Gretzky's Mullet
Marquis is in the all-star game because Manuel cannot look past W/L records. If you are going to take a Rockies pitcher, you take Ubaldo Jimenez. Ubaldo has a 3.33 FIP (reads like ERA but removes luck and fielding) and Marquis' is 4.11. There is an article here about the two pitchers. If you think that wins are a good way to measure a pitcher's value, you can go be the Royals/Nats GM. Bernie Brewer
Believe it or not, wins are important, and he has more than any other pitcher. None of your favourite stats take into account some of the intangibles associated with winning games, whereas wins as a category is pretty black and white. Gretzky's Mullet
Slag heap of sarcasm aside, wins do not tell you that much about a pitcher. Yes, better pitchers generally win more games, but that is not always the case. Wins and losses are so dependent on the opposing lineup, fielding, luck, and bullpen (except complete games) that wins really don't tell you much about a pitcher. Heard of a guy named Nolan Ryan? In 1987, he went 8-16 in 34 starts with a 2.79 ERA. He won 12 games the previous and following year with ERAs of 3.34 and 3.52. In 1978, he went 10-13 between years with 19 and 16 wins. The Alchemist
Um.....maybe the fact that he's 12-5 with a 3.61 ERA? Marquis has been very underrated in his career and so I have to say it doesn't surprise me to read an idiotic inquiry like that one. And one obviously uninformed..... Raoul Duke
I was pretty pissed off when i heard this on the team 1040, it better be one hell of a package if he gets traded. I agree that this sends the wrong message to the fans saying that the team is packing it in with half the season left and still being in the mix for the wildcard
MeatCurtainsMcGee
JP is a tool. Its barely half way through the season and he's already throwing in the towel. What kind of message does that send to his team and their paying fans? With the way this team started the season, it looked like they were just a couple of pieces away from contending. A string of bad luck and poor play against the teams that count (Yankees, Red Sox, Rays) has left them in a tough spot. I cant see JP trading Doc this season. However, if he does, the Marlins would be a good fit. Halladay is from Florida and would be happy playing there. Living in Toronto I have been lucky enough to attend many of Roy's starts. IMO he has been the best pitcher in the American League over the last 5+ years and deserves to play playoff baseball. If thats with a team other than the Jays... so be it. RUPERTKBD
I think the Halladay "story" is overblown. What happens here is some reporter asks JP "Would you consider moving Doc?" Riccardi replies "Well, if the right offer came along, we'd consider it." This, of course meaning an absolute no-brainer of a deal would have to be made, otherwise he has no intention of moving Roy, and is definitely not shopping him. The media take this story and spin it to look like the Jays want to dump Roy and rebuild. It's a case of writers taking 1+1 and getting 3. Changing the topic a bit, has everyone gone to bluejays.com and cast their vote(s) for Adam Lind to the All-Star game?

Horatio
http://network.nationalpost.com/np/blogs/p...al-release.aspx According to this, they will owe him about 5 million for the rest of this season, and 10 million for next.
