PHI is a blue collar town, and somewhere along the way the team lost that. I think the fanbase yearns for that hardworking, hardnosed play from their team. Torts was brought in to shake things up. There’s going to be a lot of tough love at first but that’s how he rolls. Either youre on board with him as a team or youre not. I think PHI will love him.

Torts has already said he loves him. DeAngelo brings a lot of passion and thats what Torts wants.

[Signing] Canucks re-sign J.T. Miller

I think for this season at least see how things play out under Boudreau. Burroughs/Poolman/McDermott Im going to focus on. Perhaps mid season or next off season we see something more significant done on the back end, depending on how chips fall. -

Could happen if there’s a deal to be made, but it looks like the Canucks arnt going to (thankfully) force anything -

opportunity cost is a concern if mgmt doesnt make smart roster decisions. I suspect we will see more moves like the Dermott/Hamonic one over the course of time. Their key guys other than EP are locked up for a little while at least. Im not too worried about re-signing podz/hoagie. As long as this team/players have a good season(s), it will create opportunities to tweak things. -

Miller and OEL are the only real long term commitments that carry older age risk. The cap will be going up significantly. If the mgmt play their cards right they can still ice a competitive team with mortgaging futures. -

Maybe this team (led by their key young players/Miller) will become a strong playoff team maybe not, but I still wouldnt try to force anything to make that happen. But before you can decide anything, the first step is becoming a consistent playoff team. That’s what I want to see. And do it without bankrupting the long term -

imo Miller re-signing shouldnt change the approach at all. Keep tweaking the team. Players like Meyers, Pearson, Dickinson, potentially Boeser will probably change teams in due time. Hoagie/Podz are here to stay though. IMO Canucks dont need to make desperation moves. Id rather see how competitive the group can be while moving out/moving in longer term players as time goes on. The goal should be to make the playoffs every year from here on out while keeping a long term perspective. -

You know what, Im not as worried about JTM’s contract taking a nose dive. You look at Marchand/Bergeron/Ovi etc. and those guys can definitely still play but more importantly are key PP guys like Miller is. I think he will figure out how to be a contributor later into his career if you want to be optimistic about it. If he does age poorly then I guess it was a bad gamble, but Id lean on JT being a proven competitor like the guys above. The next 3 years of drafting/amateur development will be key. -

Minnesota’s is a beaut. Dont mind Dallas either. Capitals is the best logo of them all. -

I really hope someone at the media avail on Tues asks PA: “there’s a segment of the fan base that does not want to see the team sign older aged players to long term contracts, but rather focus on getting younger and keep building. If that means not being very competitive for a few years so be it. What’s tour opinion on this strategy?” -

For it to be a productive contract overall. You dont want production to drop off sharply too soon. As for evaluating players they are fair game too -

JT is the best player on this team. As long as he shows he can be a difference maker to age 35 I think the contract will be worthwhile for the team. He adds so much to the team that (if he continues to play well) is someone you want to keep. As far as cap flexibility and contract efficiency goes, I think there are other (maybe more desirable) spots on the roster you can do that. As much as I love the chaos giraffe, you could definitely give the team some different (and cheaper looks) with that cap space. Same with OEL, and I absolutely love the guy. Some other smaller contracts that will expire or you can move if need be. If JTM can prove he is worth his contract, it was probably best to keep him given his contribution to the team. I was ok with a trade for the right return but that didnt seem doable. And reflecting on it- it’s probably better to tweak the roster in different spots. That may be difficult but a good test for the new mgmt group. Im also curious whether JT’s contract now sets an internal cap within the team. -

Key thing for mgmt (once they re-sign Bo, I assume they will) is how they maximize their roster. Down the middle and in goal their set. Theyve got a #1 in QH. Getting the rest right will be the true test. Next 4-5 years will be super interesting. -

including myself. post covid and with Boudreau/new mgmt JT seemed to really lighten his mood/openly express how much he likes this team and VAN. He doesnt strike me as a $$$ only guy so he must have a lot of belief in where this team is headed -

Talking point: What is MGMT’s long term plan? In the short term I think they want to take advantage of having Hughes/Demko relatively cheap and in their prime, plus having Miller at his peak over the next 4-5 years (assuming he doesnt suddenly fall off-boy would that hurt). Accumulating/developing young cheap talent over that time could either help the team stay competitive when those contracts expire/JT ages. Or we could see them go all in on a rebuild at that point. I totally get people’s concerns about the back half of his contract, but 5 years out is ample time to plan for. -
