Gretzky's Mullet
Oh, I forgot: we gave up Rafael Soriano for Ramirez, as well as paying him boatloads. Anyway, re Fister, he has a below-average fastball and he seems to know that. He threw his change a ton last night, which worked for the most part. I could see him being a sort of Jakubauskas type guy, not a world-beater but a useful player. I want to see him prove me wrong (on the good side). People were wondering why Zduriencik was stockpiling these similar guys (Vargas, Olson, RRS, French, and Fister/Jak) and it's because pitchers are often injured and having a bunch of these cheap, decent pitchers is a very good thing as we've seen. It's similar to how Z built the bullpen, just throw a bunch of cheap, youngish people in there and see who comes to the top. Jak and Olson pitched out of the rotation, but RRS and Fister look like they could be a good, cheap 4/5 for the next few years. (Notice how many times I said cheap? Re-sign Felix please)
Bernie Brewer
As much as I think you may disagree with me, I wouldn't have minded seeing a bit of cash go Raul Ibanez's way. Being that left field, from a hitting perspective, has been a complete disaster this season (ie: compare Chavez/Balentien/Langerhans/Saunders/Cedeno/Griffey combined stats to Raul Ibanez). I wonder if they'd paid that guy, maybe they'd be a more solid contender. I realize money doesn't grow on trees, all I'm saying is that perhaps had there been fewer blunders of the Silva/Ramirez/Batista variety in the last couple of years, there'd be a bit more for Jack Z to spend. Personally, Batista is my least favourite off that list btw, as much as I pretty much hate all of them. Honourable mention (though he's not a pitcher) to one Richmond Lockwood Sexson. Bernie Brewer
Wow, my condolences Jays fans. Lost Paxton and Eliopoulos, both Canadian pitchers. How many Secret Service/whatever in Canada do they have protecting JP?

RUPERTKBD
From TSN.ca: Another week and another kick in the pants for Blue Jays fans. First it was the seemingly endless discussion of Roy Halladay, then last week there was the Alex Rios waiver claim. Now, lost in the hubbub of Stephen Strasburg's record signing with the Washington Nationals is the news that the Jays couldn't sign three of their top four draft picks by the deadline. Two of those players, James Paxton of Ladner, BC (37th overall) and Jake Eliopoulos of New Market, ON (68th overall) were Canadian. Am I saying that because the guys were Canadian that they should have signed with the Jays regardless of what was offered? Of course not. I wasn't privy to the negotiations, and I'm not sure how far apart the team was with the two Canadians or the other player, Jake Barrett (99th overall), but the optics of not getting deals done aren't good. First of all, the team made a concerted effort to try to brand itself as Canada's team by adding a maple leaf to their jerseys, and according to TSN.ca writer Will Hill, who formerly worked in the front office with the club, that was all part of interm president Paul Beeston's plan. Of the nine Canadian players the Jays selected at the MLB Draft this year, care to guess how many of them signed with the club? One. Former shortstop Tony Fernandez's son, who was taken in the 34th round. For the most part, I think the "Buy Canadian" plan can be put on the scrap heap next to "Contending in 2010" and "Financial Flexibility." I know that the Jays went over slot to add their first round pick Chad Jenkins (20th) overall, which means that for the first time in a long time they were willing to spend the money that contending clubs do to get talent in their system. But not being able to build off that signing and missing out on the next three picks I think would be demoralizing. Paxton is represented by Scott Boras, and the Jays have traditionally stayed away from Boras clients. After Paxton was selected Boras reportedly said that his client wouldn't come cheap and it looks like he wasn't bluffing. The fact that Eliopoulos didn't sign is a head scratcher, again I'm not sure what the club offered or what the player was looking for, but considering the all the money that the team shed off of its payroll in recent weeks, you would hope that a few hundred thousand dollars wouldn't have held things up. The other interesting thing to note in all of this is that both Paxton and Barrett were selected with picks the Jays were awarded for losing A.J. Burnett to free agency last season. While the Jays don't lose the picks for the players they didn't sign as next season they'll get compensatory picks, the team does lose a year of seasoning with the players in their organization. A year like that can be important for a rebuilding team and that's what the Blue Jays are.

Gretzky's Mullet
Joe Mauer is your AL Most Valuable Player. No ifs ands or buts. If not for a certain Cardinals first baseman, I would say he was the best position player in baseball.

Gretzky's Mullet
Yep, no doubt about it. Nothing will tell you otherwise. The AL's best hitter by wOBA AS A CATCHER, good-great defense, the only one who comes close is Longoria.
Bernie Brewer
Longoria is good, but based on traditional stats, Mauer's got him beat in every offensive category except RBI, which he still leads in on a per game basis, and SB which are pretty much a wash (neither steals much), and in some by very considerable margins. Then add in the fact that Mauer plays a premium defensive position, and does it well, and there really can't be much of a comparison. Mauer also barely ever strikes out, which carries a fair bit of weight for me. Youkilis, Teixeira and Morneau will each receive some votes, but I'd be shocked if either got a first place vote. hank4hire
I wonder if Mauer can keep this torried pace throughout his career. Offensive catcher's tend to flame out because of the physical rigors of the catching position (see Mike Piazza, Pudge Rodriguez, Jason Varitek), with hall of famers Yogi Berra and Johnny bench being exceptions. I wouldn't be surprised if 5-8 years down the line, Mauer moves to 1B or DH because his offense would appear to be much more important then his defensive catching. PowerIce
I was excited when Cito became coach last year. And to the start of this season, we were doing so well. Now he's just as bad as John Gibbons was. Do something Cito!
