December 1: Canucks trade tiers - Pettersson and Hughes most valuable...but untouchable

in 1981/82 the game averaged 4.01 goals per game per team, so i wondered how much points a player would score if they played every year with 1982 adjusted values. Hi folks. Thought it might be fun to discuss where CDCers think the current top 50 best players in the league. For the first time in a decade or so the Canucks had three players make top 50 in The Hockey News annual top 50 before the start of the season...that’s incredible. EP at 8...QHs at 45 and Horvat at 47. Their top 50 went like this: 1. Mackinnon 2. McDavid 3. Crosby 4. Panarin 5. Pastrnak 6. Draisatl 7. Hedman 8. EP 9. Point 10. Kucherov 11. Marchand 12. Mathews 13. Eichel 14. Kane 15. Ovi 16. Hellebuyck 17. Vasilevsky 18. Malkin 19. Josi 20. Barkov 21. Seth Jones 22. O’Reilly 23. Carlson 24. Pietrangelo 25. Scheifele 26. Aho 27. Marner 28. Heiskanen 29. Stone 30. Barzal 31. Bergeron 32. Werenski 33. Rantanen 34. Huberdeau 35. Price 36. Couturier 37. Rask 38. P Luc-Dubois 39. Tavares 40. Lehner 41. Slavin 42. Connor 43. Theodore 44. Makar 45. Q Hughes 46. Laine 47. Horvat 48. Zibanejad 49. M Tkachuk 50. C Hart Of this group a few notable guys missed out as in JT Miller, Markstrom from Van but must have been close. But playoffs, pedigrees, health and future expectations all come into play and who gets bumped out? Zibanejad and M Tkachuk near the end makes it awfully hard to argue who is more deserving. Also noted that Vegas, WNP and TB has the most guys on this list...TB’s are much much higher though. What do you think? Any big misses? Anyone way too high? I put more stock into THN’s rankings for the most part given who does it, then a lot of other’s that do it (Bleecher, the Hockey Writers, SN and NHL.com)... NHL.com had EP ranked as 16 best centre ... and Horvat didn’t make the cut at all.

It’s the boringest part of the year in hockey. Thought it might be fun to do a poll on the greatest NHL defenseman ever. Anyone who hasn’t been around to see Potvin, Robinson, Coffey, Langway etc hope that you consider them. Orr is the obvious choice for number one. But I hope both Harvey and especially Shore get their due. Hockey historians figure he would lead all NHL defenseman in Norris trophies had they existed back then. He did manage several Harts though ... and had the Norris existed back then historians figure he’s Orr’s only competitor when it came to that (around 10 Norris if it existed back then). And Harvey revolutionized the game as well. The same way Roy did with the butterfly.... I’m still figuring out how to navigate this - but for those that are interested I will keep each round open for a day or two - I’ve started with 15 amazing D’s to start with - I know I’ve missed quite a few that deserve consideration - vote for whom you think deserves the number two spot - and nominate who you think should be on the list. I will add whomever has the most nominations from the next poll. Will do my best to honour AJs top 50 Canucks all-time. Maybe one day QHs would make the top 25 D’s list ... figure at this point in a top 50 list Reinhart would make it for sure. Same with Babych. Maybe Jovo and maybe Brown. As a final note. I’m going to weight first and second all-star team, Norris trophies and personal accolades- but also going to consider which guys played against each other and how good they compared to each other at different parts of their peak/career. A few top guys couldn’t win a Norris until the olds guard was well past their primes...makes you wonder if they’d ever win one if they played at the same age doesn’t it? To me that absolutely shows who’s the better defenseman. Enjoy! And also let me know if you want to expand it to the top 50 all-time... then at least we can maybe get a couple Canucks in there too.

Congratulations Lidstrom, the people have spoken and I will shut-up, your the second best D ever to lace them up. Sure nobody would mind him on their team and neither would I. Don’t forget to nominate someone - Scott Niedermayer was the overwhelming omission last time. To cut it down a little going to add him and guys who won multiple Norris/Harts over the years to go into round three. Will add an “other” catagory if none of these guys work for you. Edit: Sorry Al Mac .. I have a mental block on how to spell your name! Added anyone from the previous poll who had any votes - that includes him and Pronger...don’t forget to nominate someone. Going to go with Babych .. ok not yet - start with Pilote.

With the border closed what will the Canucks do with their AHL team? I’ve heard that they are looking at loaning players out to other teams. I’m not sure how that works since those teams would have to be in Canada if the players can be called up to the Canucks. I believe a solution would be to move the team up here on a temporary basis and play out of Rogers Arena or Abbotsford. Put the games on a local tv station. At least the advertising would help with players salaries. Maybe eventually socially distanced fans? I’d enjoy watching future Canucks play on TV. Thoughts?

So with the potential of playoff hockey in July, do the masterminds of this league look to push us into playoff hockey immediately? July 1st is a date that is far more important than Draft day in June. Will the league look to players and NHLPA to waive or amend their contracts? Does this potential action open the door to other amendments between the NHL and NHLPA as a bargaining chip? ..Or will this cancel a season? Thoughts ladies and gents?

Ok Canucks fans, I'm asking this because I kind of like the NY rangers. So my question to you is it wrong to like the rangers as a 2nd fav team? Do you have any original 6/67 expansion teams you like
