I think there’s some situations you might want Hughes and Hronek out together for but given both of their abilities to drive play got to think most of their 5 on 5 play they will be anchoring pairings of their own.

Ya but.  H and H together all year will be dominant as a top pair.  With Cole and Soucy available for 2nd pair I vote to go with H and H and drive play and intimidate teams. If they are out with Petey's line or Miller's line they are gonna push the play hard against the opponent.

I like that personally.  I don't wanna hedge bets with two guys with that talent level. Go for it.

Disagree he was good when healthy and a massive part of our pk. Most are just too uneducated to see how much of an impact he made defensively when healthy.

Nah that's a brutal take.  He was overpaid and often injured. His impact on the team was muted by injury and his cap hit was a problem.  I have had season tix for years and I watched Sutter live many nights.

He was inconsistent as a player.  He was also often a passenger. You are entitled to your opinion - wrong though it may be.

But listen partner how about stopping taking swipes at other posters simply because they disagree with you?

Injuries are beyond his or the teams control, he was good and our PK was solid when he was here. It has struggled a lot since he’s been off the team.

Nah he was very overpaid and was a big disappointment.  Never lived up to his paycheck or expectations. One of the bigger Benning disappointments on a long term contract.

He's a defensive/shutdown center, judging him solely on points and plus minus with zero context is moronic

    Wow. Brutal comment partner.

My post highlighted how few games he played and how much he cost.   Comments about points and plus minus were only a part of the picture.

You need to improve your reading comprehension buddy.

Sutter was a big disappointment and an anchor contract while he was here. The majority of the fan base agrees with this. You somehow missed it.

  5. The 5 years he was playing in Vancouver he was 95 pts in 255 games and -31.  He was paid 4.375M per year.

    Brutal value.

People don't need to be nostalgic.  He was not good and many fans wanted him gone.

Sorry he got reaction to his Covid and vax and had a rough ride.  But he was not good while he was here.

    That's the reality.

  6. Last 2 years Benson had 161 pts in 118 reg season WHL games and 40 pts in 30 playoff games.

    Local kid.

He will be ready to play in the NHL in a year.

Willander won't be ready for the NHL full time for 3 years.

Benson scale is Schroeder to top 6 point per game NHL'er.

Willander scale is Juolevi to Hughes partner.

Who is more likely to finish the highest on their scale? Hard to say.

Hoglander is tradeable and so is Garland in 2 years.  Having too many small wingers is not an issue. If Benson pans out the other guys can be moved.

Benson could positively affect the team for two years before Willander even shows up.

    Lots to consider here...

I don't see a contract signing in the offseason.  Pete is training hard this summer and will put in an eye-popping

performance in the coming season.  He is the Canucks franchise player, who will get a very lucrative contract

later in the new year.  The only questionable part of all this, is the term.  He's in the drivers' seat, so he can

take his time to decide what is best for his career.

Ya I think people expecting him to re-sign this summer are not correct.  If he puts up 110 points this season and waits until the end of the year or close to it, he can sign 8 x 12.5M for 100M total.

I would not be surprised if that is exactly what he does.  His agent is telling him that the cap is going up so don't be in a hurry. I figure he's gonna bet on himself.

It would worry me if he doesn’t sign before training camp. We know how much of a distraction contractual status can be for the player. Didn’t Brock a few years ago enter training camp without a deal? And then he had one of his worst seasons that year? Forgive me if that’s inaccurate, but I remember Boeser having a season like that due to contract negotiations.

There’s a lot at stake this upcoming season. The team starting without their absolute best player? That would be a massive blow. The team cannot afford to have a poor start to the season. They can’t afford to be behind the eight ball - yet again.

He's under contract for the upcoming year already. This is an extension we're talking about partner.

  9. Brock has 311 points in 398 games.

That is .781 points per game.

Problem is he misses a lot of games due to injury.  If he gets in shape that should translate into more durability.

82 games at .781 is 64 points. If being in shape improves his performance he could easily become a 75 point player. Guy is only 26.

I think he is going to become a much better player as he gets closer to his peak years.

He didn’t fit the Yzerplan. Whatever that is.

