Xbox 360 Thread

For all that is skeptical of the RRoD, here's a quick bit of information that might ease your mind.

Since the launch of the 360, Microsoft have been upgrading their motherboards that have helped reduce chances of the RRoD.

THe launch console used a motherboard named Xenon.

Later on it was replaced by another named Zephyr.

Last August it was replaced by the most current motherboard, Falcon.

To put it short, the Falcon motherboard is a 65nm chip rather than the 90nm chips the Xenon and Zephyr models are, which allows it to run cooler and uses less electricity to produce the same amount of power as the X and Z chips.

As far as I know, most Falcon models have no problems with the RRoD - I for one have one and after 5 months of heavy use, it hasn't RRoD yet. My friend's Zephyr model RRoD in about the same time.

To me, I believe the chances of getting an RRoD on the latest Xbox360 is quite slim - if you take care to put it in a well ventilated area and take some optional precautions then it'd be a stroke of luck to be hit with the RRoD.

The failure rate of the new Falcon 360's is somewhere in between 7-10%, but that will change longer into the lifespan of these newer consoles since the sample size will iincrease.

These 360's have an extra GPU Heat Sink that helps dissipate the heat.

I was about to post defending the xbox's issues, stating that mine had no issues, when it promptly decided to RRoD. I'm not joking.

Bought in December, with an August 07 manufacture date. Lasted 7 months. Holiday edition elite. If you think the newer ones are safe, you're dead wrong.

If you check the sticker tag on the side of the box, it'll list some information about it such as manufacture date and such. Look at the pwer supply label - It should be listed as 175W. The reason this indicates it is a Falcon is because the Falcon motherboards were shipped with a different power supply unit from the two older models. The two cannot be interchanged. Again, this is not a foolproof way to determine it because the early shipment of Falcons had a 203W sticker on the box, but the actual power supply brick had the voltage listed at 175W, but that was a couple of months ago. If the old store stock was sold (through sales etc) then the newer stock would give you the best bet. Again, manufacture dates after August 2007 would most likely get you a Falcon motherboard. The later the date it is manufactured (November/December or even 2008), the greater the chance.

Double check - you probably got the older stock... that was very close to the Falcon release date; having said that the Falcon is not problem free which is why I got a 3 year transferable extended warranty .. makes reselling easier when I grab the Jasper edition.

You mean the Elite edition? That's the one I have - I'm expecting there should be a price drop just before the new one is released - currently it's still $449 at FS.

360Fanboy is a good source

I have a strange problem, My 360 has the red rings, when i talked to the 360 support people they got me to put the plug into a differnt socket. I did and it worked fine for about 10 mins, then it red ringed again so i put it into a different near by socket it worked for about 30-40 mins then red ringed again. Can anyone help?

It's a temporary fix. You will sometimes get the RROD, turn it off for a bit, get to play for a while, then it will come back. Changing sockets didn't do anything, it was being turned off and allowing it to cool that fixed it.
