[Rumour] Canucks getting calls on Conor Garland
Junkyard Dog replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Schenn close to signing in Toronto. We should target Sissons as 3rd C. Predators looking for some scoring help and have cap and he brings grit, size, faceoff, defensive ability. Righty C Most importantly he comes in at a cheaper cap hit for 3 seasons. Probably have to offer Preds a good hockey trade as they have options if the offer doesn’t suffice. Hence why I would probably offer Garland or Boeser straight up. The cap savings alone are an asset that we can use to further address the defence having already saved cap from this deal. I -
Forgot about Sissons. Predators also looking for scoring. Pretty much same age(1 year younger), bigger but scores less. Big stand out is his cap hit which is more friendly. Could probably swing Garland and still save a little over 2M. Boeser would give us just under 4M. I prefer him as a target. Nice call.

He’s a bit bigger than that. On our current team he’d be 3rd in hits with 175 hits and he’d be our best faceoff man while providing some good secondary scoring. He’s been a pretty consistent player throughout his career which makes me feel that he’s capable of playing a good 31, 32 and 33 year old seasons. Not any players in free agency better than him for what he brings. Maybe trade-wise like Scott Laughton who’s a bit younger but he’s coming off a career year and is on a rebuilding team that will want assets.

Vancouver trades Brock Boeser 6.65M x 2 years. New York Islanders trades Jean-Gabriel Pageau 5M x 3 years. 2023 4th round pick. Why does the Vancouver Canucks do this? They trade from a winger surplus to gain a spot needed. Pageau is an elite defensive top 9 right shot C who despite 68.7% even-strength D-zone starts scored 40 points on a defensive team. He has been a consistent 55%+ faceoff Center, secondary scoring producer and fills a significant void both at C and on the PK. He also plays physically, having 170+ hits in each of the past two seasons. Canucks also gain 1.65M in cap next year in the process. Why does the New York Islanders do this? They trade from a centre surplus in order to gain aid needed at wing. Although they gain a bit of cap they get a bit more younger and help offensively they need in the top 6 wings. This trade would give us over 8M in cap which would help us try to retool the D-core even more so with us having acquired cap while getting a pretty good 3rd C.

[Buyout] Oliver Ekman-Larsson

I am making these expectations based off the sacrifices. I assume they will fill some spots with the cap created regardless. The sacrifices they have made warrant nothing more than making the playoffs next season. They look really bad if they don’t next year and will be given no exception or excuse given what they’ve tried to achieve. If they don’t then yeah I’ll be disappointed given the circumstances. They are rushing the direction of the team to the point where results need to be achieved sooner. -

That is indeed a good question but I think they try and find a cheaper veteran replacement for OEL, even if on the short term to help the team now and to be a contingency if those guys are not ready or are good enough. -

A good presumption but that can be proven wrong if he does bounce back next year. Time will tell. -

If anything the off-season will be more interesting. -

In this thread’s poll, which has been voted on by nearly 100 members/fans here, over 90% were in favour of waiting it out. Nearly complete agreement from both sides that are for/against the direction of the team from members here. It should be interesting to see how fan reaction on a broader scale will pan out. -

I don’t see why I would. They wouldn’t make all these sacrifices if they didn’t want to make the playoffs next year. Whether or not they will I don’t know, but if they don’t it will be unacceptable to me given what they’ve given up to try to improve the team and compete in the short term. -

As will contract demands and prices of players. There is a reason a lot of quality players are signing for short term deals. -

With the sacrifices they have made my expectations are for them to make the playoffs next year. There are no exceptions or excuses anymore. If they don’t then the sacrifices were all for nothing which is unacceptable. -

I prefer seeing if he bounces back next year then reevaluating a buyout as an option. -

Pearson would be gone as well. Boeser would have one year left and be easier to move if need be as well without us getting fleeced by being up against the cap. Could have had a bounce back year in the meantime too. Garland would also be easier having a year less if need be. There would definitely be better options than what we had going into this buyout. -
Cap… Wait it out a year or pay a price to make space?

I would have ridden out next year when other guys expire, when cap goes up and seeing whether OEL bounces back then reevaluating our cap situation as well as buying out OEL personally. -

As it turns out, they are willing to make sacrifices for the short term gain. -

Looks like they end up willing to take on long term sacrifice for short term gain. They better make the playoffs next year. -
Too early to tell. DET could nail both picks and Hornet could revert back to his old self and this trade could look really bad. Vise versa. Both teams could come out on top or neither could. We won’t know the final results of this trade for years.
