  1. The Sedins + Naslund's old SHL team, MODO Hockey, got promoted from the HockeyAllvensken to the SHL!

      Congratz to MODO.

  2. Connor Bedard is the only Canucks fan loving this start to the season right now.

  3. Man, watching that Brandon Sutter interview with Murph was tough. He was having trouble breathing during it. I cannot see a way Sutter returns to the NHL. Really heartbreaking. Long Covid is no joke.

What are you guys on about?

Go watch some of his old interviews. He always stutter and takes huge breath after long sentences.

I got the impression he was just choked up, but it was for sure hard to watch.

Yeah, I don't think he was having trouble breathing, but just sighing a lot. Either way, it's clearly been a really tough year or so for him.

  4. I'll never be dehydrated again after drinking all of these Oilers fan tears!

McDavid looked very unhappy after the 6-0 drubbing at the hands of Florida. Didn't go full Draisaitl, but don't know how much more of this he will endure before he asks for a trade. Seems like a New York kind guy to me.

Honestly it would absolutely suck to be an Oilers fan. It’s like a dangling fruit that you just can’t reach. Best player in the world and they just can’t build around him. It’s quite amazing actually

  5. Every Boudreau interview is a gem and I, for one, am stoked we have a coach who isn't combative with the media and seems willing to go on any podcast he can/make cameos/whatever. Super refreshing.

Boudreau's interview on Ray Ferraro & Darren Dreger's podcast is great. Worth listening too!

I’ll give him a bit. I think the media wears on a guy especially in Canada. I am in a agreement with your statement though. I’m always interested to hear what he says. It’s always fresh

  8. New Montreal Canadiens signee Arber Xhekaj is now on the all time names list and if he makes the NHL, he'll be the first player with a last name that starts with an X.

I looked it up and he actually would be. No NHL player since its inception in 1917 has ever had a surname beginning with X.

  9. Arizona has a pretty good plan in place right now for the first time in forever. Tank for Connor Bedard and Shane Wright and use them to coax Auston Matthews to leave the Maple Leafs and play in the desert. Hometown superstar coming home to save the franchise that introduced him to hockey is a good plan for a franchise facing yet another rebuild after accomplishing nothing for the past decade.

Sure it’s a great plan if the end goal in to relocate the club.  Just move them to Quebec, where people love hockey, and they will have fans.

    3. Ghostsof1915

      Ghostsof1915

Because as we've seen in Edmonton, Toronto and Buffalo that tanking works so well....

    4. morrissex95

      morrissex95

Detroit doesn't need Bedard or Wright. They'll draft someone who is just as good that fits in there core, likely a European player that isn't on anyone's radar. Look at what Yzerman did in Tampa, nabbing guys like Point and Kucherov out of the first round. Arizona needs a superstar, they thought they were getting one in Strome and they had to salvage what was left of the asset and got Schmaltz for him. Schmaltz turned out to a far superior player on a great contract, so I think if Arizona wants to go scorched Earth then they can.

For next years' draft, I say Wright goes Arizona, Seattle picks second, Columbus at third, Buffalo at fourth and Nashville at fifth. We'll keep our pick, which you'd have to hope would be in the late teens of the first. If they trade our first, I'll hit the roof. I don't see Matthews signing in Arizona when his contract expires, I think he'll stay in Toronto under an even more grossly-overpaid contract. Matthews hasn't won anything and he's not the best player in the world, I'd say he should be getting $9M instead of $11.6M. By the time Matthews is a UFA, Arizona will either be in Houston or they'll be one of the best young teams in the league or BOTH.

  10. So apparently PK Subban had Jerry Bruckheimer, co-owner of the Kraken, on his podcast a few months ago. He's also got 1 year left on his 9 million a year deal. I won't be shocked if the Kraken pick Subban. He's a recognizable hockey star and the Kraken do need to hit the cap floor. Won't be shocked if Subban is a member of the Kraken.

  11. Is Tampa Bay the new Boston?!? Two Stanley Cups, 1 Super Bowl, and a World Series appearance for the city in the last 18 months. Insanity.

Trevor Linden for Todd Bertuzzi (who we used later to get Roberto Luongo), Bryan McCabe (who we used to get one of the Sedins) and a draft pick (who we used to select Jarkku Ruutu (sp?)) is a pretty good 2nd place.

