Caulfield has always played alongside great playmaking Cs. At 16 he had Turcotte, then at 17 it was either Zegras/Turcotte or Hughes. He's a great sniper/shooter for sure, but I don't think he's the reason any of those terrific Cs are going to be picked so high in the draft. Until I see Caulfield having success playing against full grown men, I see him as a high risk/high reward player and would be concerned if the Canucks chose him.

Lucic had 3 fights last season and one of them was Tanner Glass Guddy had the same # but is a much better fighter. I don't see it as much of a deterrent to the hitting of star players in the NHL. The real problem is that the league doesn't seem to really care if their stars get concussions; especially in the big $ playoffs.
-
I'd do it in a second, but I doubt Avs would. Can you imagine JB walking away from the draft with Byram, best fw available at #10 and Soderstrom/Seider? Canucks d in a couple of years Hughes + Byram Juolevi + Soderstrom/Seider ? + Woo I think the Avs would want Horvat (he's the player they really need) + 2nd and maybe more.

The fantastic drive that possesses Bo, Pete and Brock seems to be rubbing off on the entire team. Now that's a leadership group!

Hit the heart button by mistake, Alf. I've only seen one report (other than Button's) that has Podk drop to 7th, due to his slow start in the u-18 tournament. I think if he drops, it will be due to the Russian factor, not due to lack of skill. The only scout questioning his puck skills is Button; pretty much everyone else is praising them. Still think LA or Detroit pick him.
-
Button seems to be the holy grail of scouting around CDC. In reality, he is one of hundreds of scouts and is more than capable of miscalculating a prospects value. He seems to be out on a limb on this one. Haven't heard any other reports on Podk that are critical of his stickhandling or most other skills. The Russian factor will have him drop in the draft, but I still think he's gone before #10.
-
I haven't seen that criticism of him. I think he is too good to pass up and it's unlikely he falls to the 10th. Quotables “Podkolzin checks all the intangible blocks, as he can be counted on to address a variety of his coach’s concerns. What separates him from all the other “toolsy” forwards is that he can either create or finish plays while traveling at maximum speed, and his strong balance and stickhandling seems to convince defenders to back off more than they should. Podkolzin is effective both in open ice and during trench warfare, and he’s capable of completing on-the-tape passes that lead directly to quality chances near the net..” – Steve Kournianos, The Draft Analyst “An absolute pit bull. Podkolzin offers high-end offensive awareness, lightning quick hands and a confrontational style. Despite some muted point totals coming from his club team, he’s made a habit of showing up in a big way on the international stage. A potential high-end producer in the NHL. – Cam Robinson, Dobber Prospects “Podkolzin is very skilled and can make the flashy plays to deke defenders, but he rarely does that off a standstill or along the walls. Instead, Podkolzin is typically full speed ahead to the net. He’s also a very good playmaker and finisher who can take advantage of space if defenders give it to him by making a pass or sniping from a distance. He’s a fine/good skater but hustles so hard that he looks like he’s always going fast. – Corey Pronman, The Athletic (from ‘Pronman: 2019 NHL Draft midseason rankings’, The AthleticNHL – 1/29/19) "Podkolzin started his draft season with a great performance at the Hlinka-Gretzky Cup where he scored eight goals and three assists in just five games. He was also the team captain in that tournament. Podkolzin has all the offensive tools needed to become an elite level player. He has great top speed and he can make plays at high speed. He’s capable of making quick turns. His shot is amazing but he also has the vision and passing skills to be a good playmaker. His one-on-one skills are great as well. On top of all that, he has good size (6-1, 190) and he isn’t afraid to use it. He can power his way to the net at the junior level, and when he adds more muscle to his frame, he can do that at the pro level as well. The Russian factor may cause Podkolzin to drop in the NHL Entry Draft and you may need to wait a couple of years while he develops in Russia but his offensive upside is one of the highest in this draft class." Jokke Nevalainen This kid has the potential to become an elite power forward in the NHL. I think LA or Detroit take him.

