But to be fair to that guy, Vilardi will be a pretty good player for the Kings. Just not as special as Petey
-
Sucks. They should have promoted him to an assistant coach.
-
Interesting. We have 3 spots. I think Juolevi requires protection. Edler will be a UFA. So we aren't going to need to protect him assuming Seattle doesn't pick a pending UFA. Tanev will need protection if brought back. If not, we can protect Myers. If we acquire Dumba, we should be able to protect him from Seattle.

[Speculation] Erik Gustafsson to test free agency
khay replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Somehow, I thought it was Erik Gudbranson. And if it were Gud, I was thinking that it might be worth bringing him back at 2-3 mil to pair with Hughes. -
Aha, got ya. Canucks should try to sign him but if the ask is too much then, we just have to walk away. If he likes it here and wants to stay, it just can't be more than 6 mil. If I'm Marky, I'd go with the team that I know that I can do well. He's earned the right to be a UFA and if he thinks he can get more money and dollar elsewhere, and if that's more important than stability, then he should and he will leave. The 4 year term is because that is the only way for the Canucks to reward him. I don't know about you but if a team that I play for is offering me 4 year term at reasonable dollar amount, I'd see it as a sign of loyalty. That's a statement of confidence in your ability as a starting goalie. He would prefer NMC/NTC but given the nature of the business, we just can't. If he think that's because we aren't loyal to him, then I guess he will leave.
-
What? If Markstrom signs 4 year deal at 6 million per without NMC nor NTC, that contract is guaranteed. So if Seattle picks him, Seattle is going to have to pay him 6 mil. If Canucks can't trade him, then Canucks have to pay him 6 mil. He doesn't lose dollar for anything. From the player's perspective, if they don't care where they play, NMC/NTC doesn't matter. It only matters if they want to decide where they play.
-
Or make the hard call and trade one for an asset like a draft pick or a young player that doesn't need protection. There should be teams that have space to protect a goalie and willing to give up an asset to get a goalie like Markstrom or Demko. No NMC for Marky so that we can trade him freely if need be, even if it means more dollar.

[Speculation] Canucks looking to move Jake Virtanen

Bure will score on the 4th line. He will score no matter who he plays with. -

Even if he scores against us? -
Reeves doesn't need to be settled down. He took a 5 minute major. Shame on our PP for not burning Vegas with not even getting at least 3 shots on net, let alone 3 goals like the Sharks did last year. I'd say let Reeves run around. We don't need Martins.

Are the Vancouver Canucks Canada's best chance at a Stanley Cup?
khay replied to Canucks_fo_life's topic in Canucks Talk
I'd say we leapfrogged Calgary and Edmonton for sure. Ottawa and Montreal weren't ahead of us. I think Winnipeg still has more speed and balance in their top 6 than we do. Their goaltending is ahead of us. Although their defence had to be rebuilt but they did a decent job thus far and they have Laine as a trade chip to possibly improve the defence even more in the off season. And they got a GM that isn't afraid to make the necessary moves unlike the one in Toronto. I'd say we are right behind Winnipeg in the west. Depending on Petey and Hughes' progress, we could surpass them in a year. Our defence would also need to improve. A #1 minute muncher would put us over the hump... For the time being, just get Tanev back on a 2 year Edler-esque deal and test out guys like OJ, Rathbone, and maybe even Tryamkin can step up. I wouldn't be against starting next season with Hughes, Edler, Tanev, Myers, Benn, and one of OJ or Rathbone (or keep Fanta and trade Benn). And in mid season, bring Tryamkin over from Russia. Tryamkin should be an upgrade over Stecher, at least in protecting the crease and in the physicality department and OJ/Rathbone with their vision, skating, and puck moving abilities would offer some upgrade over Benn/Fanta/Stecher. As for Toronto... the way Toronto is built and with how tough their division is, it seems like they will never get past the first round. I just don't see them beating the two top seeds in their division, Tampa and Boston. Both of these teams have balance in every position including goaltending (if Rask stays). Even if they got lucky and got a top seed in their division, they are vulnerable to an upset by a wild card team like the Blue Jackets. But I hesitate to put us in front of Toronto yet because they have the assets to improve the team. I think if they have an astute GM, they could be one or two smart moves away from addressing their weakness on defence. Also, Boston's window may be slowly closing with aging of some of their players. I'd say Toronto is ahead of us if you just compare the teams but with tough division and unbalanced lineup, combined with amateur GM, they have near zero chance to win a cup so I guess we are a bit ahead if measured by the chance to win a cup. So, Winnipeg >= Canucks > Toronto = Calgary > Montreal = Edmonton > Ottawa. -
[Rumour] Oilers interested in Penquins G Matt Murray
khay replied to Mackcanuck's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Would love to see Boeser and EP light up Murray. And Edmonton loses a 1st? lol -
How does this team stack up compared to previous ones?

