  1. TNT, where the NHL has a deal, is based in Atlanta. Atlanta could use a team. That said, I think it would be smarter for the NHL to put a team in Austin, Texas before going back to Atlanta. Austin is the fastest growing city in the US and there's no major sports team there besides a MLS team... would be a great way to add another NHL team in Texas without having to deal with the competition in Houston. Seems like the Coyotes moving to Atlanta may be on the table.
  2. I suspect that they're shutting down Demko for the year. Management is clearly looking to tank. They gave Bednard an AHL deal because they're down to three goalies and need a backup. I doubt they trade for or get a goalie. I could see the Canucks maybe being in on an NCAA goalie if there's one that's being hyped up from this season. The three rumored "hyped" NCAA goalies from this year's free agent class are Ian Shane from Cornell, Ludwig Persson from Miami-Ohio, and Ryan Bischel from Notre Dame. Ian's the best of the three and the youngest, he's the one I'd like to see the Canucks sign. The knock on Ian Shane is that he's 6'0" which is short for a goalie. Ludwig hasn't been very good but that might be more of a reflection on the fact that he's been playing on a terrible University of Miami (Ohio) team. Bischel is slightly older (23) but he's been good on a so/so Notre Dame team.
  3. This is one of the worst hires that the NHLPA could have made. He's going to screw NHL players more than they already have. Jeremy Jacobs is a big fan of this guy. He made huge donations to Walsh's political campaigns in the past. Jacobs is the owner of the Bruins and is apparently the defacto "head" of the NHL owners when they come together to negotiate anything. Walsh and Jacobs are buddies. This is going to blow up on the NHLPA in a big way. They needed someone who would fight for them, not bow to the knee of the owners when negotiations get tough.
  4. If they trade him to Buffalo, it means that they'll be getting one of Devon Levi or Erik Portillo back as the "goalie of the future". It seems like a dumb move to trade Demko. I don't really get why he's in trade rumors right now.
  5. Interesting to see him getting a contract extension only a few months after being claimed off waivers. Good for Valimaki.
  6. I suspect that if this report is true, the Sabres are going to trade Portillo's rights by the deadline. There will be teams calling and I wouldn't be shocked if the Canucks are one of those teams. Portillo's an intriguing NCAA prospect but I can see why he Portillo doesn't see a future in Buffalo, as they have Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen about to take a big step with them and they have Devon Levi who is clearly the top goalie prospect in the Sabres organization. It will be interesting to see if Portillo, once his rights are traded, decides to sign with the team that traded for his rights or if they pulls a Vesey and signs with a different team after the fact in the summer.
  7. I get why they picked Vegas but Vancouver would've been cool to see in this match up. When is the last time the Canucks participated in a Winter Classic? Was it the year of the Luongo/Torts debacle? Regardless, I'll probably go and watch it next year.
  8. The Michigan is a fun goal to watch. Players who pull it off seem to be having fun. The game needs more excitement and players showing off their personalities. It's part of the evolution of the game.
  9. Not only a rare one, this might actually *be* the most *random* three way trade in NHL history. Cannot recall seeing 3 fringe NHL players getting swapped like this.
  10. Congrats Bulldog, he was one of my favorite Canucks during a miserable run for the team and I was sad when he got traded. That said, he played 243 NHL games which is impressive when you remember he was an undersized defensemen with limited offensive upside and who played 4 seasons in the NCAA and another 4.5 seasons in the AHL before making his NHL debut with the Canucks. I won't be shocked if he's one of those guys that becomes a great Coach and/or GM in the future.
