One of the first things that got me interested in hockey was when Vancouver got a team. Back in the day, us kids used to watch a period or so and flood into the streets to play road hockey. There were about 10 of us in 2 blocks and it became quite competitive. The biggest thing was the Habs new goalie, Ken Dryden. Back then, we got most of our Canucks info via the newspaper and we collected all the players in our Esso Super Savers books. But how often did we see them play? A couple of times a year on HNIC when they played the Leafs or Habs. My Dad was a Blackhawks fan and loved Bobby Hull. I liked them too but preferred Gordie Howe but I almost never saw him play. It was different back then. As I grew older I became more of a Canucks fan but it wasn't until maybe 75 when they finally topped the Smythe division that I was a real "fan"

I think we are watching Jake discover who he is as an NHL player. That is, what a player with his size and speed can do offensively. Not just in terms of crashing the net but there is an awareness and ability to make plays and set people up. He attracts the attention of defenders which leaves opportunity for others. Defensively, I love his back check. He's been stealing pucks in the neutral zone for a while. 2nd PP unit (including Jake) was awesome. You're right, consistency is a thing he has to be aware of. Other players too -

As I see it, and I'm not a hockey player, the strategy has more to do with the break out and neutral zone play. I mean, there are multiple ways to break out. The 2 obvious ones for me are the long 2 line breakout pass (which the Canucks seem to use a lot) and all players coming back to support the puck, making short passes and skating the puck down the ice. I get that you have to take what you can get which depends on whether the other team is playing a variation of the trap etc. Is dump and chase really a strategy or something that is done when you can't easily carry the puck in? Doesn't it have a lot to do with puck management? Possession is clearly preferable but so much in hockey is improvised The other thing that I've read here is about the football analogy. You know how Belichek has multiple defensive looks which he throws out there to confound offenses even from play to play. Obviously hockey is not football and changes like that can't be made quickly but there are things that can be done to change a teams approach as the game goes on. The Canucks seem to do pretty well early in the game but by the 2nd half, they do worse. Is this because they are tired or because in game adjustments have been made? I can't believe that Green, who was an NHL player who played 970 games with 7 different teams under many good coaches doesn't get some of this nuance. I mean, I'm a lay person, none of it should be that subtle or difficult for a player to deal with who has made it all the way to the NHL. Players do have to take some of the responsibility for poor execution. Elliotte Friedman reminded us the other day on 650 that Green has been groomed by the Canucks to be the coach. He coached in Utica for 4 seasons and is on his 3rd with Vancouver. Ok, now that he has a team with some talent on paper and some expectations, things are going sideways. But look, they have invested years on the guy, you don't just chuck him out when adversity strikes. He needs feedback, and a chance to make corrections. It is foolish to panic and reject years of development of this coach without giving him a fair chance. Feedback, criticism, and a chance to learn and make corrections and adjustments. If Green does get fired, I wouldn't expect it to happen until the off season at least. A short Christmas break is coming up when the Canucks typically take stock. Management and ownership do a review I think. Green and others need a chance to figure out how to take this team to the next level. -

Loui is 23 on the depth chart when the team is healthy. There are 19 healthy bodies ahead of him so he is back in the press box. Isn't the Loui narrative getting a little old? -

I think they're both feeling it Alf. Even FA is getting pissed about how this team is playing. I agree with Benning ..... break outs, dump ins when they're changing lines and for forchecking. One thing that also bugs me is when the forwards do have possession down low, they seem to work hard to get pucks back to the point. Teams know that they always try to do this, why not keep the puck low and work to the net. They're too predictable -

I have been corrected on this. Sutter and Beagle had also been injured. Another key veteran who has escaped injury this year has been Tanev. There have been injuries to these key veterans who the team relies on for long periods in the past 4 years. Obviously, Beagle hasn't been around for the whole 4 years. While the Canucks have made great gains this year, depth is still an issue. I singled out Edler because somebody else had commented that the defense had not been breaking out as well recently as they were in October. It's not just Edler but he is a big part of it. Zone exits are huge and the trap teams have given the Canucks fits with their reliance on long breakout passes. Lately breakouts have been poor against a lot of teams. Passing not on the mark etc. I would like to see this group become proficient at several strategies for breaking out This is one thing that is going wrong. There may be others -

I think that most of the time Myers is fine. He gets exposed sometimes because while he is a pretty good skater, he is not fast to say the least. As long as he keeps his composure, he is quite serviceable and he does use his reach well. Put him under duress and you get mixed results. He has similar height to Tryamkin but Tryamkin has something like 40 lbs on him. Remember when he leaned on Richardson and his leg snapped like a twig. Try is a big boy unlike practically every other player in the league My personal favorite -
