  1. He's not a statistician by any measure though. Maybe a statistician wannabe? Or pretender? Agree that managing a team based on statistics alone doesn't work, but it should be used in every decision making process to corroborate your conclusions.
  2. Full season say 4-6 months in a bubble might be too much to ask from the players. I was thinking that they could have 4 hub cities, one for each division. Play for about 2 months where each team gets to play 4 times against each of the other teams in its division. Each time should have played 28 times except for Central division I guess. Central division will have to play few more times to even out the games. Then take 2-3 weeks off. Teams can hold practice in their home cities during this break. Then, do the same bubble as now, 2 hub cities, one for Eastern and one for Wester conferences to host inter divisional games? Here, teams would play at least 2 games against teams from another division. Central having 7 teams makes this a bit more difficult for the Western conference but it should be manageable. Then start the playoffs. They can start with the qualifying round since the teams will have only played 40-50 games. Not perfect but this at least gives the players some break to go home and be with their families.
  3. The way it's going in the US, COVID is going to be a problem until at least the end of next year. If there is a next season, it will have to be in a bubble and so I'd say the expanded roster is very likely. Team should be allowed to carry players signed to AHL contracts without those contracts counting against the cap as well as NHL players buried in the AHL (i.e., Baer), whose cap hit should reflect the fact that they are buried in the AHL (i.e., -1 mil). And when there is an injury (say LTIR), they would "call up" a player on an AHL contract, at which point the player's salary counts against the cap. I don't think they are going to allow cap to rise up though. NHL is going to have to get very creative. I think they are doing a good job thus far so I have high hopes there will be a next season.
  4. Agree on Gauds. Bo's second goal kind of showed VGK's tendencies. They tend to try and transition the puck way too quick, which works out for them more often than not but when there is a turnover, that's leading directly to goal scoring opportunities. Gaudette's skill set and motor is going to be more useful than MacEwen's physicality for this series. I was on the fence on Travis during the season but he has shown that he can adjust and come up with a game plan that works. I'm starting to think that he is a good coach and has potential to get better.
  5. I assume Smith has a target on his back now. Canucks should hit him hard every chance they get.
  6. Petey is a special player. His will and the drive to win is like Forsberg. I'm just so excited that he's a Canuck and that we get to watch him for the next 20 years.
  7. Like Kadri. Maybe they are already thinking about 2025 when Matthews goes to UFA. They need this first round pick to take over from Matthews in 2025.
  8. lol 11 million dollars for 7 seasons giving Toronto a discount of 0.5 million dollars compared San Jose's 11.5 million dollar offer... wait... that was Tavares. It's actually funny that nobody, even their own draft picks from Toronto (Marner) ever gives Toronto a discount.
  9. True. The media focusses on him far too much. Kept saying "toughest guy in the league" blah blah blah. I like DeBrusk but it was a poorly commentated game.
  10. The thing is, Reaves didn't do much yesterday. The only time I noticed him was when he was on the bench making chicken noises or getting hugged(?) by Roussel. 5 of their top 6 forwards scored. That's why we lost. Somehow Reaves seems to be on a lot of fans' minds when he was irrelevant yesterday. I'm more worried about Stone. The way he times his stick check to pickpocket Hughes and the way he clogs up the ice and causes turnovers in our zone, those things scared me. Reaves and his chicken noise didn't. Ignore Reaves and he will be irrelevant and he will try to make himself relevant by taking penalties.
  11. Class doesn't but antics don't either. Play hard, hit, score, and out hustle your opponents. Those things will fire your team up. That's what Rous should focus on. Trying to get in the goalie's head through chirping, not sure if that matters much. Petey and Hughes aren't getting fired up watching Rous take 10 minute misconduct penalty or starting up meaningless conversation with Lehner during pregame skate.
  12. That's condescending the way DeBoer and the Vegas team talks about it. I think the Canucks will come out strong for game 2.
