  1. This whole debate of Tkatchuk vs Juolevi reminds me of the Kopitar vs Bourdon from 10 years back.
  2. Any new updates from Travis Green? His opinion is perhaps the most important. The coach who has the job of teaching JV the finer points of the game and perhaps a few words here and there on how to be a professional. Points and stats are just part of the picture. If Green says JV is showing up as the first guy on the ice, the last one to leave to take shots on the backup goalie, constantly at the gym, watching lots of videos and eating/living right.... that's more important than goals/points total.
  3. I just wish that BC Lions games are cheaper. I know they are still a ticket revenue league, but a full stadium @ $15 per ticket is better than half-full @ $45. Better atmosphere mean and cheaper tickets will mean more willingness to buy gears, food, drinks, charity lottos, etc.
  4. There's many different strategies and philosophies in terms of investing. First, trading and investing are completely different, since the former is based on capitalization of short-term trends..... the latter more for longer-term strategy. Try to separate your funds accordingly. Trading would be..... you have a feeling that OPEC will be limiting oil supply, thus you're gonna quickly jump in by purchasing oil company stocks, oil ETFs, etc. Investing would be..... you think that graphene batteries will be the next big thing within the next 5-15 years, thus you buy stocks in those companies to hold. Or you still think the Bank 5 banks in Canada are safe bets generating consistent rate of returns and you want to hold them until retirement (some rebalancing along the way). Technical analysis may be useful for finding entry and exit points for certain stocks. For shorter-term.... not an exact science. There are also seasonality charts to follow.... eg. gold rises from October until May. Strategic allocations where you search for growth industries or steady businesses, etc. There are also completely random stuff you can research that can give insights to the market. I mean, depending on whether the NFC or AFC wins the Super Bowl, one gives a higher chance for the market to go on a bull run. Or how if you follow fashion, the shorter the women wear their pants and skirts, etc.... it usually means the economy will be entering a boom cycle. The more conservative the fashion, it will mean it's a recession or one is coming. Sounds very weird... but there's some stats to prove some of it.
  5. It's good that you have a IA that's been around. Lots of "financial advisors" at the banks are just glorified sales staff that offers almost no insight and knows very little. Some are like, "ETF? Oh, I've heard of them...." Usually they have high turnover, so yeah. If possible, get someone who is like a CPF, PFP, and rarely CFA. I believe someone (maybe Warren Buffett) says that people should invest in what they believe in and what they use/buy. If you love drinking Coca-Cola... maybe buy some coke stocks. You, your spouse, your kids and your relatives all drive Toyota cars.... investment in Toyota might not be a bad idea. Income Trusts like A&W, Rogers Sugar, the Keg.... you don't really need to try to find something very fancy or complex like some next generation graphene battery or some brand new cancer treatment that's in the developmental stage...... each sounds great, but not the best choice for investment for those starting out.
  6. He's 27.... so his "developmental" stage has pretty much closed. If he's gonna be a #1 NHL starter, he will need to put everything together quickly. I think it's the inconsistent starts that's messing up his game. Hard to get a rhythm when the other goalie is playing out of his mind, but if the Canucks truly believe that they have something special in Markstrom, they need to make that clearer.
  7. Just keep in mind that financial advisors need to make a living too. Not saying they're out to scam you and to steal your money, but they just might not putting their fiduciary duty on top of their list. Maybe they insist you sign up to some in-house mutual funds, maybe shares in their own company/bank, or some life insurance policy, etc. Chances are they are not bad ideas... but perhaps not really the best ideas. A few little tidbits that may be helpful for your investment journey: Rule of 72.... 72 divide by whatever is the expected rate of return and that will be how many years it take for it to double. 72/10% interest = 7 years for it to double in value. 100 minus age: stocks/fixed income ratio.... if you're age 30, then you have should have a 70/30 ration where 70% of your portfolio should be with equities/stocks... and the 30 percent to be with fixed income (preferred shares, trusts, bonds, GIC, etc).
  8. It's hard.... but hindsight is always 20/20. One thing to remember is that you can always "catch the next train".
  9. He does finish his hits, he's defensively reliable, he battles hard for the puck... that is how he will stick in the NHL. Scoring a goal, but being a liability, playing soft and disappearing on the ice will mean a quick ticket back down to Utica. Everyone wants Gaunce to put up points and to keep up what he's doing, but it just seems that he's not getting any puck luck. In other games, you see him buzzing around the net, getting some shots off and maybe almost deflecting pucks in.... he's getting almost at least 1 chance per game. I wish the coaching staff could just put him in with some more skilled players to see what he can do. Perhaps a game where he's allowed to play on the Horvat or Sutter line. Good players create chances, but expecting a rookie to be driving offence on the 4th line may be asking a bit too much.
