Chris19
Issued by Environment Canada Major winter storms to affect holiday travel across southwestern British Columbia... Regions affected: Metro Vancouver Greater Victoria Fraser Valley Howe Sound Whistler Sunshine Coast Southern Gulf Islands East Vancouver Island West Vancouver Island North Vancouver Island Inland Vancouver Island Queen Charlotte Islands Another in a series of winter storms will reach Vancouver Island Saturday night and the Lower Mainland Sunday. Snowfalls of up to 15 centimetres or more are possible with this storm but will vary dramatically across the south coast. Subtle changes in wind direction can result in much heavier snow. Areas subject to the strongest onshore northeast winds such as the the east coast of Vancouver Island are at greatest risk of heavy snow. The snow will be light at first over the inland areas of the mainland where Arctic outflow will keep the air very dry initially. Very strong winds will likely prompt wind warnings and create blowing snow and blizzard-like conditions in some areas. Travel will be treacherous on roads and highways especially in coastal inlets and valleys and eventually the coast mountain passes. Yet another storm with snow and strong winds aproaching on Tuesday will ensure that travel on the south coast and to and from the bc interior will be hazardous through Christmas day. Warnings will be issued or this statement will be updated within 12 hours. Please follow the forecasts and warnings issued by Environment Canada. Drgnslyer
Ok kids, pay attention. Ice is not a zero-friction surface. Curling! Why do curlers sweep in front of the rock? Brushing dirt away? No, the sweeping melts a very thin layer of ice into water. The rock will slide farther. For example, a throw with no sweeping might get to the top of the circle. The exact same throw with sweeping might completely overshoot the circle entirely. Still think ice is naturally slippery? Thermablades! I'm sure you know about them. They warm up the blade by a few degrees, in turn melting a thin layer of ice into water. Sound familiar? Thermablades glide farther than regular blades. Still think ice is naturally slippery? Ski wax! I bet you think ski wax makes skis slippery. It's actually the opposite. The wax creates friction, which in turns melts a thin layer of ice (in this case, ice in crystal form i.e. snow) into water. The skis glide over this layer of water. Ever wondered why a waxed ski glides farther and goes faster than an unwaxed ski? Still think ice is naturally slippery? I don't know that anyone would actually claim ice is ZERO friction...hockey would be a pretty stupid sport if it was actually. you have to agree that ice is more slippery than say....asphalt. It all depends on what your point of reference is. compared to this stuff ice is like sandpaper. compared to the roads we drive on, ice is very very dangerous. meh...you might just be throwing that out there to try and get some response like mine, if so, hook, line, and sinker. anyways, I'll really be enjoying the coquihalla highway...I get to drive to Kamloops today, come back Monday, and drive back up again wednesday afternoon, coming back early early friday morning. (yay the life of a retail employee....at least they pay me well enough) Good winter tires, and chains if need be...let's hope it doesn't get too foggy up there! Rodlofton
Wow! All this whining about how much snow and how cold it is over there in BC.... Christ, that’s like everyday Alberta weather. The only crappy part about Alberta, (other than having to listen about two hockey teams I don’t care about), every spring - fall everyone forgets how to drive in winter over here. Chris19
That's why Vancouver or the rest of the South Coast is different than Alberta. We don't get these weather every year espicially the cold snap and the snow we're getting.
