Best wishes to all our CDC members, for a much better year that sees Covid-19 gradually slip away. Live long and prosper! I especially want to acknowledge the younger folks that are continuing to follow the Covid-19 protocols through NYE and NYD. I salute every one of you. Your commitment to your loved ones, neighbours, communities and province is very impressive.

Jonathan Dahlen. The very fact that he'd rather play in the lower ranking SEL, so he can be a star in his home town speaks volumes. Can you imagine an AHL player doing the same thing? Really shows a lack of drive/passion for the game imo. The greatest athletes want to play in the best league, against the best players. Costmar appears to be a more rounded player than Dahlen and may have a chance to challenge for a bottom 6 position. Dahlen's game is one dimensional, which limits him to only play in the top 6.

NHL season to start Jan. 13 with 56-game season

Definitely his style of play is a team need. Also, being able to play a defensive game will likely get him into the NHL sooner than many other jr. players. I do believe that he will take some time to reach his potential though. He surpassed the Russian Jr league and the 2nd adult league long ago; both of which far exceed the Austrian Jr league. I agree that the 3pts don't prove anything about his NHL playability, nor does the treasure trove of goals the Cdns are scoring against Germany and Switzerland. We are all speculating on what Podz NHL game will be right now, but I think Larionov's and Button's thoughts are at least based in professional experience.

Very sad; especially when I see how young his kiddies are. I don't understand why anyone attributes the wearing of a mask as having any negative effect on the economy. The wearing of masks has been very common for people in many Asian countries long before Covid-19 came along. The greatest harm to the US economy is the allowing of the virus to get so far out of control.

Either one would be a huge upgrade for the team. My preference is Hamonic, as he is very good on the pk, would be great alongside the two rookie LDs and plays a tough, physical game. I also think he can be had for a lot cheaper than 3.5m for 1 year, as he has self enforced limitations on where he will play (Western Canada). https://www.eliteprospects.com/player/17519/travis-hamonic A talented and hard-nosed two-way defender with good offensive instincts and even better defensive perception. Excellent four-way mobility up and down the ice. Backchecks hard and keeps the opposition to the outside. Creates energy through his gritty, physical brand of hockey, most commonly on display in the defensive and neutral zone. Blocks shots well and understands how to take shooting and passing lanes away. Sees the ice well and makes crisp, tape-to-tape passes. Has the ability to be a noticeable difference-maker in games and works hard at all aspects of his game. [EP]

I think the goal is to create herd immunity safely, by utilizing the vaccines. Currently, the BC government has determined that 80% of the population will agree to the vaccine over the coming months. This figure will be above what is considered herd immunity. If all the front line workers, elderly and others with medical issues have received the vaccine by April, there will a huge drop off in the daily infection rate (and certainly we can exhale that the death rate will plummet). Dr. Henry has stated that everyone in BC who wants the vaccine, will have it by Sept. By then, the numbers will be incredibly small. A virus needs many, many hosts to survive and just like Sars Covid-1 and the Spanish Flu; once herd immunity has been established, they tend to just fade away. In my experience, people usually tend to go back to whatever was normal to them before a life 'event'. With herd immunity beating down the virus to submission, folks will see the results in the low number of positive tests and will gain confidence in their safety. There may be some behaviour changes, like; less shaking hands, more cleanliness/washing hands, taking time off when sick (during infectious days), if sick, wearing a mask to do an errand and placing a higher value on loved ones. People that are afraid of the virus and dying, are the folks that are at risk to have that happen. They are the folks whose lives have completely been stifled over the past few months. The rest of us are still out there; working, enjoying nature, staying in contact with loved ones (with whatever means that are safe), going to school, working on home improvements, etc. Imo, this pandemic has affected the very old and the very young the most. Time will tell how much the kiddies have missed in their overall development, as well as their mental health. For the elderly, we can only hope that there will be a silver lining in this horrible year. I'm talking about the living conditions and lax healthcare in some care homes. Hopefully, our communities will support a kinder and more generous way for our elders to live out their days being safe, cared for and feeling like they are a part of the community.

