  1. For those wondering, Willie O'Ree was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2018 as a builder.
  2. I look at goal differential because year after year, teams with a negative goal differential don't make the playoffs. Some teams with a positive goal differential miss but the greater the GD the greater the chance of making the post season. By this stat, San Jose at -10 is bound to fall in the standings. Edmonton at +2 isn't strong but Calgary at +21 is. Obviously at -31 and greater, Chicago, Seattle and Arizona are out of it. At +20 and better Nashville, Colorado, St Louis, Vegas, Minnesota and Calgary are shoe in's. Holding playoff spots but not sure things are Ahaheim +10 and LA +6, out of the playoffs but still positive Edmonton +2, Winnipeg 0, negative but a chance to become positive Dallas -2, in tough Vancouver -9, San Jose -10 It's certainly not a be all stat but if you go back decades, there are only a couple of teams with a negative GD who made the playoffs. I would expect the way you have analyzed it, you are probably more accurate. The only prediction of yours that I disagree with is Calgary Cheers
  3. Fighting for a Wild Card spot. There's separation between the top teams in the west, the middle and the bottom feeders. The Canucks are in the middle between 35 (Canucks) and 41 points (LA) which is where the Canucks would be anyways. Had the Canucks not slumped in the beginning of the season, they would still be in this group, just a little higher up. 7 teams fighting for 2 playoff spots
  4. Do we need another LHD? Not unless we move OEL Crouse is ok but he's a 3LW at best so I wouldn't give too much. Better the devil(s) we know
  5. Poitier was so much more influential and important as the first black man to win an Oscar. Bogdanovich was so important too but not at the same level. Poitier's passing makes me weep, even as a white man. He moved me in To Sir With Love, the first movie I saw him in and then there, there were so many others that were fabulous. His body of work was just so stunning. His influence was beyond peer.
  6. Ha ha, Highmore and Lafferty are similar players on paper and Gaudette and Nylander are both on their 3rd teams. I think the difference is that despite so so results, Gaudette has a good attitude
  7. Dallas played Benning like a fiddle and got Hamhuis as a free agent for nothing.
  8. You are right Deb. It sux to see Petey like this, but he'll get over it.
  9. Chaisson is only playing because he's depth and the new brass hasn't properly evaluated yet. Highmore is showing himself to be better imo. Has more of the qualities that interest Rutherford. Neal had a decent career but was bought out by the Oilers and has laid an egg with the Blues. Pass
  10. You're a brave man looking at our cap space. It's the new horror flick "The Nightmare on Griffiths Drive"
  11. Interesting interview with Myers in the first intermission tonight. He seems to be playing perhaps the best of his career. He has taken a step forward mentally. I think that his ice time is usually over 20 minutes this year and he could have become that top 4 RHD. Of course the Canucks need another and Myers is 31 (32 in Feb). I think that the Canucks do have enough talent. A core at least. They need players to support that core better but also they need to rearrange the assets a little bit. I think they have too many high end forwards and not enough high end defense. So a move along these lines should be made. Of course there will be progression of the players that they already have in the system but they have to continue to add to the pipeline. This is the key to staying competitive over the long term.
  12. It's great having a GM who isn't afraid to tell the media what he thinks and what his plans are. And "stuff" isn't a word in his vocabulary
  13. Nah, to listen to Rutherford in interviews, he thinks Petey will come around. As far as he is concerned, Petey is one of the players you build a team around. He was asked this very question on Halford and Brough on Friday. https://www.sportsnet.ca/650/halford-brough-morning/hour-3-jim-rutherford-on-his-vision-for-the-vancouver-canucks/
  14. Didn't Puljujarvi get out of Seattle and back to Yeg is a day or 2?
  15. I think he's a keeper and better than a 30 goal guy. My beef is that Benning assumed the best an gave him a deal with a 7.5 QO. Nobody wants to lose a good player because he was given a contract that doesn't fit. I got this from The Hockey Guy. If the Canucks trade a top player to fill a hole it could very well be Boeser 100% because of that contract.
