Bennings final cut this year was 2 smaller, less physical players. This goes along with additions he made this past off season when he added 4 bigger, more physical players. They aren't necessarily fighters but that is a thing that is a small consideration in team building these days. However, the Canucks are getting harder to play against.
-
The good thing about the additions that Benning made to the top 6 is that players like Leivo won't be playing above their level, and a rank of 294 would put him at a 4th line level. Last season was his only season with 40 or more games and his only extended period of continuous games at the NHL level. I think that we're only really getting to know what sort of a player he really is and this season will tell. I'd like to think that he's better than that but we shall see.

Baer is about a 0.55 ppg player and has been for the last 3 seasons. He got to this level when he started going to the dirty areas. His game down low is fine but he really doesn't have the size and has also suffered injuries. He hasn't had a season with more than 70 games ever. I love the guy but his durability is the issue. Leivo and Virtanen produce at a 3rd line rate and that is where they are slotted to play this season. For both, 25-30 points is expected if they are healthy, more would be a huge bonus.

I hate it when that happens......wait.....what? -
The difference between Baertschi and Leivo is that one of these players is a 2nd line player and the other is a 3rd line player. They are both 26 years old and for one reason or another both came to the NHL late. Baer has played 285 NHL games and 124 AHL games while Leivo has played 133 NHL games and 171 AHL games. So I would suggest that both players are who they are as players. A good yardstick for judging a players skill level, especially forwards, is their rank league wide in point production. Since there are 3 forwards per line and 31 teams, I have calculated the point production for the 93rd, 186th and 279th player as the threashold of 1st, 2nd and 3rd line production and assumed that they all played 82 games. These are not precise stats only a ball park obviously. 1. the 93rd ranked player last season produced 52 points and 0.63 ppg 2. 186th 33 points and 0.40 ppg 3. 279th 21 points and 0.26 ppg The last 3 seasons together, Baertschi produced 78 points in 147 games which is 0.53 ppg which is well into the 2nd line rank. For Leivo, I have only included his games with the Canucks because last season was the only year where he had a good run of consecutive games at the NHL level. He played 49 games and put up 18 points which is 0.37 ppg. For interest sake, for the past 2 seasons (3 for Sutter for a better sample size) Goldobin 41/101 = 0.41 ppg Virtanen 45/145 = 0.31 ppg Pearson 67/162 = 0.41 ppg 0.44 career Miller 105/157 = 0.67 ppg Sutter* 66/168 = 0.39 ppg Horvat 105/146 = 0.72 ppg

Benning did say that he tried to trade him. I don't blame any GM for not wanting to go there based on his concussion issues. The hit that took him out was not very hard but was very well directed. I really hope that those days are behind him

Ferland Pettersson Boeser Pearson Horvat Miller Leivo Sutter Virtanen Schaller Beagle Motte [spare, Eriksson, Gaudette] Edler Myers Hughes Tanev Benn Stecher [spare, Fantenberg] There's the team as it sits. Now, Benning has said all along that he wants a team that is fast and hard to play against. But of all the players on the list above, none of them could be called a soft player or a perimeter player. Well, the 2 that you could call soft make up for it by being supremely skilled. I think that this is the evolution of the team that Benning wants to build. I like Baertshi a lot and since he has a $3.3M cap hit, I don't expect him to be picked up. He'll be back.

Chilli has a bad rep? It seems like a kinder jentler place than Abby. Apples and oranges really.

I'm from the south coast of BC. Grew up on the Island, moved to Van for 25 years, now in Abby because it's more affordable and can still keep my lower mainland job. An ex-urb is what I think they call me.

Sutter has always scored more than he assisted. 135-125-260 career. His ppg is 0.38 which is fine for the 3rd line especially in a match up role. I'd say he was good for 15-20 goals in a full season which is nothing to sneeze at. It's his play making for me which is why I like Baer on his line. I still consider him to be trade bait as the season wears on. He was a useful piece except that he had 2 seasons with the Canucks where he was injured a lot. I really hope he is over his sports hernia / groin issues. No wonder he lost a step last year.
-
Agree, Sutter was brought in as a match up guy to shelter developing kids. The team has moved along. The talent level is such that they have the players to have 3 offensive lines now and Sutter is the odd man out. They could make Sutter a 4C 5 v 5 who also plays the PK because face it, he is a better player than Beagle. Either way, Sutter is the square peg here.
-
Was it his fitness level? All I have heard was that he didn't make one of his off season goals. He checked in at 226 at camp, just 3 lbs lighter than last year. I didn't watch the bag skate but bigger guys tend to do less well at things like that anyways. Is there a source that I missed? Not speculation.

Gaudette has certainly earned a spot on the roster. Benning always says that if a young player earns a spot, he will make room. What some people are forgetting is that it can take several months to make room. I think that Gaudette making the team (since he isn't waiver eligible) is going to require a trade. The easy choices remaining imo are to waive Goldobin and Schaller. Next, they could either waive Biega or Fantenberg. If Gaudette is sent down, that is all they have to do. To have Gaudette play, they would have to waive Motte who has already shown that he is an effective and speedy 4th line winger. Eriksson could go too but like people have said, take away the salary and you've got the 6th highest point getter from last year, good on the pk and does all the little things (I kid but Higgins was that guy at the end too) The other candidates to move to make room for Gaudette would require a trade. Virtanen, Sutter, Beagle, Baertschi, Leivo.....obviously as we go down the list, we're getting into guys who are role players but who we would rather keep on the team. When Roussel gets healthy and is ready to play again in Dec or Jan, another player drops off the list too
-
Well, they've got 2 players concussed, Boeser and Fantenberg so how many have to go down? 1? 2? 3? If it's only 1 it's Schaller. If it's 2, add Goldy If it's 3, add Fantenberg
-
Ugh.....friggin Zona....dull dull dull
-
Add Miller......Hughes.....the world is our oyster
-
I saw him doing some little things....
-
They've got a lead......hey, if anybody was wondering why there were empty seats tonight.....
-
I think they want Goldy to make the team. He's just not showing enough for me unfortunately
-
Ha ha.....Ferland is smart enough to adapt
