In the 20 games from Dec 31 to early February, the Canucks went 4 - 13 - 3. That was the end of the season. What happened during that time? The LA fightfest and 1 - 0 loss. The follow up 9 - 1 pasting by Anaheim. The Torts Calgary meltdown. Losses to Phoenix and Dallas when the playoffs were still in reach. All that happened in about two weeks. Torts got a 6 game suspension and the team tanked. Henrik and Santo were injured. Torts didn't react properly by his own admission. Seriously, the coach has got to go. He has admitted that he didn't handle the loss of Henrik and Santo properly and coached the wrong style. He has admitted that the Calgary dressing room charge was an embaressing mistake. He coached them to the LA fightfest and set them up to get pasted by Anaheim by attempting to do the same thing again. Wrong, wong, wrong. This guy did nothing to redeem himself this year. 25th place finish. Last overall in the western conference in goals for. 26th in powerplay percentage. 28 points less in the standings than the last full year. Career bad years for multiple players. Wow. How could you do a worse job as a first year coach? Why in the H E double hockey sticks should he be brought back for another year?
-
Cold HT - so your point is that this year was all Gillis' fault. Fair enough. I guess the issue is did the coach do enough to warrant keeping him around or did he contribute significantly to the team's dismal season and thus earn a ticket out of town? If Gillis provided a crap roster to the coach what can you point to that Torts actually accomplished that leads one to believe he earned his right to stick around? Where in your opinion did he have success?

Dragon. Thanks for your response. I appreciate the fact that you are actually engaging in the debate. So many goofs on here just want to take pot shots and add nothing to the conversation. Do you support keeping Torts? Don't you think that if there are ample reasons to fire the coach then that is what should be done? This was a dismal season for a lot of reasons. But the fact that you feel some of them weren't the coach's fault entirely, is not a sufficient reason to keep him on - right?

Reasons Torts should go: 1. Canucks missed the playoffs. 2. Lowest goals for in the entire Western Conference. 3. 26th best powerplay in the league. 4. The Calgary dressing room incident. 5. Yelling at players on the bench in a demeaning manner. 6. Marginalizing players. 7. Boring hockey. 8. Massive number of injuries. 9. Terrible seasons by Daniel, Burrows, Hansen, Edler all at the same time. 10. Not starting Luongo in the Heritage Classic. 11. Playing Lack 17 games in a row and refusing to start Markstrom. 12. He has been at odds with the GM and owners, neither of whom publically supported him. These are ample reasons to terminate him. The only reason to keep him is that it is expensive as he has 4 years left on his contract (possible buyout clause notwithstanding). Let him go and let's start fresh with someone who fits. The reasons for letting Torts go are pretty clear when you take the time to look at them.

[PGT] OFFICIALLY ELIMINATED FROM THE PLAYOFF RACE
fanfor42 replied to Del Rio's topic in Canucks Talk
Ducks have so little respect for the Canucks that they started a rookie goaltender in his first game against the Canucks in a game Vancouver needed to win to stay alive. Wow. The rookie got a shutout in his first game. That is ridiculous. Man it's tough to be a fan sometimes. Anaheim is laughing at us. -
I think it is an honest interview. Gillis is as candid as he has ever been. His disappointment is palpable. He is also being a professional in his approach, pointing out that they will do a thorough review and make changes. The part I am most pleased about is that he wants the team to play an up tempo style of hockey as they did in 2011. Thank god. You know without saying it he is saying that Torts coached the team in a different direction than he as general manager feels the team should play. That is a major disconnect and has to be changed. He has suggested that Torts is capable of changing and coaching the team this way - he gives an AV example to prove his point. However, I don't really think Torts will have the chance as I believe Gillis will fire him - provided ownership leaves Gillis in charge for another year. Nowhere did he say we need to trade the Sedins for prospects and retain 35% of their salaries as has been suggested by morons on this forum.

Dane Fox is currently #1 in OHL playoff scoring. Three other Canuck prospects are in the top twelve including, Cassels, Gaunce and Horvat. This season is over for the Canucks. Next year is gonna be fun though!
-
Ghostie Hansen has 19 pts and is minus 7 this year. Next year he goes from 1.35m to 2.5 m in salary. He is 11th in scoring on the team and has had a very underwhelming season. All good reasons to look at moving him to make room for new blood. Cheers.

Canucks will unfortunately lose at least 3 of their next 5 and this season will be over. Having said that, I still think that next year's team will make the playoffs. MG sill stay. Torts will go. Jensen and Kassian will have good years. Kesler will be traded as will Hansen. Horvat will play and look good. We will have a couple effective new UFA's. Looking forward to 2015.
-
The rank and file fans want to give MG another year. Reading the responses this is clear. Sure there are lots of kneejerk responses along the way where people want his head. But at this point I think that most fans want to hedge their bets. People would love to see stability. They would love for Gillis' plans to come to fruition with a playoff appearance next year and a new future for the team. Everyone knows that good franchises have stable management. We would all love that to be the case here. Ya let him have another year. Change the coach though. Torts' style doesn't fit.