  11. Well, if you read what I said you'd know this. 1) Consensus seems to be that Castonguay is taking heat for this. So you're wrong in saying that she "doesn't look bad at all in any of this". She's not looking good. She also doesn't look like a monster either. What I do think is that Castonguay had the right to tell Allvin what she knew/what her interactions were with Doerrie. With that said, it seems as if Allvin interfered with a HR investigation by preemptively firing Doerrie before an investigation could be complete. An HR investigation would have yielded one of four definitive results. Castonguay is reprimanded if HR felt Doerrie's complaints were warranted, Doerrie is reprimanded if HR felt Doerrie's complaints were unwarranted, HR uncovers that Doerrie was behind team leaks and is fired, HR uncovers that Doerrie was not the source behind any leaks, Castonguay's fears are unwarranted, back to business as usual. The reason this management group is taking heat is because, like what's been seen a lot in hockey as of recently, they didn't follow proper workplace protocol and let the investigation take place. Legally, Doerrie is going to make the argument that Allvin & company unfairly damaged her reputation by assuming she was leaking information to the media and she's going to likely win some sort of settlement because they did use that as the reason to fire her even though they didn't have any evidence to suggest she was leaking anything. That's actually what this case comes down too. All of the mental and physical health stuff is, unfortunately, just filler. I don't agree with you that Rachel comes off as a spoiled employee who can't handle criticism. I think she's rightfully upset that she didn't get a chance to defend herself through proper channels (HR). Frankly, it's kind of a boomer comment to say she's entitled when that doesn't seem to be the case. And even if she had some entitlement, the organization did parade her out in front of cameras with Castonguay and Granato earlier this year to celebrate their hirings publicly which could have inflated Doerrie's ego given her position in the organization compared to Castonguay and Granato. 2) Yes, we do have a response letter. That's true. It's short and generic. It doesn't say much of anything. It's a copy and paste statement (which is totally fine and what Castonguay has been advised to do by Canucks attorney's) but let's not say that really covers any of the allegations Doerrie lays out. With that said, this story is still very One Sided because we have a small statement from Castonguay and a multi page legal complaint from Doerrie to compare. 3) How many 25 year olds are working at high levels of NHL management? Most 25 year olds are still near the bottom of the barrel. Cutting video footage isn't a glamorous job but I'm sure there's hundreds of 25 year old's right now cutting video footage for CHL teams (and below) instead of doing it for an NHL team. Her rise has been remarkable and she's been praised as one of the more promising young minds in hockey for quite some time. (Rachel Doerrie worked for the Devils before joining the Canucks and she did comment how the Canucks weren't the only team trying to hire her earlier this year, so she's got industry heat). As I said in my original post, I do believe Castonguay is going to be a GM in the league. Most likely the first female GM. Perhaps the first female GM/President. It feels like a given. This might be a setback for her momentarily but I don't think this costs her much long term, it's just a stinger short term for her and the organization. As I said also, this whole situation feels like it comes down to inexperience. Inexperience from Castonguay/Allvin in how to handle a situation like this and inexperience from Doerrie for maybe being too enthusiastic with the media. It's a classic case of miscommunication. And the last comment about entitled millennials is *very* sad sack boomer of you, dude. You can make an argument but there's no need to punch down like that.
