Gretzky's Mullet

I'm happy for Aaron, even if I'm pulling for the Giants (whose season is probably in a death spiral right now). The guy never really did anything wrong, he always played hard, but maybe a change of scenery really was what he needed. After all, it's not like he hadn't shown that the talent was there in the past.

Alvarez is starting to really shine lawrie might be doing better cause of a new organization and he has a lot to prove. One he has matured two he is playing in his country and three he got traded for marcum to a organization thats fans want him to succeed just a couple reasons.

Some guys just seem to see the ball better at the major league level. It certainly isn't the norm. However, there is also better hitting instruction at the major league level, sometimes it just takes a little tweak to a guy's approach to improve their power stroke. After all, Jose Bautista was a journeyman to start his career, but it wasn't until he was with the Jays that he really started to hit for power, and I think a lot of that just had to do with him re-visiting his timing with the Blue Jays hitting instructor (I think it was Dwayne Murphy but I'm not totally sure).

Re: Lawrie, consider that before this year, he played AA ball in the Brewers organization, and their affiliate is the Huntsville Stars of the Southern League. The Stars' home stadium (Joe W Davis Stadium) has a left field porch 345 feet away from home plate, and that fence is much higher than a typical major league fence (similar to the Nat, lots of minor league stadiums have outfield fences loaded with ads, so a double-high fence = twice as many). So that may partially explain the difference, at least as far as home field numbers are concerned (I don't know where to find minor league home/away splits). Huntsville, Alabama is about 640 feet above sea level, and around average in summer temperature compared to the rest of the country, with a bit higher humidity (warmth and humidity are both supposedly good for home runs, as is higher elevation). Toronto has a lower elevation, but very hot and humid summers and closer fences at the foul lines and power alleys than Huntsville, so it's probably a better place to hit homers. If you consider Las Vegas, it isn't humid, but is at a much higher elevation and has very hot summers, so that might be part of the power increase there too. 51's home park Cashman Field has closer fences too, and is known to be a hitter's park (though really, the PCL is a hitter's league, and Lawrie had good power numbers home and away in AAA).

In the end though, some credit also has to go to the kid. He probably worked pretty hard in the offseason, and some of the added power is as a result.

I keep hearing talks of adding another wild card team to the playoffs. I assume this is 1 more team per league? How would 5 teams per league making the post season work? I think they'd have to add 2 teams making it 6 and 1st and 2nd have a bye in round one. I just can't seem to figure out 5 teams.
