A couple of thoughts: waiver eligibility, players who may be going back down might get snapped up for depth this time of year (Dowling) but DiGiuseppe isn't waiver eligible (does this mean he is likely to stay up?) We've heard from management that they really want to be developing Hogs and Podz so maybe they think that a call up is exactly what he needs at this point Useful to look at the forward line up right now after these call ups Kuzmenko Pettersson Boeser Beauvillier Miller Garland Podkolzin Dries Lazar Joshua Aman Studnika DiGiuseppe IR: Pearson, Lockwood LTIR: Mikheyev It makes me wonder what they're going to do between now and next September. Landing a 2C would really help with forward depth. Does Raty make the team out of camp as 3C? Talk of moving on from Boeser and/or Garland means that they need top 6 help so how deep do they cut? They're saying that Mikheyev will be back for camp.

What's The Deal On Demko? (Discussion)
Crabcakes replied to Nuxfanabroad's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Demko is a good goalie not a magician. Look what he was playing behind. There are limits to how long a great goalie can support a bunch of bums. The unfortunate thing is that everybody is now questioning Demko's ability. Well, maybe it's fortunate for the Canucks because they couldn't get a whole lot for him now and since he's on a good deal for 3 more years they should keep him. On the stealth tank, why trade him? Just be over cautious and keep him on IR until they drop a place or 2 in the standings -
Doubt it. Don't forget what happened at the draft last year when it was leaked that Lou was interested in Miller. The deal was scrubbed and all of a sudden he traded his 1st for Romanov. Lou wanted a centre back then and has revisited Vancouver to fill that hole. Lou is a vindictive SOB when he is crossed, he'll cancel a deal that he really wanted to make out of spite.

Look at this from a year ago (2021) post draft explaining why Raty fell from a very high expected draft position to 52 OA It's pretty interesting but before any of you start jumping off bridges, this video was made BEFORE Raty's D+1 year where he went 13-27-40 +26 in 41 games in the Liiga. He has made adjustments and is leaning more towards a draft steal.

[Discussion] Which Horvat Deal Would you do?
Crabcakes replied to AngryElf's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
The deal they got is real and I don't think it is bad at all -
There were 4 wants as far as I recall. Top 4 RHD 3C 1st round pick Roster players 25 and under The biggest need is the top 4 RHD and they missed that. They probably got the highest 1st round pick that they could hope for. Raty is apparently NHL ready, 20 year old 2-way centre, 6-2 190, on 1st year of ELC, could be the 3C next year, don't really know Beauvillier, 25 year old, left shot winger, 5-11 182, $4.1M, UFA after next season. With Miller moving to centre, and the loss of Mikheyev, they're going to need one for the remainder of the season. They won't be forced to use Podz or Hogz. I was really hoping for a top 4 RHD but they're going to have to get one some other way.

Did you hear the talk about how Miller said to I-Mac that he gets into his play so deeply and if it doesn't work out he gets so mad at himself that he blacks out for a few seconds! This is why he doesn't get back into the play on the back check. It's an emotional issue. There is hope that Tocchet can work with him on this. I feel as though they might see eye to eye. We'll see.

I agree. $8M for Miller is fair for a 70-80 point top line winger which he is if you take away his career season 2021-22. FWIW, that is exactly how he's projecting for 2022-23 However, this says nothing about whether they should have picked Miller over Horvat. But look, Horvat has been a solid 60-70 point centre (and that's being generous) who is having a career season this year. Is this to say that he's going to repeat that performance for the foreseeable future? It does not. He has been running on an unsustainable s% which was as high as 24% and is already starting to slide. At least Miller's year last year was due to a higher than usual shot rate with a consistent s%

But what Rutherford has said is talk, I think a lot of what he has said comes from frustration. Allvin is supposed to be the one who makes the decisions on moves and signings and he has done fairly well in a very limited way. Some of the big things that he has done such as signing Miller before Horvat and the awkward departure of Boudreau I think, could be rookie mistakes. If JR the advisor is letting Allvin step in some puddles, it is a part of his learning process perhaps. To get back to Rutherford's frustration, there is surely a plan in place but the ability to execute that plan is limited by opportunity. In a flat cap world where 20 of 32 teams are hard against the cap it's really hard to get a reasonable return on Miller for example. Is it a bad thing then, to just not make a deal? Maybe not. But knowing that Horvat's contract was also up, and signing Miller and not Horvat just because it was maybe easier to do is really making a decision on which player is going to fit with the group long term. One good call, one not so good. Rutherford's frustration is also bubbling up when he talks about forcing the issue by making deals for young players with high draft pedigree who are not yet performing at a high level as their ELC is running out. This ahead of the strong 2023 draft where draft picks are more valuable. This is opportunity again but as Gear suggested, longer odds of getting a good player than drafting. He also was saying that if certain players can't be moved for assets, that they might just buy them out. Rutherford is really forcing the issue of turning over the roster because change is necessary but buyouts are less than ideal. What Allvin has done is to turn over the bottom of the roster because it's easier to do and after a year or so, we have a bottom 6 and bottom pair D who are mostly under $1M. His top 6 additions, Mikheyev and Kuzmenko were opportunistic and he has made the hard call to send Podkolzin and Hoglander down to Abbotsford. These are patient moves. The restrictions that the flat cap have brought on the league are easing because it looks like the cap will be going up a little this offseason and a lot more the year after which means that deals will be easier to make. We can see this from the number of GM's and scouts at Canuck games.