Don't want Lucic either. Would have to be an amazing return for me to like a trade. Buying him out is not a great option, as his salary cap is still 6M for 4 more years. Del Z's contract is over now. Canucks have to take Podkolzin...BPA of course. Think they can do better than Boldy at 9th. I don't think you get Seider at 17, although he is becoming a little overrated by Nuck fans. Sutter's value has definitely dipped due to all the injuries. When he's healthy, he is a very good addition to a rebuilding team, as he plays the heavy defensive minutes and is extremely good on the PK. If Van could retain some of his salary, it might make the trade a little sweeter. Problem is, the Canucks would still be paying Lucic's cap and I don't know what happened to Eriksson in these proposed trades. Yes, Jan's trade proposals are always interesting.
-
He'd be a great addition for sure, gizmo. I don't think the Canucks have the pieces to make a trade though, as the Jets would want the 10th overall + one of our core players. Worth a try to see what they want though. Probably the only way the Canucks get a top pairing RD is via a trade or pay for an older ufa player. In a few years they will have the pieces to trade for a guy like Trouba without hurting the team. Next years' UFAs have some awful good RDs that might fit the bill though.
-
Yeah, he's already getting $5.5 so he'll be wanting more. He will also want term. There's not a whole lot of options at RD in this ufa market, so I would rather JB find a short term filler and wait until the 2020 ufa. Definitely a much better group of rds available. Sign a UFA vet to short term, or trade for a player that will enter UFA in the next year or two (preferably from a team that has cap problems).
-
Some players do much better on the large surface ice where the can avoid being hit as they close in on the net. It's also great for these players to play against teams like Italy, Norway and Austria. Yes, Pete uses his brain, but he also will take a hit if he thinks a teammate might score. He's quite fearless actually. Great back/for checker as well.
-
Bo's line is awful 3rd line is mismatched 4 rookies on defence. Canucks in top 3 for next year's draft! All kidding aside, I think the ufa market has a player that can help Bo's line and a rd that can support Hughes (other than Schenn who should only play 6/7th d). I don't see the Oil trading Lucic for Eriksson. They desperately need to rid themselves of cap. This doesn't do it. I don't think they trade their 1st to rid themselves of him either.

I see that a few of the dmen are sneaking into the top 12 or so in the more recent rankings. Considering JB seems to have a leaning towards dmen (Juolevi and apparently he preferred Maker over Pettersson), I'm not 100% sure he picks a FW. My preference would be a C that can translate to a W if needed.

Like others have stated; it depends on what part of the province they are from, as English is more prevalent in Montreal and the SW towards Ontario. Also, consider that they are situated on a continent of(majority) English speaking people, so they have access to English tv and radio. Canadian French has a lot of english words, so that helps as well. They certainly have an advantage in learning the language, for sure. Luke Robitaille was born in Montreal and played his entire NHL career in the US, so he is completely bilingual with hardly a trace of an accent.

Yes, I agree. The team really needs a top 2 RD, Edler and probably draft a dman this year. The top 6 needs a 1st line LW and a 2nd line RW. This is not to say they need all of these players at once. For this year, the team needs to improve from the last; possibly even making the playoffs. They should be at least finishing the season around 16 - 18th place. I don't know if JB can find a top pairing RHdman, but they at least need him to be top 4 and mobile/puck mover. This is the most urgent position to fill; especially considering the lack of available prospects ready to make the NHL jump. I don't see this player in the coming UFA (other than EK), but the 2020 market is way better. Perhaps acquire a vet(short term) that has the hockey sense to play alongside Quinn and then focus on Bo's line. Adding a RW(perhaps Connolly) that could complete Bo's line would certainly support a positive improvement. Tanev will probably be traded later in the season as will a couple of bottom 6 guys. The following season, the team needs to make the playoffs. Prospects joining the team will not likely make a difference at this point, as they will still be green. Adding a LW that can complete Pete's line will definitely help them make the next step. At this point the Canucks may be able to package a trade for this player, rather than UFA. I still think Taylor Hall kind of guy would be a great fit. More trading off vets will continue. In the 3rd season, the team will (hopefully) have some prospects that are ready to make the jump, so trading remaining vets will ensure space for the younger players. I think the team will be a 2nd round exit in the playoffs. Of course, all of this has to take in salary cap and the looming Seattle draft. Not an easy task for a rebuilding team. Back to entry draft....I think they will go with on of the Dmen (Seider sure looks like he'd fit the bill). I'm really hoping for a miracle that jumps out and gifts the Canucks a 12-16 pick, so they can snatch one of those great forwards as well. One can dream eh?
-
Guys, you're forgetting about young Luke (LD). At 15yrs, he is already an inch taller than his bros and is considered the best skater of the three (WOW). Kid will be in the 20-21 draft and is projected to be in the top 10 (already).
-
The top 6 needs more help than the middle. At this point, whatever improves Bo and /or Pete's line will inevitably help the middle 6, as the best players not named Bo, Pete or Brock will have to fight to play on the 2nd and 3rd. I don't think it has to be Panarin (but that would be awesome), as there are several other youngish fws that would fit nicely.

[Proposal] Horvat to Colorado
higgyfan replied to Schmautzie's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Can you imagine the Canucks walking away from the draft with...#4 either Byram or Turcotee #16 either Newhook or Soderstrom and Canucks #10 either Krebs or Seider Let's just say... Byram, Newhook, Seider and Jost for Horvat. If JB turns that down to keep Bo, he regrets it for the rest of his career (which becomes shortened by rejecting it). -
9.5m X 6yrs for a 30yr old player with a NMC who was just reprimanded (along with his BFF), to quit slacking off. Would rather see one of the great UFAs (or next year) signed for similar amount and keep Juolevi and Virtanen.

[Report] Ken Hitchcock won’t return as Oilers coach
higgyfan replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in General Hockey Discussion
New coach will be the 9th in the past 10 years. New coach begins year 14 of their infamous rebuild. -
Yes they sure should. The best thing is that they have 15 players signed and only 8.4m salary left. Oh dear.
-
I'll take one of those please!
