This is not NHL2017 with robot players. To tell professional players to do worse than their level best/ to actively sabotage their play so you can 'tank', is as unprofessional, counterproductive and stupid as it gets. You can't on one hand, be all for 'solid character guys who aren't complete, self-entitled a$$holes' and then expect these same players to chuck their integrity away and commit fraud/put up with fraud.
-
Indeed. Though these days, elite #1D are PMDs with good size, reach and skating. With Tanev, Stecher, Olli, Del Zotto and even Hutton all being in the current/immediate future plans, i'd say we need a D who can slap the puck well, play solid shut-down D and be quick on his feet to be our biggest need, defensively. And if we can compile that one missing link, i think that our top six would be cup-worthy. In a way i feel this team needs a Shea Weber type more than an Erik Karlsson type/Duncan Keith/OEL type.

You think every team will give a defenceman >5.5 mil per year ?
-
As i said, it also depends on the matchup. If the 31 1Ds in the league wasnt the comparable used, we'd not see practically every team's 1D making the 5 mil or more range. That salary range exists, because the general consensus to what a 'regular, run of the mill 1D' is, agrees with the way i described it.
-
Except i do think when one is being matched up day in, day out, with the best of the opposition and ending up at or near par performance, one is performing to the standard of a 1D. Again, what 'standard' you speak of, is dominance. Such dominance is seen from maybe 10 defencemen in the league, if that. And that is high end, elite 1D. Not your run of the mill, average 1D. For an average/low end 1D, i expect them to factor on the power play, end up eating 22-25 minutes per night and end up somewhere in the 'better than -10/-15' zone. That right there, is your average, run-of-the-mill, 1D performance. Indeed, which is why i said, typical 1D salary starts from 5M as the floor.

Well said. With Manny in our staff, i don't fear his face-off taking ability in the future. Atleast he is in good hands. However, i am perplexed as to why a playmaking offensive player, who's only major knock is strength at this point, would be slotted in to play wing, over centre -since wingers do more board battles than centremen. is it because board battles are rarer in the bigger rink ?

Personally, i'd say 99% people leave their helmets off, because it feels nicer for your head to be uncovered. Especially when you are about to spend 3 hrs with mostly helmets on, having the feeling of itchy & sweaty scalp that you can't get to, at the back of your mind while sitting on bench. This is also why players take off their helmets almost immediately after the game and give interviews on live tv with their hair looking like 'bed hair' after just being liberated. A vain man would spend atleast a couple of minutes straightening out his hair before going on national tv live.
-
Thats your opinion. In my Opinion, there are nearly 30 1Ds in the league and their lowest salary tends to be in the 5M zone. First, PK never sits at 3 or 3D level in any team. Not in terms of minutes or match-ups. And as i said, your definition of 1D is nice for a fan, pity thats not how real world negotiations & valuations work.

Thank you. Yes, i am hoping too that he is our future 1C, because i value 1C more than 1W, especially when we have no clear-cut 1C guy yet ( i see Bo as a low end 1C/high end 2C future). Do you think he is strong/weak/average on the face-offs for his age ?
-
A true 1D is the guy who handles top minutes for his team while having par or better performance. This means, Edler is/was a true 1D. What you are describing, are high end 1D. I hope you realize that 1D doesnt just mean 'Doughty/Keith/Lidsrom/Chara' zone- they are ELITE 1D.
-
I think he is entitled to 1st line D-money and his camp will be foolish not to demand term and money. And thats ok. Personally, i think 1D pay scale starts at $5M. Goes up to ~ 8M range. There are teams out there giving 1D time and money to 5-ish million dollars per. IMO, Guddy would probably be looking at 4.5-5M for 6 years. And i'd say he is worth every penny when he is on the ice. I see him in a bit of 'Willie Mitchell money' zone and it lines up IMO.

