Despite potentially acquiring some good assets for Edler, it is still beneficial to have some vets like Edler to lead and show the way for the young players. The Sedins are probably all we need for our forward vets. Hansen would do well on a contender. Miller is probably in his last season as a Canuck unless he takes a pay cut. It's too early to tell, but Eriksson better put up more points if he doesn't want to get bought out. If we're truly rebuilding, then we're on the right track.

There's two reasonable sides to the argument:
First one is the one the Fateless has stated above.
Second one is Mathew Barzal's (I'll expand on this). Having him in our lineup allows our young players to play within their comfort zone. We all love Stecher, and the way he plays, but Edler is a big reason he can play the way he does. Stecher was not the same player against the Leafs when he played with Tryamkin. It's the veteran presence we do not appreciate as outsiders.
Moreover, speaking of the Leafs, they've traded all of their valuable veterans in Dion and Phil, and put out a lineup of youngsters. Sure they're fun to watch and exciting, but the Oilers have shown that this situation is far from ideal. It can ruin the development of players who are rushed in too soon (McCann and Virtanen), or put in positions that they are not ready for (Schultz and Yakupov). Furthermore, we like to joke about having a "winning culture" even though we lose a ton, but having a straight up "losing culture" is not better. It's fine if we don't win, as long as our young players know they can't take a day off, and have to approach every game as one they have to win. Coming to the rink and knowing that you'll lose later in that day is not the way to go, and this type of culture can take time to get rid of (see Oilers and Leafs).
Say want you want, but having guys like the Sedins, Edler, Hansen, Miller makes sure that there always is a winning mentality in the young players and not a losing one.