Futz you're not very bright are you? Yes he writes a letter every year. But read it.
-
Reading between the lines, Gillis is not going to be fired. In order for him to send this letter to the Season Ticket Holders he has to go through channels. Meaning he has ownership's permission to do it. Aquilini was in the war room during the trade deadline. He went to placate Luongo after the Schneider trade. He was widely reported as being behind the Torts hiring (although rumor has it the old man was really the decision maker). He is working hand in hand with Gillis. Gillis won't be fired. Gillis and Aquilini will fire Torts to signal change to the ticket holders.
-
It's sad when people say everything has already been said about Gillis and thus these posts are redundant. Absolutely not. As events unfold the story of Gillis changes. Currently the Canucks have two new scandals. The Kesler wants a trade scandal and the LU is being sat issue. How any thinking Canucks fan can dismiss these items is beyond me. Gillis made a mess of last year with the goalie fiasco. There was no reason to sit LU and start this all over again this year. And if you paid 300 for a ticket tomorrow don' t you deserve an explanation? Of course you do. This incompetent GM is classless and arrogant and if the owners had confidence in their own abilities they would fire him.

This edition of the Canucks is done kids. Boston will win in regulation. Canucks will lose again in regulation. Time to make a change to the core of this team. Love the Canucks. Always have always will. But it is time for a new group of core players and an exciting new time to be a fan. This group's time is over. Start the rebuild. Start the healing. GCG!
-
Hey kids, this team is no good. Seriously, they are a lousy team that is going downhill fast. I have 5 decades watching the Canucks and this edition is over. Don't spend a minute thinking there is a quick fix here with a trade or two. Too many problems. Too old. Too much baggage. Hey time for new blood and a total new start. Exciting when it finally happens.
-
Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Nash, Thornton and Marleau. Those are the only other forwards in the entire NHL who are as old as the Sedins and are making 7m or more on multi year deals.

Beautiful game by the Canucks. Absolutely beautiful. Couldn't care less if they lost. After the collapses and not sticking up for each other and all the teeth gnashing this was absolutely beautiful. the Kings were intimidated. Who gives a sh*t if Sestito over did it and got tossed and took a bunch of minutes. The Canucks finally, finally, finally showed the kings that they have a set of b*lls. This game gives the Canucks a boost in confidence that you don't get without paying a price. Nuf said.

Canucks are in the middle of a very tough 6 game stretch. LA, Ana, Pit, StL, LA and Ana. If they win tonight they are .500 at 1-1-1. Finishing these 6 games at .500 would be positive. These are some of the top teams in the league. Team has a much easier schedule second half of January and will rack up some points.
-
OP says a top 6 forward usually gets 50 to 60 points per year. That is just plan wrong. In 2011-12, the last full season, there is not one single team in the entire NHL that has 6 forwards with 50+ points. Most teams have 3 or 4.
-
Thanks for that intelligent comment. Did you watch the video? Gillis was asked to talk about his prospect depth. He listed 7 guys. Gaunce wasn't one of them. Not reading anything into it. Gillis simply doesn't think right now that Gaunce is worth being mentioned in the top 7 prospects that he chooses to discuss.
-
Gillis did not mention Gaunce in his interview about Canuck prospects. He talked about 7 prospects, Horvat, Shinkaruk, Corrado, Jensen, Cassels, McNally and Hutton. FFS Gaunce is a former first round pick and the GM didn't mention him in an interview about our prospects. Didn't mention him when he talked about 7 other prospects. This is not a mistake. Gillis clearly doesn't think that Gaunce is in our top 7 prospects right now. He may develop in the AHL or not. But there is no doubt that right now, Gillis does not consider Gaunce in the Canucks top 7 prospects.

Nope you're wrong. Yes Burrows broke into the NHL at 24 but he played half a year in the NHL/ AHL that year. Archibald has shown an ability to play in the NHL now. So, like Burrows, he needs a chance for an extended look of 10 to 20 games. No difference than Burrows got at 24. Stop thinking that nobody can come up and stick. Stop over thinking that guys have to be sent down to develop. Once they show what Archie has shown, you have to give them a chance for an extended look. Otherwise you are not developing them you are screwing with them. Give him 10 to 20 games to show what he can do. If there are injuries he may get more than 4th line minutes during his audition. Regardless, he has reached a point where learning will come faster at the NHL than the AHL level.
