[Confirmed] Jim Benning signs as new Canucks GM

Except that Oates needs a lot of work on learning how to develop talent. His track record, albeit small sample size in Washington, is not exactly glowing. -
[Confirmed] Jim Benning signs as new Canucks GM

It doesn't matter really. They will be picking at different positions in the draft. Canucks near the top, Bruins near the bottom of each rounds unless either has acquired picks (not sure off the top of my head). There are no secret players out there, just different opinions of them. -
[Confirmed] Jim Benning signs as new Canucks GM

The choice of whether or not Benning would be allowed to participate in the draft would be part of the deal if Boston would release him. As mentioned, Craig Button wasn't allowed to participate in the draft that year for Calgary as part of his release from Dallas. Bob Gainey was behind that and Button was held out of participation. Another example was Jim Nill going from Detroit to Dallas, however, he WAS able to participate in the draft on behalf of Dallas and could use all the scouting info he obtained from Detroit. Ken Holland said Nill had provided so much good for Detroit over the years that it wasn't fair to him to not allow him to participate in the draft for his new club. So it all depends on if Benning is even interested in coming here and what sort of release stipulations Boston puts on him. Realistically, it shouldn't matter as far as the first round goes as Boston picks near the end and Vancouver near the top. Essentially, They won't be looking at the same players. Outside of the first round, it's of little consequence as finding impact players becomes more of a crapshoot. -
I love watching boxing way more than MMA but I do agree the sport is hanging on by a thread. Boxing will return to prominence in North America when the heavyweight champ is an American. For whatever reason, the heavyweight division drives the popularity of the sport. No one on this side of the atlantic ocean cares when the heavyweight champ is Russian with zero charisma. As for Hopkins, I have never been a fan of the trying not to lose style that he employs. It's not fan friendly. I can appreciate him for what he is as he is really good at his craft but he's frustrating to watch (and more frustrating to box against I bet!).

All the NBA really did was save face with all the sponsrs pulling the pin. They allowed this fella to own a team for years despite his obvious distaste for minorities. I don't see why anyone is giving Silver any credit. This was the worst kept secret in the league and he had no choice. If he at all sided with Sterling, his reputation and the league's reputation would be mud.

Chinese-only sign reignites language debate in Richmond, B.C.

Oversight? Yeah they just didn't realize the text in their ad was in Cantonese. Spell check must have missed that. -
The Oilers should trade down instead of taking ANOTHER forward. They really should be thinking of drafting Fleury.

[Speculation] Kesler to remain a Canuck
RonMexico replied to TheRussianRocket.'s topic in Canucks Talk
Although its baseless speculation, I like it. Too many fans are emotionally tied to these guys. I have good memories too but it doesn't cloud my judgement. This is a good time for this team to be re-branded. You can't do that with the stale core Torts referred to. -
while I do agree that this is how it is, WH, this is the old way of thinking. The NHL is in a salary capped world where first round picks need to play; especially the top 10. Teams need to have the flexibility of having instant contributions at a lower cap hit. Though the major stumbling block is the draft age which needs to be higher so more guys are NHL ready in terms of physical development. This is usually the only thing holding back a prospect's chances of immediate contribution. You never hear of NFL first round picks needing some seasoning on the practice roster....why? Because they are physically ready (some might say mentally ready but thats highly debatable!) due to them not being drafted at 18. I would argue that players aren't ruined by being rushed, they are ruined by being held back due to physical immaturity. These young men have been playing hockey since they were knee high to a grasshopper and the coaching in Canada is so good that these players are learning the game at an elite level early. Their skills are there and they just need to be older and need some slight refinement to be successful. Until a shift in draft age is implemented, then we are stuck in the old 'it takes to time develop players' cycle.

I don't want to believe Botchford can break anything other than a nail.

Despite the popularity of the phrase the customer is always right, they most times aren't and the business is trying to save face. And here we are today.

Is there ever any tangible proof that this phenomenon actually exists? Are you just equating poor performance with losing the room? You can't tell me that the Preds haven't tuned out Barry Trotz many times over. How often can a player on that team go into a new season and not start a revolution when Trotz rolls out the same old broken record style he employs? Even if he spells it out with conviction, are you still going to believe it? I know it's just one example but you can use just about any coach who has lasted beyond their initial contract with their respective team as an example too. Losing the room seems like a media creation more than anything.

As a fan, do we really need all the details? Can't we just watch and try to enjoy the games? There is no point to try to relive the past. It's all water under the bridge. The team appears to be trying to move forward, we as fans, should too.

Explain what is wrong with being optimistic? I'm not wearing rose coloured glasses when it comes to the Canucks, but if a person thinks that everything Gillis has done to date has been dogcrap, then they aren't paying attention and just have an axe to grind. There is a lot to like moving forward. Judging history in hindsight is a waste of everyone's time.

Looks like Weber has about 75% of the stick to chop at but instead smashes him on the hand.

You've just described a common problem that many bubble players run into. They play an effective style in the AHL only to abandon it all together when they get to the NHL. I call this the Hansen Effect. Hansen is a great 3rd line player. He is a great forechecker, PK'er, etc. and chips in with the occasional point. Then after a good stretch of play or out of necessity, he gets promoted to the top 6 where he, self admittedly, changes his game to try and be more of a scorer....and fails miserably in this role. I see this as a common problem with players who get called up. They want to do more than what they can and end up looking lost. Many players would be better off if they just played 'their game' instead of trying to be more. Do what makes you effective!
-
Let's not get carried away. If he was doing all that good stuff, then he wouldn't get benched. As Elvis pointed out, he is a replacement level 4th liner. That essentially means you can get that same game from just about anyone who has made it to the NHL.
-
How is it the coach's fault when a player can't grasp the opportunity presented to him? This isn't his first stint with the big club. He has bounced back and forth. Once you are benched for a defenceman to play your spot, you really need that light bulb to go on or you are done.
-
He needs to be shown the door after this season or just left to have an AHL career. So far he has shown nothing to warrant further consideration at the NHL level.

GDT March 17th Canucks vs Tampa Bay Lightning 4:30 PM

Don't you be pigeon-holing us into groups! -
It's ok to not post every single thought in your head.

I want to see more than one game of production before declaring his triumphant return from the grave.
-
He's an effective 3rd liner. He fully admits that he changes his game when inserted into the top 6. He tries to be a scorer and fails miserably at it because he stops doing what made him effective in the first place.
-
Yep I saw that not long after I posted that. Still stand by my thoughts. On one hand you want him to get back it at and hope he forgets the last game and on the other hand he deserves a game off to re-focus.

You gotta expect Markstrom to get the nod in net. Not that i'm blaming Lack at all, but he could use a mental break....already.
