worked? Tanev doesn't come across as a guy that will say no. Funny thing is that we basically heard nothing about Tanev leading up to the offseason. -

khay replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Not cheap. Honestly, I'm happy that he's the owner and no longer that cheap McCaw. I wouldn't call FA cheap by any measure. But maybe he's a smart guy that knows next few years is going to be $hit for the NHL? Tanev at 4.5 x 4 seems like a reasonable deal (one year longer) but then we could have gone 5m x 3 or something like that. Anyhow, I hope it's not true that there is an internal cap and that we are preparing to sign AP. -
[Signing] Flames sign Christopher Tanev
khay replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Up to now yes. But in a COVID world, maybe he wants to tighten up? As I said, it's just a mere speculation because Tanev at 4.5 was definitely a reasonable contract and yet, JB decided not to tender an offer. And it looks like we won't re-sign Toffoli either. Two possibilities: 1) There is an internal cap or 2) We are clearing cap space for big name UFA? Of course there is a third possibility that Canucks were so hooked on OEL that they didn't bother to care for Tanev's contract -- which I find hard to believe. -
