If this season bombs, do you support a rebuild ?
Crabcakes replied to MaxVerstappen33's topic in Canucks Talk
So you mean a re-tool. Tell me, what's wrong with a core who was so good 2 years ago who has had 2 years (sort of) development time. Are the players trash? I think we've got a few slumps going on and a lack of leadership and identity because there has been too much turnover. Is having more turnover going to help? This is essentially a decent team who needs time to gel and become a team. -
New GM the 3 year plan. [Discussion]
Crabcakes replied to hammertime's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I think that it's always necessary to have a good mix of players in term of age because each age group brings different things to the team all of which are important Mature - bring stability, experience, culture carriers Prime - top performers, consistent Young - lower cap hit, enthusiasm, development for the future There is no specific age for each group but it is important to have each group represented Early in Benning's tenure, after 2014 there were mostly Mature players and young players and of course they couldn't compete without the top performers. The drafted core is beginning to reach the top performer stage. Horvat is leading the way at 26. It's hard to tell when a player reaches this stage because you don't know until he gets there. Is Pettersson (23), Boeser (24)? Maybe not because they've fallen off this year so far. Who's in the Mature group? OEL (30) (but he is new to the team), Sutter (32) (not playing), Halak (36) (new) -
[Proposal] Boeser to Chicago
Crabcakes replied to Ilya Mikheyev's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Absolutely. To move a player like Boeser (core) there has to be a really good reason like filling a big hole in the line up. I wouldn't even mind throwing in a sweetener to get the right player back. However Benning has to be careful with his moves. Boeser is tight with the other core players -

Ya, I agree. I just think that moving on from these players has happened too soon and before the young core really were established. -

The Canucks weren't short handed once last night. That is a pretty good strategy to fix an ailing PK. Their 5 on 5 play is ok in terms of not getting scored on a lot. So just stay out of the penalty box, play disciplined and they have a chance -

Ya, quote part of my post because you don't want to deal with what I actually said. This all depends on what you think is WRONG with the team. The players are not $&!#. They are better on paper and 2 months ago we all thought (including Benning obviously) that this team was going to take the next step. Why aren't they? I think it's because the leadership group / culture carriers have been stripped. This happened over a 2 year period. You can't get rid of the old guard before the new young core is fully established. Who were these players? Edler, Tanev, Markstrom, Sutter. It's no secret that Hughes was pissed off when Tanev was let go. Does that have no impact on his and other players play? When you have as much turnover as has happened to this team, there is a danger of losing their identity. Horvat and Miller are clearly not enough to carry the culture forward easily. Hell, I think that the reason why Schmidt wanted out was because the team had been damaged last year and this is part of the reason why the success that the bubble team had didn't carry forward. And look, Schmidt on Winnipeg is performing like his old self again because the Jets have an identity. Vegas took off in their first year because they found an identity quickly. They latched on to the concept that they were the guys that nobody wanted and they were going to show the league that they were good and they sure did that. So now, the Canucks have to find their identity again. I don't know how long that will take But turning the team over again is an exercise in futility and it's just not going to yield any magical results. The players are human and human factors can't be ignored -

Granted, mistakes have been made by management. Serious ones in the last 2 years. What? They harped on team culture and hanging on to culture carriers and now, there are zero players remaining from the pre-Benning period Moving forward, building a TEAM should be priority 1. How? Continuity, give the boys time to bond, time to develop accountability to each other. I'm not saying no deals but they have to be damn careful who they move Rebuilding the re rebuild is a friggin joke. Don't even go there -

is it 10 or 11 seasons with no playoffs for the Sabres? That's what I'm talking about -

Benning used to preach the importance of team culture then in 2 years he let many of his so called culture carriers slip between his fingers as he became fixated on trading for OEL. Now he's got a team full of newbies and young players who are looking around for their Dad. -
It is the players. But why? If this team is having culture and leadership issues, the last thing they need to do is to **Blow It Up** The only way out of this mess is to let the team become a team and develop their culture and time is the only cure If you want to change the management group who put them in this place, that would be a better idea.

You just have no idea about group dynamics, culture or leadership do you. There are always leaders in every group. It doesn't take grand speeches to make a leader. It takes respect. All the players I listed had the respect of the others. Stecher, I'll grant you was an equal to the young group but he was well liked on the team and he set a hell of an example for working hard. Benning dropped the ball big time by letting all of these players go. And if you're thinking that losing important players in the culture of the room, the leaders, isn't important, you only have to look at how the team plays without them.

It's imperative that ownership figure out what went wrong, who was responsible and make the required moves. We have Hansen and Hirsch both saying "it's the players not the coach" but there's lots of things that the team is not doing that points to bad coaching like defense, PK and PP. But wait, if the players are unhappy, have no leadership maybe they just don't perform. It only takes a few % off their effort and / or care level to affect performance at this level. The last success this team has had was 2 seasons ago in the covid bubble when they played far better than expected and gave Vegas a run for their money in the 2nd round. Toffoli was a breath of fresh air at the trade deadline but the guys in the room who everybody was following were: Markstrom, Tanev, Edler, and Sutter (funniest man on the team they say). Now, they are all gone. Benning was criticized last year for not knowing his room when many of these guys were gone and the team wasn't performing. But Sutter and Edler were still there and eventually they came around only to get slammed with covid. But what happened? Benning went all in on OEL last year and it was a difficult negotiation that just didn't come off. In the meantime, he didn't even contact Toffoli and Tanev who were free agents and they lost patience and signed elsewhere. He had made the decision to go with Demko over Marky which is a good decision on paper but Marky was such a personality and now he's gone. Sutter, is still trying to get over the effects of covid and is still under contract but not with the team. He also let Stecher walk who was well liked in the room. Forwards from that team that are still with the team are: Miller, Pettersson, Boeser, Pearson, Horvat (5 of 12) Defense: Hughes and Myers (2 of 6) Goal: Demko (1 of 2) Benning has turned over practically the whole supporting cast and more. Add to that most of the key personalities, who played with the Sedins, are gone too and people wonder why these guys are rudderless. So it is the players. It's not the coach. It's going to take time for this group to find their identity, to get to know and like each other, and to become a team again. And what do we do with Jim Benning? Bye bye. We don't want this happening again. Hire a new GM who gets people.

I could get behind having a President as well. But the President would have to be an executive, not the Linden version which was more like co-GM's (one experienced and one not). Somebody who would baby sit the owner and let the GM do his job.
