I agree. Caufield is not a fit. Look I liked Cliff Ronning but he got knocked around a lot especially in the playoffs. That lessened his effectiveness. Johnny hockey has not looked effective in his playoff auditions. Caufield is a nice kid good hands, nifty but not a fit.

We should make the draft in Vancouver a good atmosphere

Cheer for Bettman. Booing him is old old old old old news. We are an up and coming team. Cheer your ass off for him...we wanna catch a few breaks in the future!! -
[Speculation] Lucic says he would like to play here

Nice sarcasm Higgy. Look the point is if they give up their 8th you take it. Otherwise you pass. How's that - sarcastic? -

Take on lucic for edm 8th and give a minor sweetener.. Then figure out Eriksson etc. If they won't give their 8th to relieve themselves of Lucic then pass. -
Lets open this to discussion Mike Gillis returning President
fanfor42 replied to aqua59's topic in Canucks Talk
I think the most salient question is what are the duties of the President? What is his relationship to the GM? What responsibilities does he have? I think those questions need to be addressed before determining who the right guy for the job is. Don't put the cart before the horse. Second issue is that it always seemed like Benning and Linden were tripping over each other. I don't think their roles were clearly defined and the result was the two of them contradicted each other on a nearly weekly basis. Would like to see that issue resolved before going out and hiring another President. -
It might cost $1000 for 3 or 4 people to do it in Abbotsford lol. But to go all the way to Russia to do it flights and accommodation etc etc gonna be 20k. Gotta really want the big guy for that price lol!

Thanks for a thoughtful proposal. So much better than most on here who just complain without offering any solutions. I agree that OJ Rathbone and Woo all have real upside. Having room for them when they're ready is key. My biggest issue with signing UFAS is you're married to the term you sign regardless of when your young prospects show they're ready. Personally as a season ticket holder I'm encouraged where we are at. Hughes will be a lot of fun next year. Would love to see Rafferty get a shot. Making the playoffs may be what the media thinks the fans are demanding - but for me I'm ok with another development year.
-
So what's your solution? Pointless post. The issue is should the nux sign ufas. Saying their current d is lousy means nothing. Again what's your solution?

To start the year the defense could look like this: Edler. Stecher Hughes Tanev Hutton Rafferty Briseboise Schenn Call ups Juolevi Sautner Teves To me thats not too bad as it allows for the devrlopment of several young guys. The issue with UFAS on defense is that they gotta be a hit not a miss or you're pushing guys down and not allowing them up. So ya. Nux can sign a UFA on D but if its a miss you're worse off and stuck with them.

One more old time comparable for the current Canucks core. Did Petey as Jean Ratelle did Brock as Frank Mahovalich and did Quinn as Phil Housley in their threads. For Bo it's a little tough. Under appreciated center with Captain attributes and undeniable drive. Ivan Boldirev comes to mind. 6 foot 190. Played 15 years with Chicago Vancouver and several others. 866 points in 1052 games. Very solid guy. Still under appreciated lol.

More fun finding old school comparables for the nux core. Did Petey as Jean Ratelle in his thread and did Brock as Frank Mahovalich in his thread. For Quinn we won't go quite as far back. Phil Housley. 5 foot 10 and 185 lbs. Quinn will likely play at about that weight in a couple years. Phil played 20 years for Buffalo calgary New jersey Chicago and Toronto. 1495 games 1232 points. High impact offensive Dman.

Having fun finding old school comparables for the new nux core. Did Petey as Jean Ratelle in the Petey thread. So for Brock I've heard Bossy and Kurri. But those aren't right. It's Frank Mahovalich. 6 foot 1 and 205 lbs. Played wing (frank was left boeser is right). 18 years with Leafs Red Wings and Canadiens. 1181 games 1103 points. Skated like a boeser. Bigger guy. Good shot but also smart on both sides of the puck like Brock. An under appreciated play maker. Great great teammate.