  16. Thanks for this. It's the bottom line for Green obviously but we certainly have to consider what he had to work with. 2016-17 was the bottom with 69 points in 82 games (29th out of 30 teams in the standings) which is a pretty crappy team. Each year they made progression under Green and in 2020-21 they made a step backwards and a further step back this season. This is the more important observation to make about this team. The step back was long lived which points to a bigger problem than a typical non-linear progression. I think that looking too closely at the minutiae we lose what is really going on because overall performance is what we should be measuring rather than getting out the microscope and bickering over which AHL player should have been waived first. Something unexpected happened after the playoff bubble run and the blame was higher up the food chain than Green. Benning fooled with the chemistry of a team that was on the rise. There were flaws before and there were still flaws after he pretty much turned over half the team but there were players who were important to the group who were gone. The players were all at sea and I would suggest that Green was as well. What worked before was no longer working and Green couldn't adapt. I couldn't say why but moving on from Green and Baumer was the right thing to do. But the real issue was higher up and Aquilini dealt with that as well. The good news is that Aquilini has finally made some good management decisions and they have served to help this bunch of players bond again.
  17. If Brock is actually a 35 goal man, he has to prove it and then I can justify a $7.5M QO. This is the best case scenario and Bennings foolish assumption If he's really a 25 goal man, then he's another Garland. That's not a bad thing but he needs to come in under $5.0M
  18. The screw up is giving a young player a contract that escalates to such a high level in the final year with such a high QO. I have no problem with the AAV but the way the contract is structured, he has to live up to very high expectations otherwise you have to let him go. If Boeser turns out to be a 25 goal man, that's really good but you don't pay a 25 goal man $7.5. Keller is over paid imo. The Yotes are keeping their fingers crossed with him because he is being paid based on an expected progression from 2017-18 when he scored 23 and he hasn't come close to that since. Boeser is a better producer but Keller is a lousy comparable.
  19. I think there are a couple of factors here. 1. Who is the real Brock Boeser? I certainly want him to be the Boudreau Boeser and the rookie Boeser and even last years 23 goals in 56 games Boeser. That's the only way I can justify $7.5M but even so, it's a lot. 2. But also, do we see the Canucks morphing into a team that good players want to play for? Is he willing to take a little less to play here? These 2 things go hand in glove because if he waits for his QO and it doesn't come from the Canucks, he becomes a free agent. If his performance is still at a 20 something goal rate, he may be offered less on the open market. But like I said, I really want him to stay because all things equal, he should be considered to be a core player
  20. Just watched THG's Christmas Canucks video. He's suggesting Boeser. I totally bristle at the thought but there is some merit to the idea because his qualifying offer is going to be $7.5M. It's the last of the really badly structured Benning contracts. This is your legacy Jim Benning
  21. I rarely watch a full game if the Canucks aren't involved; they just don't hold any interest to me. I am interested in the results of other games only. I have interest in certain players around the league but that's about as far as it goes.
  22. Partly right, his mother won 2 olympic gold medals (76 and 80*) in basketball and his father was a high level soccer player. https://thehockeywriters.com/7-cool-things-about-alexander-ovechkin/
  23. You don't win arguments by calling me wrong. I've heard plenty who have argued that and often times I agree. Myers is borderline imo. You could call him a 4/5. He happens to be playing as well as he ever has at the moment. I expected better when he was acquired but he gets exposed on a regular basis because he just doesn't have the foot speed. They don't call him the giraffe for nothing. It's 2 1/4 for Tanev and it's because he has custom built shin guards and skate guards. It's a mystery why nobody thought to have them made years ago.
  24. It's true that Edler would have had to be replaced but it's much easier to replace left handers than right handers. Tanev, at 30 last year, I would have been ok with a 4 year contract or even 5 when you consider how good he is defensively and what a great puck mover he is. And he hasn't had injury issues in Calgary. Stecher is a 3rd pair guy who can play up the line up. You call that middling but I would take him over Poolman, Burroughs, Schenn or Bowey. And Toffoli showed himself as a very good fit in the short time he was here. Consider that Benning gave up a 2nd, Madden and Schaller for a rental at this stage of the cycle. It was a bad idea to make the deal and then he let him walk without even a phone call to the agent which compounded the error. All it would have taken is a little respect from Benning while he was off chasing rainbows. Talk of middling, lets look at the present right side of the D corps. You could argue that the whole bunch are 3rd pair caliber players on good teams. They're completely void of top 4 RHD! Don't get me wrong, defense would still be the number 1 issue but when you give up a player like Tanev for nothing, you are letting a player slide who plays one of the most difficult positions to replace. This is all about bad asset management and just being negligent about it. Benning was over due getting fired imo.