  13. Although Roussel is not why we lost, I agree. That was not needed. I just hope he didn't cross the line with his chirping to Lehner, especially since Lehner has openly stated he suffered from mental problem/alcoholism. Just compete hard and win on the scoresheet, don't bother with the antics.
  14. What impressed me the most about the Vegas was not that they are a big team but how quick they were to get to places. They clogged up the ice, took away space from QH and the rest of the Canucks. Honestly, I don't think Vegas was worried about being overly physical like the Blues or like the Wilds in the first game against them. They just clogged up the space, took the body only when needed, and didn't allow the puck to make it's way up the ice in any dangerous way, nearly 0 dangerous rushes. It almost felt like they had 6 players on the ice because they were so quick. Before the series began, I thought the only chance we have to win the series was to play a run-n-gun hockey and hope that our goalie can bail us out more often than the other goalie can bail out his team. Vegas' play somewhat reminded me of gegenpressing used by Jurgen Klopp in Liverpool. The aggressive forechecking used by Vegas basically prevented any chance of playing run-n-gun hockey. DeBoer is a good coach, I can see why they let Gallant go in favor of DeBoer. It's going to be interesting to see what Travis does to counter this.
  15. That's a good read. It would help open up the Canucks window to contend should Toffoli be had at a bargain deal. And when his contract is about to expire in 3-4 years, our draft picks from 2018/2019 (e.g., Hog and Podz) will be ready to take over the scoring role from Toffoli to keep the window open as long as possible.
  16. I'd keep Gaudette in at least for game 1 to see what kind of series this is going to be. All indication is that this will be a high scoring series so I think Gaudette's speed and skill might be needed. But yeah, if the VGK turns this series into physical series, Mac would need to be inserted.
  17. Nylander will only get you one player and that player will be inferior to Nylander unless Toronto adds. Every team knows Toronto is in a cap hell and that they aren't going anywhere until they fix the core. No GM in their right mind will give up a top 3D signed at decent term for Nylander as a result. If they didn't trade Kadri and didn't sign Tavares, trading Nylander makes perfect sense to upgrade their defence. Nylander is a 30 goal scorer (although not a playoff performer) signed at 7 mil cap. Value-wise, it's not that off. Although Marner is paid at least 2 million dollars more than his worth, I think their redundancy is at the center position with Tavares and Matthews. Toronto's problems won't be solved unless they trade away one of those two. Toronto signing Tavares at that cap hit is a lesson to be learned. I guess they thought they were getting their Hossa in Tavares, that one missing piece to propel you to multiple cups. But note that Chicago circumvented (i.e., cheated) the cap to get Hossa. They reaped the benefits from that 12 year contract by winning 3 cups without having to pay the penalty for it in any form. With the cap circumvention no longer possible, Canucks better be patient and wait for the right deal like JT Miller deal to come up.
  18. They need to offload one of Marner, Matthews, or Tavares to get at least two players 2C (because they traded away Kadri) + top 4D that can actually play defence. It looks like Eriksson Ek is that 2C although his scoring production is not quite there yet. Dumba is also a good option but he's more of an offensive D-man, I think they should go for someone that can settle the game down, like OEL in Arizona. I think you have the right idea but Toronto will never do this trade anyways. They think Matthews is Mario Lemieux.
  19. This team honestly reminds me of 2009 Chicago Blackhawks when they beat the Flames and us to get to the WCF. It feels like they score goals with ease have fast and tenacious players throughout the lineup.
  20. AV will take the Flyers to the cup final like he did with the Rangers. But, he will come up short for the 3rd time in SCF, this time falling to one of his former teams.
  21. Can't tell if Dallas is winning because they are great or because Calgary sucks.
  22. lol what a joke NHL is. Strategy to win in the playoffs: dress a goon to break the jaw of opposition's star in game 1 and keep him out for the rest of the series. I honestly thought that should be at least 4-5 games and I don't even like Gallagher and the Canadiens.
  23. Jake with Petey and Miller is doing (surprisingly) well. Virtanen with that speed creates space for Miller and EP. Only if Boeser can get going. But his foot speed makes him irrelevant in the series.