  10. I caught only the 3rd period but he was battling hard for the puck, causing turnovers, etc. The effort level is definitely there (something he was a bit criticized for in jr).
  11. While the KHL is leaps and bounds higher than any junior squad, but by just glancing the current roster, it seems most of the players there are like mid-20 to into their 30's. Even though OJ will be back in his home country, it'll be hard for any youngster to be with a club without someone else in the same age group. He will definitely get used to long-distance travel going to Siberia and back, so it would make his transition in the NHL much easier. Instead of being a man among boys in the OHL, he'll be a young man among men who are in their prime... much harder level of competition. It will force him to rely less on his strength/speed and more on positioning and technique.
  12. As if the snowcapped mountains and the blue waves isn't enough to represent Vancouver, they decided to add rain. Could have been worse.... they could have used squares with dollar signs representing expensive houses or change the colour scheme to grey to match No-fun-couver.
  13. Even though marijuana is legal in parts of the US, it is still illegal to actually export the stuff there. Imagine if the rules change and suddenly CGC can send stuff south of the border. Cha-ching....!
  14. I'm just a bit worried about having Stecher out with the Twins and Edler. While, he's a battler and good with stickchecking, he's easily out-muscle'd by bigger forwards. Considering that Edler can be iffy at times on defense and the Twins aren't great in their own zone either, you have 4/5 players who are weak defensively on-ice at the same time. Ehrhoff worked because he's more experienced than Stecher and during the time when Edler and the Sedins peaked, thus they were controlling the play in the offensive zone. Since the Sedins has gotten even slower, and Edler still haven't been stabilized, maybe it's better to have Troy out with Horvat and Baertschi instead, since they play a more up-tempo game.
  15. I'm an investor in CGC as well, jumped in when it was just under 3 bucks. While this current uptrend is nice due to the expansion and all, it's important to remember that revenue has not matched with valuation. A few months back when it rose up to nearly $18/share, to market cap of over $1 billion..... for a company that had only $10 million in revenue. While I'm treating this as a long-term play, there may be huge corrections in the future.
  16. Probably this has been answered already.... On the last play of the game, didn't the ball carrier has both his knees on the ground before reaching the line at the end-zone? I was thinking that this may be a "skate-in-crease" moment for the NFL.
  17. Wasn't Ryan Murray supposed to have been chosen instead of Yaks? I'm not saying you can't draft based on need, but when PLD was expected to be lower, there should have been a possibility to trade down a bit. With the exception of Matthews, no centre were expected to be #1 centres. Worst case scenario for the CBJ would that they could have draft Logan Brown or something. 6'6 offensive centre would be enticing to anyone. Anyways, I guess we're going off-track as this is supposed to be about OJ... who is a good pick anyways, lol.
  18. When it comes with higher draft picks, it should usually be BPA, not just drafting based on need. IIRC, according to most scouts, It was Matthews as the #1 with the 3 Finns up next. Tkatchuk, Chychrun and PLD after depending on positional need. Hence the Oilers were like completely shocked when they were able to draft Puljujarvi. The original point I'm trying to make is that pre-draft, the initial conversation on CDC was whether the Canucks should be picking Tkatchuk, Chychrun, or PLD. OJ wasn't even in the conversation as he was expected to have been taken already.
  19. Using the awesome power of hindsight, the top 3 defenseman chosen (Juolevi, Chychrun and Sergachev) have similar skillsets and ceilings. Wouldn't have been a bad idea for JB to trade down a bit for some additional assets. Of course, that all could just be wishful thinking. While having Tkatchuk would definitely been helpful, the original argument was supposed to be either Tkatchuk or PLD. OJ wasn't even supposed to have been available for pickup as he was slated to go #4. It just so happens that Columbus threw a complete curveball.
  20. I realized that many people lack the ability to brake properly. It's not just slamming on your brakes last second.... it's supposed to be finessed with pressure applied in a more subtle manner and then released just prior to your vehicle stopping completely to prevent that jerking sensation. I saw tons of vehicles with my rear mirror just not slowing down until the last second. If there were any ice or anything, they would have slammed into my vehicle. Going downhill without hovering your brakes during slushy/icy conditions and then just slamming your brakes... you're just begging to get into an accident.
  21. At first I thought he was the one to tip the puck in, but it was deflected off a SJS player. I hope that they can shift back Gaunce from LW to Center. Chaput has been decent on faceoffs, but I want to see how Gaunce plays in this natural position.
  22. They should have hammered all the details before applying the new rule. I wonder how much of potential lawsuits and stuff will be upcoming.
  23. You'd assume the equipment staff may recommend some alternative sticks for him to use. It's been an issue since like 2010.