  12. After reading the complaint, this is how I'm feeling about all of this. Emilie Castonguay clearly behaved in a "mean girl" way. Unfortunately, in a male dominated sport like hockey, I think women in positions of power in hockey may be more ruthless than most. I think she overplayed her hand here and comes out of this looking ugly. I do believe Castonguay is going to be a GM in the league sooner than later (She's been a favorite to be the first female NHL GM for awhile). She also comes from the world of NHL player agents which is an even more ruthless side to the sport than management. Castonguay is going to have a hard time getting out of this looking good. I think there's an unfair expectation that because the Canucks hired two female executives + Doerrie that there would be this great comradeship between the three but that was clearly not the case here. Doerrie may have acted naively but Castonguay went above and beyond to other Doerrie and her comments about Doerrie's mental health come across as straight up nasty, if true. And, based on the traction this story is getting, one thing is certain -- Castonguay was wrong that "nobody cares about Doerrie". Seems like a lot of people do. I wish her luck with her future endeavors. I think Doerrie's got a bright future in the sport if she wants it. Canucks screwed up royally letting one of the more intriguing young minds in hockey go like this. It feels like Castonguay (and to an extent Allvin) have greatly misunderstood what kind of media market the Canucks have thinking this story would just... go away. Allvin clearly overstepped. I'm not sure there's a way to defend Allvin's actions here. Doerrie went to HR and before the HR department could complete its investigation, Allvin fired Doerrie. That's a big no, no. He needed to allow the investigation to take place and then make a decision with HR involved. By only taking Castonguay's word about her interactions with Doerrie, he opened himself and the Canucks to this lawsuit. Honestly, it shows Allvin's clear inexperience in this field. I'm surprised Rutherford didn't step in to mend this before it got to the point where this could happen. Rutherford let Doerrie down. This is one sided. We don't know Castonguay and Allvin's side yet. This does feel like a classic case of miscommunication. It also shows Castonguay and Allvin's inexperience when it comes to the roles they are in -- not from a hockey management perspective but a people management perspective. I do think the Canucks, as an organization, end up paying out Doerrie a settlement. Since this whole thing seems to have come up because Boudreau let it slip that Doerrie had been promoted to the coaching staff and it seems clear she wasn't talking to the media besides confirming a thing that Boudreau said publicly at a golf tournament. Makes you wonder, if all the rumors of a rift between Rutherford/Allvin/Boudreau are true -- was Doerrie the first casualty in that cold war?
  13. Aquilini is an incompetent owner. Always has been, always will be. The fact that he fired Nonis for not overpaying for an aging star forward tells you everything you need to know about why this team is the way it is all these years later.
  14. His cap hit is too high for the Canucks to claim. My suspicion is that if Jost clears, he'll be traded to a team that likes the flexibility that he doesn't need waivers to be called up/sent down. I do feel bad for the guy. I read an article on The Athletic about how gutted he was to be traded away from the Avs this past season as they went on to win the cup. I can see that still affecting him into the season.
  15. No, no, no, no, no. There's no need to trade Lekkerimaki. You can probably deal Boeser and a lesser prospect for Pullock and no pick.
  16. Reminder that Francesco Aquilini is not a successful business person... his dad is. He's playing with his daddy's money with this team. There's no need to raise him up and call him a "good" or "great" businessman. Everything he's done has been on the back of the foundation his dad, Luigi, set up for him and his siblings years ago. It's obvious he's not good at his work by the way he runs this team. He's clearly a short sighted, temperamental manchild.
  17. I was referring to Hoglander and Podkolzin... who have constantly been scratched and are never in the lineup with each other. Karlsson would be a good call up. He's got 10 point sin 9 games and Bains has 6 points in 8 games... so there are kids that can come up. I do think it's probably a little early for Bains but Karlsson should be in the lineup sooner than later.
  18. Time to unleash the kids!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  19. Brossoit has been playing on the Henderson Silver Knights in a rehab assignment. So he was coming back. He is 0-2 with a 0.769. I'm assuming because of those stats, and the fact that Logan Thompson has become the Vegas Golden Knights unlikely starter, and Adin Hill doing well as a backup (he's 5-0), that this facilitated Brossoit getting sent down to the minors. Brossoit likely plays out most of the season in Henderson. Won't get claimed, won't get traded unless his numbers improve. He's got a 2 mill cap hit that expires at the end of the season. Likely stays as Vegas's #3 unless he is lights out in the AHL. Vegas got super lucky finding Logan Thompson when we did.
  20. Honestly, I'm game for him to pull a Brent Burns. Get drafted as a forward, turn into an offensive defenseman. He'd end up in the Jared Spurgeon category of defensemen if he switched. He seems like he's earned an ELC at the very least, regardless of position.
  21. You really need to read this letter written by Miller's victim's mother to understand why you are in the wrong here. Nobody is saying Miller shouldn't make a living. People are saying that being in the NHL is a privilege, not a right and it's a privilege he has not earned. Nobody is going to stop Miller from getting a normal job out of the spotlight. People just don't seem eager to see him making millions of dollars playing hockey in the NHL.
