[Signing] Flames sign Christopher Tanev

I'm beginning to think that there is an internal cap set by the owner family. Well, unless the plan is to sign AP. -
[Rumour] Alex Pietrangelo to test free agency
khay replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Nah. JB's strength is drafting and to go 2 consecutive seasons without a first rounder pick really sucks. And if we must trade it, I'd rather us keep that pick around until the deadline to see if we can use it better. I think we can sign AP without losing Eriksson and Sutter. We have enough cap to fit AP. Ferland's 3.5 is going to LTIR. Send Eriksson and Baer to the minor to save 2 mil. We already have about 7-8 mil in space. That's enough to sign AG, JV, and AP. Sutter is coming off in 1 season and he is still a good roster player that can help us win, no need to lose an asset to get rid of him. And at this point, we will just have to ride out Eriksson's contract. -

Brock. Miller-EP-Virtanen Pearson-Horvat-Boeser === With OEL deal off the table and Tanev unlikely to come back, I'm not sure what JB is planning to do in terms of improving the defence. We have 8 mil space left + 3.5 mil for Ferland LTIR + 2 mil from sending Baer and Eriksson to AHL. That's about 13.5 mil. After signing Virtanen and Gaudette, we will have about 9 left. Enough space to sign AP. Hughes-AP Edler-Myers OJ-Benn Rathbone If Edler doesn't take a step back, this is a championship caliber defence. -
[Signing] Canucks sign Braden Holtby
khay replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
More I think about it, more I like this signing. I like the fact that JB is very decisive. Rather than committing to 5+ years to 30+ year old goalie, he just said, we are going with the young guy that showed so much promise throughout his career. One problem with Gillis was that he became too loyal to his players and wasn't able to move on from anyone and the core staled very quick as a result. -
Thanks for the first playoff appearance in 5 season Marky. It was a good one.

Good signing and at decent cap. Provides cup winner to the roster. -
lol no way we trade Demko especially with Markstrom almost set to leave via free agency. If Arizona didn't and will not budge on Demko then there's 0% chance that this trade will be made. A player that was publicly on the trade market with only 1 or 2 teams on his list... only to be pulled off the market after so much storylines... well, we saw what happened with Luongo. My bet: OEL will be traded by TDL and at a discounted price. OEL to Vancouver for one prospect + young roster player (similar to Luongo for Markstrom + Matthias).
-
That makes more sense. No way Arizona retains 25% on OEL for that package. Would love to keep Lind but that deal is still really good for us (if true). All JB needs to do is find a way to dump Eriksson and re-sign Tanev. I think it's a smart idea to go for the cup while EP and QH are on the last year of their ELCs and while Edler is still a top 3D.
-
Sutter + Rafferty or Lind + Virtanen for OEL at 25% retained? If true, JB fleeced Arizona. I hope it's Rafferty not Lind though.
-
Wait, didn't they win the play-in round? Anyhow, I agree that OEL would be a great fit here. I think we can fit his salary in under the cap even if we don't send Eriksson their way as long as we don't re-sign any of our own UFAs. I think Toffoli's production can probably be replaced relatively easily. I think adding OEL and making our defence better somewhat offsets losing Marky. Demko + a capable goaltender may be able to hold the fort. But I don't know who's going to replace Tanev. All that hard PK minutes and defensive assignments? I'd like to re-sign Tanev but the only way for us to do that is if we dump either Eriksson or trade Sutter+.
-
I think Sedins signed the night before free agency. Gillis flew over to Sweden to get them signed. Edler also didn't hit UFA. Maybe I'm wrong. Don't remember Nazzy but I think he was also re-signed before UFA. If Marky is going to UFA, he will definitely be getting the term and money from some team. Been wrong before and hope I'm wrong but I'd say Marky is good as gone if not re-signed by the opening of UFA.
-
That almost sounds like we are not going to bring any of the 3 back. I think Marky's hole will be filled as JB said within (Demko) and probably through free agency. Losing Toffoli is also fine. We might pick up a player like Wenneberg to strengthen scoring depth, move Gaud to wing, JV might take a step forward, and etc. But how the heck are we going to replace Tanev? Unless JB is all in on getting OEL. Even then, OEL is not going to replace all of the tough minutes that Tanev played like the PK for example. Maybe JB is planning on signing AP?

