Any line that'd have Virtanen and Guad together would be a weakness other teams would always try to exploit defensively in a series. Our team relies on match ups to win a lot. Hence why the home record is so much better. At home play Guad/Virtanen together, when we're away split them a part and have a more spread out top 9. This messes with their match up plans when we play them away. Home Miller-Petey-Boeser Pearson-Horvat-Toffoli Roussel-Gaud-Virtanen Motte-Beagle-Sutter Mac Away Miller-Petey-Virtanen Roussel-Horvat-Toffoli Pearson-Gaud-Boeser Motte-Beagle-Sutter Mac If Leivo/Ferland healthy substitute Roussel with them.

Offensively yeah. But I am talking about being sheltered for their lack of defensive play which Virtanen/Gaud were. My point was it is not a good idea to place a rookie with 2 guys still in the process of rounding out their games. Lets let them round out their games so we don't have to worry about sheltering an entire line cause Virtanen/Gaud at that point would be better defensive players and good enough to handle more responsibility than they currently do. As it stands now they are strictly secondary scorers. -
Would definitely be the most ideal of situations if we can re-sign everyone and have enough to add a solid top 6 D. A top 6 with Boeser/Toffoli and a Dillion/Edmundson in the top 6 to play with a Tryamkin? That's mouth drooling to think about. I for sure want to see us improve and take another step forward next year if possible.

TBD though with what happens.
-
That's to be determined on what happens with compliance buyouts and/or JB's ability to ship out dead contracts. A lot of what we're arguing about hinges on it. We could get a couple buyouts then we can re-sign everyone and sign a D. We could not get anything and not ship out everyone and lose out on two of Tanev, Toffoli and Marky. So we will see what happens eventually.
-
Even a better idea.... why don't we use the money to re-sign Markstrom and try to add a defenseman?
-
Nevertheless he's more inexperienced that Marky was when we got Miller. Also how long did it take Marky to become a great starter after years of being a backup? Not until his third year as a starter. This is Demko's 1st year as a backup, he's a ways away from being a starter. We lose Marky next year we probably aren't a playoff team. Demko and whom'ever we'd sign won't be nearly as good enough to carry us.

All you got to ask is where are are those people who were standing against the Chinese government's methods of initially treating and gaslighting this pandemic. You know those Chinese people that disappeared shortly after questioning their own government. Corrupt nation. Even has their fingers in the WHO. I feel for the the Chinese peoples, they deserve so much better.

They should do an alternative stick jersey with the Blue white and red. Would look nice.

How will the NHL treat conditional trades in the 2020 draft
Junkyard Dog replied to Ray_Cathode's topic in Canucks Talk
If we falter and trade an Edler(if he's willing) and Pearson would be a great silver lining and contingency. It's either that or we probably make the playoffs. If Pearson has another year like this one he garners a late 1st or a couple early picks(2nd,3rds,4ths). We trade both of them then yeah we are getting a pretty decent return. Would give us a few more extra picks which we could save and draft or use to move up to acquire a top 5 pick if we fell out or in a move to acquire a solid young dman. It gives us options. In a perfect world if we falter we trade Edler/Pearson and then re-sign them in the off-season. That should be the game plan if we falter. -
I would much rather give up this pick than next years. Some solid Dmen next year if we falter.

How will the NHL treat conditional trades in the 2020 draft
Junkyard Dog replied to Ray_Cathode's topic in Canucks Talk
Next year is gonna be a year of Dmen. Among all the D in 2021 Jack and Quinn's brother Luke Hughes projects as a top 10 pick, some have him top 5. Some people have 4 D in the top 7 with Clarke and Lambos. Early projections though. So yeah if we can we should want to give up this years pick if it was non-lotto. -
I think Leivo's the odd man out if Toffoli is re-signed. He just isn't better than Motte/Mac in a 4th line role. He could be signed as an extra though.
-
A bit of the Mac treatment? I am fine with giving him a little taste of what to expect. He shouldn't be a regular till Gaud/Jake round out their games. Could take another year or two which is okay, Hog should probably spend a little bit of time in the AHL.

