Bennings terrible pro scouting and player analysis
Angry Goose replied to DefCon1's topic in Canucks Talk
So far with PA we will have to see how Myrenberg develops vs Studnicka. -
Car probably didn’t wave when the truck graciously let them merge. I’d chase them down too

If you think im saying Barlow is literally a carbon copy of EP you really are out to lunch. Lots play drivers in the league with different styles of play-that should be a fairly simple point to grasp. My god some of the comments in this forum….smh
-
“Everything I described lmao” you really dont know what a play driver is then. EP is a play driver because of his ability to create turn overs, his puck pressure/puck pursuit and commitment to D zone/transitional play. A player that can tilt the ice towards the offensive zone. That is exactly the type of player of Barlow is. And you didn’t understand my reasoning about the WJCs. It’s a mere snapshot versus similarly aged competition. YOUNG athletes. It’s not data you should bet the bank on-this is common knowledge.

Oli Juolevi had 2 points in the 2017 WJC’s over Sergachev’s 1 point with an extra game played. By your logic should OJ have turned out to have had a similar impact as Sergachev? Injuries didnt ruin OJ’s career-he just didnt have the footspeed to make it. It’s about projection and for all you know Barlow’s role was different than Wood’s in thw WJCs. Points in junior doesnt always amount to NHL production, let alone points in a short tournament at a specific time in a young athletes career. As for being a “play driver” Im just describing what Ive seen, but if you dont take my word for it: What makes Barlow stand out for me is his willingness to play defense. He says that playing defense is his first priority over scoring. That’s saying something for a 46-goal scorer. But he backs up his words with his play. The first thing I notice about Barlow is his commitment to forcing turnovers. He has no issue pressuring his man into a mistake. He doesn’t cheat up the ice. But once his team has possession, he can turn up ice and create dangerous opportunities quickly. Then when the situation calls for it, he is not afraid to sacrifice his body to block a shot. In a 5-1 win for his team early in the season, he stepped in front of a shot that went off his ankle that clearly hobbled him. The willingness to make that play even with the game decided showed me how committed he is to his own end. source Yeah, what “I’m describing” isnt a play driver. After the top 8 or so, mock drafts are all over the place. Some people like Craig Button have Barlow rated higher than Wood, others dont. Ive already said that although I lean towards Barlow over Wood, I would be OK w/ Wood if the Canucks amateur staff believes in the kid. Id also be very happy w ASP and Wallinder. If youre firm on Wood-great.

kind of a silly take. if you know some excels in their job, why you interview unknowns? PA/JR obviously knew Tocchett and by all accounts he looks like an excellent hire. And Tocchett being the fitness guy that he is, may have pushed for Trinca as well. I think this is less about “saving time and money” versus going w people you know and are confident in.
-
Good defenders have to be great athletes imo. Hockey sense obviously matters too. Wood (right now) reminds me too much of Boeser. He is not very agile/quick. That is something he will have to work very hard at to overcome. Not saying he cant, and he is only 17, but he is 100% the type of player Id want my scouting staff to know inside and out, on and off the ice.
-
Barlow isnt a play driver? That’s a vague definition you rely on. He forechecks very hard, can get to areas along the wall very quickly. He takes a ton of pride in his D zone play. He is essentially a very Tocchett like player. Like Wood, with a good development staff working with him he is going to be a player you absolutely want on your team. It’s funny tho how you compared Juolevi/Sergachev/McAvoy-Olli J being the far worst skater at the time. Probably not the best analogy to rely on lol. Its all about projection and risk. I know mentally and athletically what you are getting with Barlow. I love the traits he has. With Wood (imo) there is far more risk, but that also comes w incredible upside if he hits.
-
That being said, if Canuck scouts have a very good read on this kid and believe in him, Id have no issues if they selected Wood as well
-
Barlow has peaked? What? He’s 18 years old And FTR I would pick Barlow over Wood. While Wood has some very desirable traits, he has some real issues to overcome as well. His D zone play is not something he takes a lot of pride in, unlike Barlow. Barlow is captain of his team for a reason. Kid has the mental fortitude to become a solid NHL’r

Who here is actually happy with the Hronek trade?
Angry Goose replied to Odd.'s topic in Canucks Talk
Hoping similarly w JT Miller, Hronek comes in w a something-to-prove attitude -
Dang, Craig’s list seems to line up w some of the players I really liked (ASP, Barlow, Wallinder) and the ones I wasnt super high on (Wood, Benson, Yager). Wallinder jumping into the top 10 is the biggest surprise. I wondered if he was too high of a pick at #11 but he really is a solid all around defender w good mobility. I hadn’t watched much Reinbacher bc consensus was he would be going early but #24….CB bringin’ the heat Ive been hearing some hype on Dmitri Simashev as well. He’d be a nice pick up in the 2nd round if the Canucks could obtain a pick. Good skater. Good offensive instincts. Reminds me of a young OEL tbh

Ive been trying to take as much scouting takes on this year’s draft and its pretty wild how wide open it is after: Bedard, Fantilli, Carlsson, Smith Michkov, Reinbacher, Leonard I think will go next in whatever order. After that Ive seen ALOT of variance Really curious who the Canucks amateur staff have keyed in on

[discussion] cap clearing trade with Chicago?
Angry Goose replied to Ted Lasso's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
They would probably want mentor like players. A guy like Jason Zucker might be appealing having played with Sidney/Malkin. He would be a good sounding board for Bedard + help do the dirty work on a line w him. -
there are definitely guys im interested who could fall to the mid 1st round - Barlow, ASP and guys like Tom Wallinder who should be available between 12-15. Having TW and D-Petey in the system would be very nice, especially if the Canucks want to keep Hughes a Canuck for the long term. Otherwise ASP just seems like a perfect player to have in the system.
-
I was watching a scouting vid on Michkov and apparently he pretty much just floats in the D zone. Super talented yes, but soft af in the d zone. Im not really a fan of that.
-
If Leonard or Dvorsky drop Im interested. I dont know why but Im so hesitant about Benson. Im not apples to apples comparing him to Garland but CG was an elite point producer in junior, high work rate etc. People speak so highly of ZB so I should really dive into more tape on him and he’s a BC boy. You know, I have Barlow rated higher than Wood and Moore. He reminds me of Matthew Tkachuk in the good ways/not the rat ways. Is a physical/nasty kind of player. Plus he has a 2 way game that he is absolutely committed to and captains his team. Really good traits. He’s a guy that if say ARZ of BUF wanted to move up to say grab Wood etc. and the Canucks theoretically had ASP or Barlow still available, Id be stoked. Heck if the Canucks were to move back a bit, gain a good asset and draft Wallinder, and lets say Simachev is still available in the 2nd round-lord have mercy
-
I think Barlow fits that bill. I like him a lot too. He has a nasty swagger to him that this team needs more of for sure
-
Yeah I think you need to do it every now and then. Hughes will be elite for a long time, but at that point he will be 28ish and likely looking for an 8r in his next contract. Plus that ASP kid is literally Swedish Hughes, although I think Quinn has more tenacity in his game. Interesting to see what ends up happening
-
The way Im looking at it s/ ASP is that if he hits his ceiling, you could move Hughes for an absolute haul towards the end of his contract. Hate to get all GMy but it would be shrewd move in the longterm.