  15. Come on Benning, Cernak is right there! Be the one who changes things! Offer sheet him! Cernak for a 2nd because of an offer sheet would be a steal! Do it!

  16. With Ferland having left the bubble and having no plans to return, does this mean a guy like Kole Lind (who was the last forward cut, if I'm not mistaken) get called into the bubble?!?

    2. Patel Bure

      Patel Bure

I think so, but MacEwen is still ahead of Lind on the depth chart.  I know that this isn’t what you were implying but I thought I’d mention it anyways.

    3. -AJ-

      -AJ-

Indeed, MacEwen would still draw in first.

  17. I feel like Canuck luck dictates one of the two things happening:

We win the Stanley Cup in a "non legit way" (aka this bubble hockey thing) or we win the first overall pick, again, in a very controversial way (second lottery).

Will either these things happen? Probably not but would be funny if either of these outcomes DID happen this year.

    1. Where's Wellwood

      Where's Wellwood

No, Canucks luck is we just wouldn't win the lottery.

The Canucks didn't even win the 1st overall pick when they had a 50% chance.

  18. At the press conference today, Jim Benning said he's got a list of 7 young guys who he "conservatively" believes will be part of the Canucks in the next 2-3 years. Who do you think they are? My gut says he's talking about: Dipeitro, Podz, Hoglander, Lind, MacEwen, Rafferty, and Juolevi. If MacEwen doesn't count, swap him out for Aidan McDonagh. Woo and Lockwood are honorable mentions.

    1. Ossi Vaananen

      Ossi Vaananen

Ya, i was scratching my head a bit at his comment. It's quite optimistic, and changing out that much of the roster seems significant especially if we're trying to be competitive and adding in rookies. He was also talking about that in reference to Madden, so was he referring to 7 forwards? there's no way. But if I were to take a stab:

      F:

      Lind

      Podz

      Hogs

      D:

      Juolevi

      Rafferty

      Rathbone

      G:

      Dipietro

Makes the Madden loss a bit more palatable, which is probably why he said it.

    2. Quantum

      Quantum

Forgot about Rathbone! Yeah, Rathbone jumps over MacEwen, McDonagh, and Woo.

And yeah, it definitely makes losing Madden palatable. I think it's easy to forget how deep this prospect pool really is.

I wonder if the NBA will go the way of the NHL and retire Kobe's #24 league wide after this tragedy.

  20. This might be one of my favourite Canucks related tweets in some time. Laughed out loud hard at this one.

  21. Had a thought -- should Gino Odjick be added to the Ring of Honour? He's such a celebrated figure in Canucks lore and it seems kind of odd that he's not there. I know he didn't set any records but you can't deny that he was a fan favorite during his time with the Canucks. If given the choice, would you put Gino in the RoH? Why or why not?!?

  22. Jake Virtanen has more goals this season than — Tyler Seguin, Jeff Skinner, Johnny Gaudreau, Alex Debrincat, Jamie Ben, Phil Kessel, and Nicklas Backstrom. Virtanen is quietly having a great season.

Not so quietly recently. He's been driving play, moving his feet and shooting from better angles.

I still hope he ups his physicality but Id be fine if he reserves that for the playoffs

Hes slowly turning into the player that Benning was betting on when he drafted him.  If Jake turns this into a consistent effort, we may not have to do too much shopping over the next 2 years, as we will have all the talent we need.  Especially with Podkolzin and Hoglander knocking on the door.

  23. LOL -- The Penguins are already looking to get rid of Gudbranson. Meanwhile, Pearson has had a strong resurgence in Vancouver. This trade keeps getting better and better.

McCann is a new Grabner. I don't think he was ever going to thrive in Vancouver. He needed to be traded by not 1, but 2 teams to get his ass in gear. Oddly enough, Grabner also had to pass through Florida and Vancouver before establishing himself.

Yes, it would have been nice if McCann could have blossomed in Vancouver but I feel like it just wasn't meant to be and we need to move on.

Like I said, McCann is just Grabner 2.0....

    4. Dazzle

@oldnews We'll probably never agree on Gudbranson, but honestly, he wasn't the right fit. You can pull all the stats (fancy or otherwise) to try and support your case. Yet you can see what he did and didn't do on the ice. On the radio after the trade, he admitted he didn't play as well as he would've wanted.

That kind of accountability makes Gudbranson a solid guy. I hope he plays well, wherever he plays. I am not a Gudbranson hater. I never was.
