Brisebois again?

As it sits, top 6 is: Mikheyev Pettersson Kuzmenko Beauvillier Miller Boeser Garland The only one who's salary is an issue is Boeser and he is overpaid by around $1.5M which is not a disaster. On D, the top salaries are: Hughes(7.8) Myers(6.0) OEL(7.2) Hronek(4.4) Bear(1.8) The value issues here are clear. OEL and Myers. JR said, back before he zipped it (and before moving Horvat), that they're going to try to trade some of their issues and if they can't, they'll buy them out. I think there's a fair chance they can move Myers after paying his bonus. If they can't, I can stomach keeping him for another year and letting him go to free agency. He's going to be tough to replace. Could Bear do it? OEL is another thing altogether. Trading OEL would be a serious case of larceny and there's a sucker born every minute but a buyout may be the only way out. It's also going to be much easier to replace OEL.

I wonder how they see Bear fitting in? I mean, I like him as a player but only see him as a bottom pair guy who could play up the line up if there are injuries. If you look at the way Allvin appears to have structured the salaries on D, all of the bottom pair players come in at less than $1M. If I am right, this means that Dermott is on his way out. Bigger picture, I think for sure they try to move Myers after paying his bonus. If they're getting rid of Myers, they'll need a RHD like Bear at a minimum and had better sign him before pulling the trigger on Myers. But they have to have a plan for a bona fide top 4 RHD for the future. Is this what they draft with their 1st rounder this year? I doubt they win a cup without one.

Vancouver Canucks president of hockey operations Jim Rutherford penned a letter that went out to the club’s season ticket holders today. In the letter, which in years’ past has been written by owner Francesco Aquilini, this is what Rutherford had to say to Canucks fans: "our vision for this team has not changed". Vision is a higher and more esoteric level that something a mucky as strategy. Vision is an ideal and the strategy is how to achieve the vision so he's not getting pinned down on the Miller "about face" for example. Core: Pettersson, Hughes, Miller, Demko. Miller now? Emerging new players: Kuzmenko, Mikheyev, Bear, Hronek. I guess this is the list of non-core players who they are not likely to trade this summer. Development: Tocchet implementing style of hockey and accountability. Unified vision from Abby to Van. Rutherford is proud of operations staff. Named: Allvin, Granato, Castonguay, Clancy, Johnston, Smyl I guess that JR is now writing letters so that he can control better what he says. Thoughts?

[Signing] Canucks sign Akito Hirose

Based on his interview, he seems pretty happy just to get some NHL exposure so for him, it's a no lose situation Whether he even gets a game is another matter. I have never seen a contract like the one he got before. I'm trying to figure out what it means. My take is that it protects the Canucks from committing 1 of their 50 contracts to a player if he just doesn't have a chance. If he does have a chance, the Canucks have first dibbs on negotiating a contract with him. -

Boeser is overpaid but I think you have to look at his history because the last couple of years have been tough for Brock. If he is indeed coming around, he's going to be at least a 25 goal forward again and Garland has never reached that level. Garland is an attractive player but his production has always been inconsistent. When push comes to shove, Garland is a 0.6 ppg player and Boeser is 0.78 ppg over their careers -

And some of those, will play in the NHL when they're not really ready and never reach their potential -

Neither will the coaches. Now, managers might. What happened with the Canucks was that as the new coach was trying to have the team play to a system, there was an adjustment period as they were learning the system and for 10 games or so, they were losing. This brought the tankers out and I must admit, that I was somewhat seduced with the prospect of getting a top 5 pick. However, the team started buying into the system and at the same time, they were hitting a soft part of their schedule. And now they are winning. They're going to end up picking in the 8-10 range and will still get a good player. The thing is, the core of the team is 23-27 and players drafted in the upcoming draft are 17-18 and the core will be in decline when players from this draft will be getting into their prime. So why get bent out of shape over not getting really high draft picks during this draft? They're not going to help the core. They will be a part of the next wave. -

What I really liked was that being up 3-1 after 2 and they shut the door and finished the game 3-1. It wasn't so long ago when a 2 goal lead going into the 3rd was a guaranteed loss. -
Rathbone seems to have fallen out of favour. This is a huge opportunity for him.

[Signing] Canucks re-sign Christian Wolanin

Here's the list of expiring contracts: Kravstov - former 9 OA pick needs convincing to play in Abby, new contract pending DiGiuseppe - extended 2 @ $775 Bear - QO $2.2M, RFA w/ Arb - over paid compared to other bottom pair or lower players, may not be re-signed, would he accept much less? Burroughs - this year $750/500 2 way, UFA - expect to be re-signed Brisebois - extended $775/375 1st year, $775 1 way 2nd year Juulsen - QO $750/250 2 way, RFA w/ Arb, apparently talking Wolanin - extended 2 @ $775/500 Dermott - QO $1.75, RFA w/ Arb, not likely to be qualified Hoglander - QO $874, RFA, will be back Woo - QO $874, RFA, playing better, will be back All the players re-signed are earning less than $1M. I think that those with QO's for more than that are doubtful unless they think that Bear is going to be top 4 (which I doubt). It's interesting to see how Allvin is structuring the team wrt salary and skillset. -

Look at Poolman's playing history. He doesn't play more than 40 or so games a season. Has a history of migraine headaches. They're debilitating. My neighbour gets them. Can't hold a job. Is on a disability pension. Sucks. Benning signed him for 4 years -

Moving on from Bieksa was necessary at the time for sure. I'm not saying he wasn't. But from that time, Benning was looking for a RHD. Look at all the misfits Benning went thru after that: Bartkowski, Gudbranson, Schmidt, Poolman, Hamonic who were all supposed to be top 4. Granted, he still had Tanev until 2020 and when Myers was asked to play north of 20 mins, he earned the nickname the Chaos Giraffe -

1. He said process over results as the team was learning his system. At the time, they were losing and the Canucks were looking like a rusty old tank. Tocchet is a stubborn old war horse and also made comments like 'we're going to stick with it no matter what' and 'we're evaluating players and will see who will be with the team long term'. They're still picking it up but they're starting to win now. The system is working to a point but I'm not blind to the fact that Demko is stealing games. 2. & 3. The addition of another top 4 RHD who can apparently log a lot of ice time is certainly going to help with Hughes playing less. Don't forget, it also means that Myers will be playing less. Maybe if Myers is playing 16-18 minutes instead of 21+, he will be much more effective as well.