Is Elias playing LW this season ? Can anyone shed more light into this and to why this is so, if true ?
-
Please can we get back to monitoring Juolevi and less about could-have-been-comparisons on this very thread ?? Not that the points are not valid, but its tiresome to come to a thread about Juolevi, monitoring his progress and have to wade through a crap ton of Sargachev and what not else... Surely there are better places for that ?
-
Err, if he scores at anywhere over .0 PPG at SHL, he is more than likely to be ready to make the jump at NHL level. But it will be hard for him, because we are not going to go into next pre-season with just Bo-Sutter-Granlund-Gagner as our centre-men. The Sedins will likely get atleast a year at rebate if they want to or we will fill that spot through free agency before pre-season, thus likely making it hard for Elias to 'cement himself'. But if he has just the right amount of luck at that point (assuming all this comes to pass), he should be similar to Brock in seizing his moments.

Tryamkin isn't coming back, unless we 'Montreal' him and lure him back with something like 2 years at 5/6 mil. Because what will happen i feel is this: a) Tryamkin plateaus/gets injured/is not good enough/doesnt show his worth : he will stay in Russia. He's already said, he isn't playing here as 4/5D minutes. So he stays @ home. b ) Tryamkin develops into top D in the next 2 years. Tryamkin will wait for 'big fish contracts' in KHL- which will likely be in the 3-4 million dollars. Slava Voynov reportedly makes 4.5 mil for e.g. . We will definitely have to beat that. For that to be the case, it'd mean in 2 more seasons after this, there is no Edler, Tanev, DelZotto, Guddy with Stecher, Hutton, Juolevi , another draft pick all being average/below average. Ie, ruins. i think Tryamkin is gone most likely if our defence pans out in the next 2 years. He will most likely just stay in Russia and have a big KHL contract. There is an off-chance we may trade his rights and see him play in the NHL but then Canucks fans will be mad as hell if that happened, even if it were the right decision for the Canucks at that time.

Besides, we need to keep the 'passing to oneself from commentary feed' tradition alive. So replace " Sedin...to Sedin....to Sedin....he SCORES!' with 'Dahlin...to Dahlen...to Dahlin...to Dahlen...HE SCORES!!'
-
No. Eriksson is far more accomplished than Brock as a defensive forward and his place in the team as a defensive forward may only be challenged by Granny,Bo and Sutter.
-
2020 ie, 2 more years, after this one.
-
So is Jake actually gonna be right wing ?? I haven't watched the pre-season, so i don't know if his 'left wing' position from Utica is still where he plays
-
Maybe. Maybe not. Current and future crop of Canucks defencemen are left side defensemen. Tryamkin can play the right side and i don't think Subban is gonna make it- even if he does, he will be a Troy Stecher at best. now, Stecher is a great kid, but his style is up-tempo puck-handling guy. Not big behemoth that flattens people, can breakout and hammer slappers/wristers at the net. Guddy is our guy for that-sort of (except the breakout or the hammer slapper part). but beyond Tanev, Guddy and Stecher, our right side needs help. If either Tanev or Guddy fade in the next 3-4 years, that would be a spot of opportunity for tryamkin.

Yea, but some people would rather spend the hundreds of hours extra traveling, doing something else. thats what i am saying, is Vancouver's drawback. We are a more travel-oriented workspace, compared to NJD/NY teams for eg.
-
Yep, but our snag, is the comfort of profession: we lose out to the east coast US franchises, where travel is a lot easier to deal with. Different perks, i suppose.

2017 NHL Draft - Chicago, Illinois June 23-24 2017

Would be awesome if Nicolas Hague fell to us in R2. Potential Tryamkin replacement. He's ranked 28th in the draft and has been suspended by the OHL for overly-aggressive play but is a behemoth defenceman with good mobility, but not good puck carry. Another prized prospect for R2 would be Ryan Poheling who is one of the most 'NHL-ready' players in this draft and a potential 2LW/3LW. -
1. We don't need to expose Granny. 2. Given a choice between a guy who potted almost 20 goals this year (most likely reason he didnt is because his season got cut short), who is defensively sound, a bit of a puck-hound and though below average for a C, way good for a Winger at the face-off and a guy who has <5 goals after 50+ games in the same season, every single team will pick the former. Ie, if we expose both Granny and Gaunce, if Vegas chooses a forward, it will be Granny ever single time.