Seems to me that a real old school comparable for Petey is Jean Ratelle. 21 years with the Rangers and Bruins. 1281 games 1267 points. Very cerebral player. 6 foot 1 and 175 pounds. Played through a tough time in the league. HOF career. If Petey can become this it will be incredible for the Canucks. True number 1C. Cerebral great playmaker and provides 20 years of service by learning to be durable like a similar sized Ratelle. Hmm. I know most on here never saw him play but Jean is actually a great guy for Petey to emulate. Solid foundation for the nux for many years to come.

JB: I’ll make the phone call about the 1st overall pick
fanfor42 replied to Generational.EP40's topic in Canucks Talk
Will take more than 1 trade. Will have to move up to 2 or 3 first. Then try to do a deal for 1. Real expensive. You can tell from Bennings voice he doesn't think it's gonna be doable. -
2019 NHL Draft Lottery | April 9th, 5:00pm PT
fanfor42 replied to Roberts's topic in General Hockey Discussion
Luc Bourdon was 10th. He was going to be a really good player and he was a really good guy. Burrows sent arrows up to him with every goal. We're gonna get a very special player at 10. That's the Canuck way. -

Watching the draft lottery with my two year old grandson. This pick is gonna be big for him as he grows up! -
Sorry to hear Roussel just had acl surgery and recovery time is likely 7 months. Makes it about December 2019 before he plays and realistically Jan/Feb 2020 before he's feeling back to normal. You had a great year Antoine. Great to have you play so well that you reminded everyone of burrows! Bon chance and see you next year! Ps. Everyone wants you back as soon as possible. You're gonna do some great things in Vancouver!

[Speculation] Adam Fox testing UFA status next summer.
fanfor42 replied to Mathew Barzal's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
He's the same height as Stecher and Hughes. Can't see the nux very likely going with 3 starting defensemen at 5'10". -
Canucks will almost certainly finish 5 to 10 from the bottom. The most likely spots are 8 or 9. That means the most likely scenario has them staying put or dropping one spot and therefore drafting 8, 9 or 10. Most likely gives them a 5 or 6% chance of getting 1st overall and a 16 to 19% chance at picking top 3. By default that's about an 81% chance of drafting 8, 9 or 10.

If you look up NHL re drafts you will find the following: Horvat drafted 9 in 2013 redraft at 5 Virtanen drafted 6 in 2014 redraft at 22 Boeser drafted 23 in 2015 redraft at 8 Juolevi drafted 5 in 2016 redraft at 14 Pettersson drafted 5 in 2017 redraft at 1 Hughes drafted 7 in 2018 redraft tbd Granted these redrafts are opinion based, but they also look at production and represent a concensus of opinion. Virtanen on this basis is the worst top pick by the Canucks in the last 6 years. I think he has lots of room to grow. But the question is looming. Is he going to ever come anywhere close to his potential or is he going to remain a career underachiever? Would love to see him turn the corner, but remember he is only 1 year younger than Horvat and at this point isn't half the player that Bo is. He is older then Boeser and Pettersson and is no where near their elite level. C'mon Jake. Time to take control of your own career buddy.

I'm looking forward to getting the answer on OJ next season. I expect he will play at least half a season for the big club in 19/20 so then we will know. For me. He'll be a solid smoooth skating D who can headman the puck and plays well defensively. I see a 30 pt a year number 2 or 3 D for Olli in his career. Hard to say that's worth as much as Tkachuk would have been to the Canucks. But I think over time Olli will narrow that gap.

Is Markstrom now the Elite Goalie he was always projected to be?
fanfor42 replied to *Buzzsaw*'s topic in Canucks Talk
Markstrom has had a good to great half season. More evidence needed before he is deemed an elite goalie. For me he has moved from expendable to keeper but still has to prove his status as "elite" through his future play. Let's see if this year was a blip or the start of something great. Hope it's the latter.