[Signing] Canucks sign Nils Hoglander
Junkyard Dog replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
He wasn't put in a position to develop that way since he was on a sheltered line so I don't see it going to night and day like that. It's gonna be a process and throwing Hog onto that line will just make it more of a sheltered line and prolong the process. -

Jake's D game is on the bottom echelon of all our forwards, like Gaudette. Otherwise he'd be used on the PK and defensively. He's better than Gaudette but not by a tremendous amount, Virtanen still has a ways to go. My worry is more on Gaudette since his D-game determines whether or not he's our 3rd C or a winger. Reason that line was together is because Jake and Gaud have some offensive chemistry, offense died on the better players sticks and TG liked using that line as a filler/secondary offensive line. TG liked rolling with Eriksson on the second line to make it more defensive and put all the other better defensive forwards on the 4th line. Nevertheless he should have eased both players into taking up more defensive responsibility at the start of the year. The biggest drawback of having Gaud/Jake and all the good defensive players together is that we rely too much on match ups to win. Which is why our road record is such garbage. If Jake was with Horvat all year till Toffoli/Boeser was healthy he'd be a much better defensive player because he'd have that experience playing against top competition in a shut down role. Instead he was on a sheltered line most of the year and wasn't given much opportunity to improve in that regard. Eriksson isn't gonna improve while Jake is capable so that was a mistake. On the flip side Gaud needs defensive players in order to get more defensive responsibility 5v5. If we want to be a good team Gaud's line need to take up more responsibility, we aren't gonna succeed having any sheltered lines. We need them to grow so that when we bring up a Hog/Pod/Lind/etc we don't need to worry about sheltering them. We're a year or two away from that. -

How was that line not sheltered? They are still two players still rounding out their games. Playing with Roussel who is far from our best defensive forward and isn't used in that regard. When together they had to play in the offensive zone or get exploited defensively. Neither of them were ever used defensively or played any roles on the PK. They were strictly secondary scorers. They don't even play against strong competition besides Virtanen in his brief stint with Petey/Miller which was an offensive line. And you want to throw out another rookie with two players still rounding out their games? We need Gaudette's line to become more like Bo's that can be relied on at both ends not less like it. Ideally you probably want to split them up in order to use them more defensively but if we re-sign Toffoli that's doubtful unless we throw Boeser on the 3rd line so Jake can get that experience with Horvat and so both players aren't trying to round out their games on the same line. -
I am not anti-Demko if it feels I am coming across as that. I just think it'll take time which is fine. Given the fact that Marky and the team are better than Ryan Miller when we signed him Demko is in a better environment than Marky was. Demko is not gonna be good his first few years as a starter if we just throw him in. It's a learning curve. Marky we threw into the wolves and it took until his 3rd year as a starter, this year, to become a great starter. Miller definitely helped Marky but Miller never played at an elite level and the team wasn't good. The succession I see is it gradually being split 50/50 as Marky gets older. I am talking 3-4 years from now. Giving us a solid tandem down the line, akin to Schneider/Luongo, for a short time till we need to move on from Marky. By Demmer will be in his late 20s and hopefully ready to become a great starter and we will have a new goalie that would succeed him eventually(DiPeitro?) I think we make a side deal with Seattle to keep both goalies. The goal is to always have a master and an apprentice. A healthy goalie cycle and we have a chance to create that after a weird 2013-18 of goalies(Luongo/Lack/Nilsson/Miller). It'll be good to have some consistency and solidity between the pipes as we're getting good.

[Signing] Canucks sign Nils Hoglander

I don't agree. He was sheltered with Gaud and wasn't used at all defensively. That's a big difference. Need a year with him and Gaud taking some PK duties and match up roles which he's yet to do. -

Nah bro let him marinate while Gaud and Jake improve their two way game next year. Lets not have one of the most sheltered 3rd lines in the league. Don't want to rely on Bo so much defensively when his line is at their best playing in both ends. -
He's not making that big of a jump next year. Marky is playing at an elite level and Demko wasn't. Demko was playing as expected. A young back up. If you think he can compete for a starting spot next year you're setting a bar too high for him to reach.

I don't think he replaces Tanev at all, at least not right away. His ceiling could be a solid top 6 D for all we know. He really is a wildcard in how good he'll be. People can assume but nobody will know till we all see him play. It would be dangerous to have him replace Tanev next year. It could really backfire and stall any sort of uptrend so we should probably try to keep Tanev if we want to be good. I doubt LA turns it around faster than we move up or become as good as us in the next few years. Some over the top, unrealistic what ifs would need to happen like you mentioned. Realistically by the time they're good Toffoli will be closer to his mid 30s. Could just sign with us than go back to LA to end his career. Might be what happens. Age of team isn't really the same when you go in depth with it. All their core players are a whole lot older than ours while our role players are older than theirs. They're going through the process of acquiring project type players like any rebuilding team does hence why they got a lot of 25/26 year old players. Kempe is their only player under 25 with over 30 points while we have six, 5 of which are 23 and younger. That's a huge different in where our teams are at. All depends on if he values success which players do. He isn't gonna get that in LA, he will here. Vancouver is a pretty good option since it's in the Pacific too which is a huge bonus for him personally. If you're gonna sign with a team than stay in the division with Vancouver close to LA where he can play playoff hockey and his wife can be close to home. Makes good sense really.
