Who are your guys picks for awards?

I don't like pitchers winning the MVP the same way I don't like goalies winning the Hart. On most teams, they are your MVP anyways. They have their own award, so just give it to a hitter. For MVP I am going for similar guys in each league. They both don't lead in any single statistical category but contributing across the board.

Miguel Cabrera in the AL and Ryan Braun in the NL.

Both will hit over 30 HR's, 100 Runs and 100 RBIs. Both are hitting over .330. And they are 2nd and 4th in OBPS. And both teams are in comfortable leads in the Central division.

As for Cy Young, Verlander is the easy choice in the AL, and Weaver and Sabathia shouldn't be ashamed by that. In the NL it has to be Clayton Kershaw. He has the numbers to keep up with Lee and Halladay (actually better than both in Ks, ERA and WHIP) and even manages a fantastic record on the Dodgers.

ROY:

AL - Mark Trumbo

NL - Craig Kimbrel

I remember reading an article on Grantland.com that completely persuaded me on why Justin Verlander should win MVP.

Candidates: Bautista, Verlander, Granderson, Sox Studs (A-Gon, Pedroia, Jacoby)

Here are the knocks on them,

I'll be first to admit Bautista has absolutely gaudy numbers (even though I absolutly despise the jays): leading the American League in WAR (8.0), OBP (.449), slugging (.640) and OPS (1.089) by significant margins, as well as homers (39).

But the problem is the award is MVP, as in most valuable player to his team, not BEST Player or Most Oustanding Player. If it was the BEST Player of the year award Bautista would win hands down. He's a threat everytime he steps onto the field. But how Valuable can a player be when his team that hovers around .500.

Granderson, and the Sox cannot win MVP because really their team are stacked as it is and how VALUABLE can a player be when you've got the likes of Teix, Cano, and like I said 3 candidates on the Sox. If you take away Granderson, Pedey, Jacoby, A-Gon their team is still extremely good.

Now onto Verlander,

Currently leading the AL Central by seven games, the Tigers are ranked fifth in runs, seventh in homers, fourth in OBP, fifth in slugging and 14th in steals, so you can't say they have an elite offense or anything. Surely, their starting pitching is carrying them … right? Check out everyone who started for the Tigers this season:

Justin Verlander (29 starts): 2.38 ERA, 215.2 IP, 147 H, 218 K's, 0.90 WHIP

Max Scherzer (28 starts): 4.52 ERA, 165.1 IP, 178 H, 142 K's, 1.37 WHIP

Rick Porcello (26 starts): 5.01 ERA, 149 IP, 178 H, 88 K's, 1.44 WHIP

Brad Penny (26 starts): 5.07 ERA, 156.1 IP, 184 H, 65 K's, 1.50 WHIP

Phil Coke (14 starts): 4.82 ERA, 74.2 IP, 81 H, 37 K's, 1.49 WHIP

Doug Fister (6 starts): 2.97 ERA, 36.1 IP, 39 H, 23 K's, 1.13 WHIP

Andrew Oliver (2 starts): 6.52 ERA, 9.2 IP, 11 H, 5 K's, 1.97 WHIP

Duane Below (2 starts): 4.66 ERA, 9.2 IP, 11 H, 3 K's, 1.45 WHIP

Jacob Turner (2 starts): 7.45 ERA, 9.2 IP, 10 H, 8 K's, 1.34 WHIP

Charlie Furbush (2 starts): 8.61 ERA, 7.1 IP, 14 H, 7 K's, 2.39 WHIP

The Tigers are 21-8 when Verlander starts, and a .500 team when he doesn't pitch. Basicaly the ONLY reason they are in the playoff hunt is BECAUSE of Justin Verlander. Take Verlander out of the mix and they are a .500 team. That to ME is the biggest factor.

I think the biggest thing is seperating Most VALUABLE Player from Most OUSTANDING Player.

And to me the most VALUABLE player is Justin Verlander.

Ackley hasn't played enough to be rookie of the year, but I don't think Arencibia is going to win it. The ROY in the AL should be one out of Mark Trumbo of the Angels, Eric Hosmer of the Royals, or Jeremy Hellickson of the Rays.

In the NL it's probably Craig Kimbrel, though another Atlanta Brave, Freddie Freeman, also has a strong case.

Even if you meet the threshold for minimum number of games to be ROY, doesn't mean you'll win. Voters will tend to slant towards guys who've made an impact all year round, and it is also influenced to some degree by how the player has contributed to winning. Not necessarily meaning they have to play for a playoff team, but Ackley's strong play gets lost in the Mariners' extreme woefulness. Eric Hosmer will likely fall victim to the same thing. Trumbo has been slugging big homers to help the Angels contend, and that's going to count for something, same with Hellickson, pitching very well for a team playing meaningful games in September. I have made very clear how much I don't like the fact that individual awards sometimes reward team strength, but that combined with Trumbo or Hellickson's full season of strong play in my opinion rules out Ackley.

Did anyone else hear about this? Mets not allowed to wear NYPD & FDNY hats on Sunday.

NY Controversy

I know the MLB is a little strict on the rules and marketing etc..but there are times of exceptions. I would say sunday was one of those times.

Not every team plays a subway ride away from Ground Zero. Not every team plays every game in front of fans who had their city and lives turned upside down on that September morning in '01. Not every team is the beloved franchise of many of those firefighters and police officers who were honored on Sunday.