Yzerman is quickly starting to look more like Benning than a good GM.  (This after he dumps Hronek for picks and then dumps picks for DeBrincat...)  Zadina got sick of hearing how Detroit should have taken QH.  He didn't feel he was getting a good shake in Detroit so asked to go.  SJ is a bottom feeder that thought why not? If Zadina gets good minutes and some pp time he may have better numbers and get a better contract after this year. Doesn't mean he's a good player though.

  11. The team spends to the cap every year.  To call being at the cap limit a problem is not true - it happens every year.  The issue is how much room do you have the next year? The team has already improved a lot and will take another leap next year.

Biggest reason is next year there are a bunch of UFA's coming off the books and Canucks will have about 22M to spend.

Myers Pearson Beauvillier Blueger Joshua Dries Cole Irwin all become UFA's at the end of next year. Cap will go up 4M by recent projections.  Take away 2M increase in OEL cost and Canucks are left with about 22.5M of cap space.  After resigning Petey and Hronek with raises totalling about 5M there is still 17.5M to spend to improve the roster. That is a lot of cap flexibilty coming in one year's time.

That is very good news for this team.

Well at least in 2011, we weren't considered a high tax team.    Might want to check in on that.

In 2011 the top combined personal tax rate (bc plus fed) was 43.7%.

    In 2023 it is 53.5%

The last ten years has seen the NDP provincially and the Liberals federally add 10 percentage points to the tax rate.

We are now a tax pariah for NHL players. 15% higher tax rate than Florida Texas Washington and Nevada.

  13. Petey said no to WC cuz he couldn't get insured.  Who handles Bear that said ya go ahead and play?

He is going to lose some money by being injured.  He was probably going to sign around 3 years x 2.5 or so.  Now may get 1 year at 1 to 1.5M.

Why anyone goes to the WC when they are on an expiring contract is a mystery.

    Edit: other than Lucic lol.

So clearly management doesnt have any patience

Problem is theyve backed themselves into a corner with this buyout. Theyre clearing enough cap space but incurring a big enough cap hit to improve the club exactly 0%.

Id rather they have done nothing, and waited for OEL to rebound, but alternatively, do EVERYTHING

Assuming Pearson and Poolman ride LTIR all year long

    To Toronto:

    Demko

    To Vancouver:

    2023 1st (Bostons)

    Knies

    Niemela

(Toronto needs a goaltender and they need it now, no more of this matt murray nonsense)

    To LA

    Hoglander

    2023 3rd round pick (Torontos)

    To Vancouver

    Matt Roy

(LA has a glut of young defensemen who can take roy's place and could use the cap space, esp after signing Gavrikov)

    To Boston:

    2023 3rd round pick (Vancouvers)

    Noah Juulsen

    To Vancouver:

    Derek Forbort

Boston frees up cap space (they must do so) and gets a decent RD prospect who plays a similar style to forbort

    To Columbus:

    Vancouver 2023 1st (11oa)

    Boston 2023 1st (28oa)

    Vancouver 2024 1st (unprotected)

    Vasily Podkolzin

    To Vancouver:

    Columbus 2023 1st (3oa) - and draft Leo Carlsson

    To Arizona:

    Myers (after bonus is paid)

    To Vancouver:

    Future considerations

Arizona pays next to no real cash, can retain cap at the deadline, and flip Myers at the deadline to another team for a pick and have him off the books the following year.

    UFA Signings:

    Graves (5x5)

    Acciari (2x 2.5)

    Jarry (6x6)

    Lineup next year:

    Kuzmenko-Petey-Beauvillier

    Mikheyev-Miller-Boeser

    Joshua-Carlsson-Garland

    Studnicka-Acciari-Aman

    Hughes-Royt

    Graves-Hronek

Hirose-Forbort (Forbort can play the right side)

Better lineup and added Niemela + Knies to our prospect pool

    AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

    OEL was - 24.

How many games did you attend live?  Watching him live all year he could not turn and got beat wide to the left.

His offensive numbers were ok given his limited PP time but he wasn't anywhere near worth his contract based on his offense - and his defense was terrible.

Wait for him to rebound?? Ok you hit the nail on the head.  He is not going to rebound. Even if he has a better year next year he is still past being a player who is anywhere near worth the money. Buying him out is a money play.  And the right one.

So I absolutely think management did the right thing here and I absolutely think you are dreaming of puppies and rainbows if you want to wait for this guy to become worth his contract. He will only regress over time. Buyout was now.  Good move.  Benning was an idiot.