Bit of 2006-07 team vibe as well. We were overmatched and ultimately lost to the Ducks in 5, who went on to win it all. We lost to Vegas in 7, who are a favorite to win it all. If it were a normal year with regular rest between playoff games, we might have been able to pull off an upset. So in that sense, this team did better than 2006-07 team although both teams failed to advance to WCF. Both teams trying to build on speed and skill. Great goaltending Luongo vs Markstron/Demko. Star players about couple years before they hit their prime in Sedins vs EP/Hughes. Engine of the team in Kesler vs Horvat. Kesler is more feisty and played agitator role with little offence to start his career whereas Bo brought more consistent offence from start of his career. -
Players didn't give up. They were just following the game plan designed by the coaches. They gave their all, and I never said that they gave up. Management doesn't have anything to give up, they have zero input in the games. But the coaches... Seriously, giving up the blue line on purpose so that you can keep them to the outside... I've never seen such a game plan before this current coaching staff. It would make more sense if Vegas just gained the blue line with ease because they have good skaters. And also, there is a difference between games 5,6 vs game 7. Games 5 and 6, we were able to generate some chances (more than just one). We may have been outplayed but we tried to play the game at both ends of the ice. I didn't feel like we were intentionally giving up the blue line in games 5, 6. Vegas was just good at gaining the zone and the team defence did a good job of keeping them to the outside. That's +1 for the coaching staff for instructing them how to deal with Vegas once they gain the blue line. But game 7 was a completely different story. It really felt like they decided to adopt it as a strategy, to just give up the blue line and defend the middle. It would make me feel a lot better if Vegas was just more hungry for the win and they came out with everything they got and that we were just worn out by all the games, rather than to hear that game 7 was by design. If that was by design, the coaches chose the game plan that left us with only one way to win: a shutout. We would at most score 1 goal with that game plan and yeah, we almost got lucky with Boeser 2-on-1. The plan almost worked I guess. I hope that game 7 was not by design because then, it casts shadow over Green's judgement as a coach.
-
I'd rather us play the trap game than give up the offensive zone and keep them to the perimeter. That bit where JB compliments the team for playing hard in the defensive zone and keeping them to the outside, well it sounds like that was by design. It was truly a bitter thing to hear. The coaches kind of gave up I guess?
-
But if we lose all 3, we are not making the playoffs next season. We barely made the playoffs this season with Tanev and Markstrom playing at their best and with Toffoli replacing Boeser's production. Can't afford all 3 anyways, but we gotta sign at least Tanev. Replacing a top4 RHD is going to be extremely difficult.
-
I think you are right. Reading between the lines in the context where JB brought up JV, he wants to re-sign JV but at low cost.