(Discussion) Marc Andre Fleury to the Canucks
khay replied to flickyoursedin's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Would love to but w/o cap retention, it's nearly impossible for the Canucks to take on his contract. -
Did you write the bolded or was it auto correction? Because if it's latter, that's pretty damn smart auto correction. If former, well, it reads weird. === Edler, OEL, Hughes, Tanev, and Myers on the same defence corps measures up against any defence in this league. The top 4 teams in the West were us, Vegas, Dallas, and Colorado. That defence corps measures up favorably against Dallas and Vegas and don't even have to mention Colorado unless they sign AP. If Vegas signs AP, then it's even more important that we get this deal done and re-sign Tanev. === People think loading up on LD is a problem but in the playoffs, it's not a problem. It's a blessing. Defence pairings always get mixed up when a player goes down for an injury or after a penalty kill or even in the overtime in the playoffs where the bench gets shortened. If we get OEL, I see Hughes as playing a free role like Brent Burns. Green should deploy him on the right and left side as needed. If we need more offence and we are pressuring the opposition, deploy QH on the right side with OEL on the left side. If we are up by 1 and defending, then send out OEL with Myers or Edler with Tanev out more often. A chance like this won't present itself in say 2 years when Edler (and maybe Tanev) aren't as good as they are now. In 2 years, Edler will be 36/37 and surely won't be eating up 20+ minutes. Honestly, I'll be disappointed if we don't pull this move off somehow. Re-signing Tanev is also imperative in my opinion, more so than re-signing Toffoli.

8+ mil??? Boeser's cap hit is 5.7 I think. And how do you know that he will only score 20-25 goals? Boeser just finished his 3rd year as a pro. And in those 3 years, he scored at 0.82 PPG. He has at least 10 good years of hockey ahead of him for which we can expect minimum of 0.82 PPG because he will get stronger, more experienced, and possibly even faster. When he enters his prime, which could be within a year or two, he could very well be hitting 30+ goals and 70+ points. That's the type of player we are surely going to want to trade for as we compete for the cup. Why trade such player only to want to get such player back later? If we trade Boeser, we might be facing another Cam Neely situation. Obviously, Boeser won't do what Neely did but he is capable of going to another team, breaks out and scores 40+ goals. You talk as if though Boeser is just going to fizzle out and settle down as a 20 goal scorer. Most of us fans think the best years for Boeser are yet to come.

That D is not an upgrade over last year's D. It's at best status quo. Goaltending is also worse. I would be scared if we go into next season with that defence. If we are not getting OEL, we need to bring Tanev back. Take Barrie out and re-sign Tanev and sign Dillon, I'd consider that an upgrade. If we do get OEL, we need to be going all in for the cup next season. We should bring. back Tanev, which can be managed if we can dump Eriksson. We got options to play Hughes on RD if needed: OEL-Tanev Edler-Hughes Dillon-Myers Benn OJ/Rathbone (whichever of the two that remains) That's revamping the D.

and inside. There will be statues of JB all over British Columbia. Some millions of years later after the human race is wiped out and new life begins. They will see the statutes of JB all over BC and think that he was god to the people who occupied BC.
-
Agree. But if they choose to trade Gaudette instead of Virtanen, I'd rather keep Sutter and find a way to send Eriksson. Sutter is still a roster player that can play 3C.

You didn't finish you sentence. Yes, please become the GM of Arizona and make that trade for us.

