Jack: Hey JV... some tip... don't be like me.
-
Where's Mike Keane when you need him, eh? I certainly hope that the Canucks can somehow get some real veteran presence down in Utica, not just for JV, but the entire team in general. I know Travis Green was a long-time NHLer, but the gap between coach and player may buffer the message a bit. It's one thing for a coach to tell you to eat right and work hard when they don't have to, but it's another to see some 15+ year veteran, who has had success in the NHL, who plays down in the minors for the love of the game, and putting in the hard work day in and day out. Someone who isn't afraid to go up to another teammate give them the honest truth, yet at the same time passing along some of their experience and wisdom along the way.

I believe his floor will probably be around a Marek Malik and his ceiling will be Zdeno Chara. Even if he's half way in the middle, he'll be great pickup.
-
If he's nursing his injury, can't he be sent down to Utica to another reconditioning stint? 15+ minutes per game will certainly be better than just watching from the bench or getting very limited TOI.

What I do like is when he battles for the puck, he has the size and strength to compete with anyone. He did mess up a little against Calgary leading up to a goal against, but I do see good things in his game. Usually once per game or once every 2nd game he gets a grade A scoring chance, like somehow coming up with the puck around the net or a screen/tip in front. That's pretty good for a 4th line guy with limited minutes. The Plus/Minus is not an accurate stat, but he's at 0, so he's defensively reliable on an offensively challenged team. His biggest weaknesses when drafted are foot speed, offence and physical level. Being a bigger guy and in the NHL, he will need to keep his feet moving more. His positioning is great, but when defenders like Doughty and Keith can just quickly pass or skate up with the puck quickly, you need to be either check them out of the play or get back quick. Offence.... from a young guy in a defense-first role, I'm not too worried. Most of his goals will most likely be coming up in front of the net.... he's already instinctively heading there. His physical level of play does leave a bit to be desired, as he's probably the biggest forward on the team (Skille is heavier), so he should be pasting guys a bit more. Of course, being a younger guy and not wanting to be out of position may play a role. All in all, he's doing a lot of the little things right. I just certainly hopes that he keeps practicing on his face-off and keeps his feet moving, coaches love that.

The most impressive part of Horvat's game isn't his vision, skills or speed.... it's his compete level. The way he battles along the board, uses his body to shield the puck and if he loses the puck, how he hounds to get the puck back. He may well be the next legit #1 centre a la Toews, Mike Richards, etc.

Imagine his win totals if he wasn't stuck in Florida on those losing teams. -
Wait... if he was injured, why was he even on the bench? Shouldn't he be out of his gears and immediately off with the trainer do some work on it? Perhaps some stretch exercise or some sort.

Trout Lake closed for tomorrow

If only Tryamkin can develop a little more edge to this game. Not saying he's soft... but at his size and with the strength he has, he should be hammering guys. He goes seem to be a little bit more timid after the Richardson incident. Perhaps he's really afraid of hurting others.

To be fair... the number of cyclist is significantly less than pedestrians. The number of people still biking in the snow will most likely be less the amount of people still walking in the snow.

Somewhat of an unrelated question.... If I do open a HELOC, but my property say collapses 80% in value... does the HELOC limit changes? -
I did not express for or against OJ or MT. Just mentioning about the parallels between the choices made in 2016 and those made back in 2005... and the reactions in the immediate aftermath.

This reminds me of the debates when the Canucks picked Luc Bourdon instead of Anze Kopitar back in 05. Need vs BPA.

When he wouldn't report to Utica for the conditioning stint. The daggers were out on CDC.
-
Remember when many were saying he's just some typical money-hungry primadonna Russian and that we should ship him back to the KHL?

Folks who wouldn't mind spending extra for a nicer car, yet complains about costs for snow tires.....

SMH.... people writing off Gaunce after less than half a season of body work. I guess they're the same people who were calling Kesler a bust after his initial foray in the NHL.

Sounders winning the MLS Cup over TFC in penalties. Kinda happy that Toronto lost, but envious of one of the I5 rivals winning it instead. I hope the front office of the Whitecaps take note and open their wallet like Seattle.

And claiming that according to their count and stats.... 2000 people used the bike lanes today too, haha.

Playing his 9 nines within the first two months, thus keeping his ELC intact. As for using up his ELC, It can be good or bad, just depends on how well the player develops. Bo Horvat will be commanding a huge pay increase earlier rather than later due to his ELC being finished earlier. Yet Virtanen, within the same perimeters won't have strong as a leverage due this poorer body of work. If you think a player will take a longer time to develop, then you should quickly burn up their ELC, thus weaker leverage for negotiation and arbitration. But then again, if Juolevi turns out to be the next Karlsson or Lidstrom.... that's a good problem to be having anyways.
-
With the players like Stecher and Tryamkim now seemingly legit and useful blueliners, I hope this will allow the Canucks to not rush Juolevi. Perhaps let him remain with the big club next season, with like the Bo Horvat treatment. Sheltered ice time from October to December, loan to the World Juniors, then see how he performs and how he plays/trains when he returns. Maybe have him paired with someone like Gudbranson, a good defensive player that can "look out" for a rookie. Or pair him with Tanev, someone who can quickly cover his rookie defensive blunders, and to allow him to focus on his offense. 3rd pairing, 2nd PP time, final 30 seconds of the PK.... roughly 12 minutes per night. Give him more responsibility if he warrants it. If he's not ready.... send him back to junior for another run at the Memorial Cup.

Very disappointing to see TFC or the Impact being in the MLS finals. Both teams that really opened their coin purse for talent and are now reaping the dividends of their investment. With the Lions and Canucks in a lull.... if the Whitecaps signed some major international(s), goes deep in CONCACAF Champions League and then use that momentum and win the MLS Championship.... you can expect a major bandwagon effect in this city, a la Canucks 10/11. More success means more ticket sales, more merchandising... thus more money to be reinvesting into the team.... rinse/repeat. Maybe they can somehow parley that into a brand new waterfront stadium.
-
I am a bit disappointed with the lack of playing time that Gaunce (and the rest of the 4th line) received yesterday. He's a defensively reliable player that is good at face-offs..... so he should have at least been out on the PK. Considering yesterday was the 2nd of the back-to-back, you'd assume that WD would have rolled 4 lines more. Just in case someone mentions it, I don't believe the "Canucks had to protect the 1-0 lead".... since with that philosophy... you'll never play him when you're tied, when you're also down by 1-2.... meaning the only good time to play him would be if the Canucks were up or down by 5.
-
Ask him again to take another discount at maybe $1.5 million per season.... then let him know that the team wishes to hire him in some development/scouting capacity after retirement.