NHL season to start Jan. 13 with 56-game season

Here's hoping JB waives somebody and then signs Hamonic to a cheap/1yr contract. Nucks have too many Fs and that's not even counting the possibility of a rookie or 2 staying with the team. Fingers Xed! -
[PTO] Devin Shore, Ryan Stanton with Oilers
higgyfan replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
He just kind of disappeared after he left the Canucks. He's 31 yrs old now and has only played 1 NHL game since the 14/15 season. Yes, I do hope he makes the Oil! -
It's hard to say what the outcome will be. I would prefer to see the Canucks in the Pacific division (I was hoping that Dr. Henry would say no to nhl hockey in BC and that the Nucks would go south. The Canadian division is gradually becoming a decent one, and I think the standings will be tight. As far as Tanev is concerned, I would say that Schmidt is a clear upgrade and I think there is a good chance they pick up Harmonic (which would be an upgrade on Stech, but he may also be on Cal radar). Also, injuries have always been the decline of Tanev's rating as a dman. His health will entirely depend on deployment, as we saw from the results of his lighter duties during the playoffs. At 37yrs Giordano is getting slow and was quite awful in the playoffs. I preferred the Canuck top 6 over the Flames, but losing TT may even things out, although I like the Canuck players' speed and commitment more. I like the Canuck bottom 6 more and their depth as well over the Flames. Marks comes up the winner in goal tending, but Holtby could easily have a comeback season as he is not far off from seasons of being a very good goalie. Demko and Rittich seem to be a wash, with a slight edge to Rittich due to experience. Every one of the Cdn teams have their weaknesses, and it will be important to get ahead early on. The Canucks had the most success in the playoffs, which may have a huge effect on their confidence.

I was suggesting that Podz might be 50-60pts in his prime. I would hope that Pete and Boes will be getting closer to a pt a game (or more for Pete) by then). Bo is putting up better than expected points while playing with 3rd line players. I think the improvement in his skating has made his offensive game much better.
-
I don't think Podz will ever be an elite offensive player, but he will likely become invaluable to the team, just the same. People have been screaming for this kind of player to be added to the team. His incredible passion for the game and endless drive are not something that can be taught, but they are the characteristics that often allow a player to become the best he can possibly be. He already understands the defensive game and has tremendous courage to 'hang around' in the dirty areas, work the boards and hunt the puck down. With his increasing mass/muscle, he will become a very difficult player to play against. I agree, he will need to improve his speed. Like Bo, he appears to have an odd stance, so hopefully it can be a quick fix. He will likely progress slower than what fans would like, as he plays a man's game and is just a boy. He will likely be on the 3rd and 4th lines for a time. He will probably end up being a 50-60pt player, who steps up and outplays himself in the playoff games. Although I see him as a hybrid Bo/Burr (with more fight); I believe he just might become the Canucks Ryan O'Reilly when he reaches his prime. Of course this is all speculations, but so are all the other opinions around here. One thing I know for sure though, is that we need to have patience and allow this kid to develop his game.
-
At the moment, the Canucks do not have a top 6; it's more of a top 4 with Miller, Pete, Boes and Bo. Losing TT is a big drop in talent. Imo, Pearson would be a very good 3rd LW, but is not good enough to consider him a 2nd liner. This is a huge season for Jake. If he can step up his game and be consistent, he will be a good option in the top 6. He has a lot to prove, and I really hope he is up for it.

a. He repeats the same thing over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over... b. I won't bother doing a count as I have better things to do. I think the probability that he has a lot more posts than the others you speak of. But I do agree, some folks around here really need to find other things to do other than follow this thread all day/night.

NHL season to start Jan. 13 with 56-game season

I can think of lots of places I'd rather be than BC: in the winter anyways. -
Yes, he is entitled to his own opinion. What I and others have issue with is the amount of spamming of his opinions in this thread.
-
Yes, we have pages and pages of his spamming posts to let us know. I agree. Where we have failed is in the number of citizens that prefer to do what they want, rather than follow the safety protocols provided. Yes indeed.