Somehow people are so bothered by 8.5 mil cap in year 2026 that they fail to see this. There are many ways to the cup but IMO, two top pairing defencemen + a legit goalie is the best and most surefire way to the cup. Until now, our only course of option was to just hope that Hughes becomes a true #1 and that we build deep enough forward depth backed by a solid goaltending. If you look at the past cup champs, the most common combination is 2 super star forwards + 1 top defenceman + solid goaltending surrounded by good depth. It's possible to fit in an extra superstar forward but getting a 2 #1 defenceman is nearly impossible these days. Tampa: Kucherov + Point + (Stamkos) + Hedman + Vasilevskiy. Blues: O'Reilly + Tarasenko + (Schenn) + Pietrangelo + the guy who thought he should have Calder last season and Petey taught a lesson or two in this post season. Capitals: OV + Backstrom + (Kuzetsov) + Carlsson + Holtby. Penguins: Crosby + Malkin + (Kessel) + Letang + Murray. Hawks: Kane + Toewes + Keith + Crawford. Kings: Kopitar + Carter + Doughty + Quick. We have EP + Horvat + (Miller) + Hughes + Demko/Markstrom. Even if EP reaches the level of Peter Forsberg, Joe Sakic, or Pavel Datsyuk, there is a drop off from our #1 forward to #2 forward after EP. And on top of that, Hughes has to reach the level of Leetch for us to even have a chance and that's if Horvat truly becomes the next O'Reilly and/or Boeser becomes a perenniel 40 goal scorer. Since the cap era began, icing two #1 defencemen has only been achieved by the Ducks in 2007. Maybe it's possible to argue that 2008 Red Wings came close two icing two #1s: 2008 Red Wings had Lidstrom (the best defenceman in the last 20-30 years) + Rafalski (an offensive machine on the backend) working with Zetterberg and Datsyuk. 2007 Ducks with Pronger and Niedermayer. And their best forward was 37 year old Teemu Selanne. He was still productive and was supported by pretty good forward depth including young Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry but that team goes no where without Pronger and Niedermayer. ==== 2003 Stevens and Niedermayer. Of course they also had Brodeur. 2002 Red Wings with Chelios and Lidstrom. 2001 Avs had Blake, Bourque, and Foote. 2000 Steves and Niedermayer again. 1999 Zubov, Hatcher. Hatcher is more of a #2 but in the dead puck era, he was the prototypical big physical defenceman. We could be the second team to ice 2 #1s since the Ducks. And that will more than make up for having one less superstar forward. Yeah it looks like we will have to give up one of the two. I'd say defence prospect (Rathbone or OJ) + lottery protected 1st rounder + a roster player (Jake or Gaudette) is a good deal for the both sides. The only question is if we can send Eriksson over by adding a sweetener like the second round pick in 2022 or 2023? Honestly, that deal is better than the one we got from the Ducks in the Kesler trade. Sbisa was 6/7 defenceman with very little upside to become a top 4 + 24th overall + Bonino. At least Rathbone (and OJ) has top 4 potential, our 1st in 2022 should be in the 20-31 range + Jake (and Gaudette) is a bit younger than Bonino and has an upside to be a 20 goal scorers (or 50 point scorer if it's Gaud).

This explains why it has been so quiet regarding Tanev, Toffoli, and our other free agents.
-
0% chance they get 10 or more. Less than 50% chance they get more than 9. My bet is 8-9 on a long term contract and 5.5-7 on a bridge deal.
-
Think about Hossa. That was 12 years contract. But they won 3 cups with him and I'd say it was well worth it. We need our version of Hossa (on the backend instead of up front since our forward group is already good minus some depth) to get us over the elite teams in the NHL. It's a long contract but a risk that I'm willing to take. The cap is staying the same (economy doesn't get better) or will go up if economy gets back to normal. Cap could be 90 million dollars in 4-5 years for all we know. 8.5. mil might not be too bad 5 years from now. And the nice thing is that 8.5 for OEL doesn't destroy our cap structure like Toronto did with Tavares at 11+ mil. QH and EP are going to get 8-9 mil anyways. It was LE that was stopping us from adding another high caliber player and if we get to dump him on Arizona while getting OEL, then that sounds almost too good to me. Let's say Colorado pays up to get AP via UFA... Colorado is then going to be new Chicago for us. In the arms race, sometimes you just have to take a (calculated) risk. A very good player has listed us and some $hitty team out in the East as the only teams that he is willing to be traded to. It's a chance to get a bargain deal like Anaheim did with us for Kesler. It'd be stupid not to exploit this opportunity, well unless they want Boeser.
-
9 games is not enough to be generalizing a player. Not sure if OEL lost a step but whenever I've watched him play live, I was always impressed. There's one player that always has the puck and it was always him on Swedish national team or on Arizona. If we get him, we can send out Hughes followed up by OEL. That's a great luxury and exactly the level of talent depth you need to get by the best teams of the NHL. I'm a Canucks fan and sure love Edler. I'm not going to argue who is the better player, let's just say they are similarly good. OEL did produce better offensive numbers consistently for longer periods of time.