[Speculation] Canucks looking to move Jake Virtanen
khay replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Sucks. I was hoping Virtanen would pan out in Vancouver. He was just realizing his potential to become a consistent 20 goal scorer... Well, if they do ship him out, I hope we get a good player in return. -
Trading Boeser because he "might" cause JT to be paid upwards of 8 mil, 3 years later, is indeed what an alarmist would do. I feel like if EP and Hughes contracts are only little bit north of 8, say 8.5 or 9, that would set up a very nice salary structure for the team moving forward. And Boeser's next contract will fit within 6-7 range, unless he reaches his potential and becomes a consistent 40 goal scorer.
-
I don't mind trading within the division. But my main concern with this trade is Neal. We have Eriksson at 6mil, a clear deadweight. If Neal falters, that's another anchor of a contract (even if 25% retained). The way I see it, the team really cannot afford to carry any deadweight contract. If Edmonton really needs a RH center, then I might even do Sutter for Khaira straight up. Khaira is a big body that can help our bottom 6 and we free up about 3m of cap space by trading Sutter; although, I don't know if the Oilers have cap space for Sutter though. With the freed up cap space, if all of the players take a bit of a discount, maybe we can fit Toffoli in. I would like to see Pearson-Horvat-Toffoli as a line together or even Miller-EP-Toffoli for a full season.
-
That's a good take on the situation. Maybe I was overly optimistic. We will see how things go. We have a lot of contracts that are up and it will take up all of our cap space + any relief from LTIR just to keep the same guys here minus Tofu and Tony. I would like to see JB tinker the bottom 6 a bit. Fill it with guys that are younger, stronger, and faster. Gaudette is indeed a trade option but he is exactly what we need moving forward, younger and faster player that will get stronger so I'm hesitant to trade him as a cap dump. If a team is interested in Gaudette at 3-3.5 mil, I'd work out a trade with that team rather before it gets to an offersheet. I highly doubt any team would offer 3-3.5 mil to Gaud though. Under the normal circumstances, maybe. But with cap staying flat for the next few seasons and so much uncertainty, it's very unlikely. Sutter is still serviceable but he will need to be moved to re-sign all the players if worst case becomes the reality (offer sheet + arbitration). I think he can be moved without including a significant piece. Assuming we can't move Eriksson, Pearson-Bo-Eriksson may be the 2nd line to start the season... Hopefully a prospect like Hoglander, Lind, or Podkolzin changes that at some point during the course of the season.
-
Agree with his assessment. Re-sign Marky at <= 6 mil, then if possible, re-sign Tanev <= 5 mil. Can't afford Toffoli. Re-sign Virtanen at <= 1.75 and Motte <= 1.5. Can't afford Stecher. Re-sign Gauds at <= 1.25 and MacEwen <= 1. That's already 16.5 mil out of 17 mil cap space just to keep the same team as the beginning of the season. Surely, there will be improvement from within, all the core players will have more experience and will have few months to train. JB has to get super creative to improve the team next season. Eriksson, Roussel, and to some degree, Sutter should be replaced by cheaper and younger players. Unloading their contracts will not be easy although Sutter's contract may be moveable. Ferland will be on LTIR, giving up 3.5 mil of space. So if he can clear out one of 21, 26, or 20, that gives him some space to work with. Easiest route and maybe the right thing to do is to stay patient and don't make any big trade. Tinker with the bottom 6 by bringing in someone that can do what Ferland was supposed to do and otherwise just promote prospects to start the season and wait till TDL to make any moves necessary in preparation for the playoffs. Up front, Hoglander and Lind will be vying for a middle 6 spot. Podkolzin may join mid season. On the back end, Juolevi, Rathbone, and Rafferty will be vying for a bottom 6 spot. With Tryamkin a possibility to join mid season.

I voted Vegas in 6... but I won't be surprised if Dallas wins this series. They have 2 PMDs that can evade Vegas forecheck. And once you get past those aggressive forecheckers, they got forwards that have all of a sudden found a way to put the puck in the net in all sorts of ways (snipe, crash the net, tip ins, rebounds, etc). Ultimately, I see Khudobin as a weakness for Dallas and if they lose, it will be because of goaltending.

Petey and Hughes. Their performances throughout the regular season and the playoffs have led me to believing/hoping that they had yet another gear to win us that game 7. It turned out that they didn't have another gear (yet) but Petey and Hughes are only 21 and 20 respectively so I'm sure they'll get there. I'm just so impressed by what these two kids have achieved so far and how they have completely opened our contention window. With good management, I think this window will remain open for, maybe a decade. Looking forward to winning a cup or two during this window.
