Stamkos not taking part at WJHC development camp

Steven Stamkos won't be participating at Canada's World Junior development camp in Ottawa next week, as the highly-touted forward is taking part in a week-long rookie development camp with the Tampa Bay Lightning in Victoria beginning Monday.

Stamkos, selected first overall by the Lightning in June, was a member of the Canadian team that won its fourth straight gold medal in the Czech Republic in January. The Sarnia Sting forward is expected to be penciled into the lineup when the Lightning begin the regular season in October.

Also unable to participate are Los Angeles Kings prospect Thomas Hickey and Carolina Hurricanes draft pick Zach Boychuk.

Forty-four junior-aged players will be in Ottawa for the four-day camp, which begins on Saturday. The players have been divided into two teams – Red and White – and will play in three intersquad games.

There will be seven players at camp from January's gold medal-winning team, including Luke Schenn, P.K. Subban, Colton Gillies, Brandon Sutter, Drew Doughty, John Tavares and Kyle Turris.
