[Waivers] 25 players - Oct. 02, 2021
Junkyard Dog replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I would take a flyer on Fluery. Worst case scenario we waive him. Soon to be 23 year old RD with a bit of bite to his game. Has some experience at the NHL level. Might be worth a look. -
If Hamonic comes back though you have a veteran guy on the 3rd pair and can play them a bit more 5v5 lessening the load of the top 4 guys. I hope whatever he’s going through can get resolved in the best way for him and he can come back to playing. We need him back.
-
We’re probably gonna play our top four 45+ minutes a game. I don’t expect that 3rd pair to see much ice together 5v5. Hopefully Hamonic does come back. It would allow Myers to play with one of the youngsters.

You’re still not taking Into account the players we’ve iced and whether or not they’ve can play well at the NHL level and with the systems though. The entirety of preseason is to determine that and last game proved that some of them don’t belong. Last game there was a lot more scrubby mistakes, by players who aren’t NHL regulars facing a more suited NHL lineup. Players looked lost. Even Miller admitted that they weren’t use to each other on the PP. I saw Dickensen on multiple occasions loudly/firmly direct teammates during play. The gap in talent on both rosters was the difference in last nights game. The last 10 minutes proved that. A lot of players looked like amateurs. That’s more of the players than anything. We weren’t an NHL team last night. More than half of our regulars were out, including our best players. You say we have a better more skilled team but we’ve yet to see them altogether. Fact of the matter is we haven’t seen how our actual NHL lineup plays(facing another NHL lineup)with the systems in place or even together at all. So we can’t really a grip of how they work, or what changes might have been made and how the players play as a group. Overall I feel like your judgements are a little premature. You’re correct in saying our AHLers/Depth guys/young players and don’t play the way the systems well and how we want to see as a group vs a better group of talent than them if that was the point your making. My point is that we were so bad due to a talent gap and these sort of depth players/AHLers not looking like they belong that it is almost impossible to gauge how the systems are due to a lack of NHL talent playing within those systems facing other NHL talent. I don’t like Baumer either for that matter. Nevertheless I see where we differ in opinion, in the way we have viewed the games that have been played. You fault the systems more so than the lack of talent and I see the lack of talent and individual play more so at the forefront of our problems during those games. Our difference in opinion there doesn’t look like it will change much. Agree to disagree I suppose. -

I don’t see how that’s the case or common sense at all. You stated you’re disappointed with the systems we play when we’ve played 3 games. 2 of which we had the much more worse lineup and the other we had the better lineup. You need to explain and elaborate how you can determine that these are the exact same systems with the players we have out there. You need to explain why the how you can tell that with the difference in talent we’ve seen with the teams we faced. I don’t understand how you can make the judgment so quickly and be be disappointed if the systems we play when we haven’t seen an NHL lineup face another NHL lineup with these supposed systems. That to me seems like the best way to concretely determine how the systems are, when there’s a level playing feel and no handicap to either team due to talent differences in the lineups. Rather than me continuing questioning your reasoning perhaps you can explain your reasoning a bit more precisely. I’d rather understand your POV than go in circles like this. -

We haven't really experimented in the way I meant though, with a full lineup. With our top 3 down the middle being Petey/Horvat/Miller. With Boeser/Petey and Pearson/Horvat as mainstays with wingers like Hog/Garland left over it could be tried. If we gave Miller Hoglander, who he had chemistry with last year, for example how would teams matchup against our lines 5v5? Would they have to play one of their bottom 6 vs Miller's line? Would that benefit the team in hole? We'd have Garland leftover who could play with anybody. -

Probably will see a decent amount of cuts the next few days. Maybe one more opportunity for some guys next game. We should be icing a more complete lineup IMO. Need to start trying different line combinations with the regulars, especially if we're gonna consider at Miller at C. -

Coaches are judging what players are good enough to play moving forward. Well you're likely going to see cuts over the course of preseason. I responded to the fact that you said that you're disappointed to see very little change in the systems we play. That doesn't make sense to me because we talent differences are making it difficult to credibly see how the systems we play have changed. So how does that work? How can you rationally make those sort of judgements? Personally I will judge and criticize how we play based off more circumstantial evidence. It seems to me like you're putting yourself at a handicap with your judgements. -

And you find you can make a credible opinion/judgements of the systems we play based off AHL-type lineup facing and NHL-type lineup rather than an NHL-lineup facing another NHL-lineup? I just don't see the rational in that personally. You're completely disregarding the aspect of talent in the NHL and the difference it makes. -

It wasn't a great game but we had a weaker lineup. Hunt didn't play great but he wasn't terrible. Rathbone was the same. Burroughs was better than them both tonight and Schenn was the worst D tonight. Myer was the best D which isn't surprising as he was the only NHL regular and OJ was the 2nd best. OJ/Myers saw a lot of PK time as Flames kept racking consecutive PPs. They had like 6 PPs and OJ was not scored on any of them when he was on. The only goal they score was an empty net PP late in the 3rd with Myers and I think Hunt/Burroughs out because we tried pulling the goalie on the PK. Not many positives. -

It makes a huge difference who's in and out of the lineup. If you play a mostly NHL team vs a mostly AHL it won't matter what systems you play, talent will trump that every day. How are you gonna manage to make any sort of credible judgment based off a lack of substantial evidence? I 'd rather till I see how we play with an NHL lineup vs another NHL lineup and then judge the team because the last 2 of 3 preseason games we put our AHL/depth guys out vs fuller lineups vs Seattle and the Flames and the other game vs Flames we had a the more fuller lineup. -

Keeper got injured in camp and just had surgery. He broke his leg. If you watched today's game OJ was one of the few good standouts, even over Rathbone. -

Garland stayed in the game. So more likely a rough dinger. -

Most of that lineup was AHL guys/depth players/young players vs most of the Flames NHL lineup. I wouldn't put too much flak into it until we see our NHL team play. Can't make clear cut judgements based off the evidence we have from that game. -

This was a good game to see how our #6-8 defenseman will play vs NHL talent. One game but a good benchmark for these players themselves too. Now they can see the tape and see where they can improve. -

I have said this since game 1. They haven't meshed well 5v5. I'd start playing both OJ/Rathbone with Myers full-time these next few games and see how it goes. OJ is already with Myers on the PK and sometimes when we've needed offense Rathbone has been out there with Myers. -

I'd either start Pod at the bottom 6 like we did Horvat or in the AHL. He has only shown glimpses and looks like he needs some more adjusting before we see improvements. -

OJ had a good, not great game. Rathbone was -3 tonight. Probably his worst game. Hunt was up and down all game. Either looked good or really bad. Myers was the best D overall but he is also the only regular NHL guy playing so not surprising. Burroughs was average. Probably better than Schenn or Hunt tonight. Schenn hasn't showed anything good all preseason. -

Ever since the 10 minute mark of the 3rd the Flames have had the puck on a string. -
