Will there be a free preview period for the Canada Line, or will they charge full fare from day one?

no idea. btw, there's an open house for Vancouver City Centre Station on Saturday, July 25th from 2-7pm in conjunction with Granville Street reopening festivities.

No joke...this is the route map for the Canada Line, created by Translink. Similar maps are also going to replace the maps on the other two SkyTrain lines.

well, on the bright side....they got the colour scheme right. :D RED for CANADA LINE! I never understood why InTransitBC decided to brand the line with green/blue colours when those are far too similar to the Millennium Line and Evergreen Line colours. Odd how InTransitBC brands the Canada Line in one way, and Translink brands it as another.

Maybe they thought it was the Canuck Line.

Oh, and that map makes downtown Vancouver look like ball cancer.

I think that's red for Zone 2. It's the standard for zone maps already in use, as are yellow for Zone 1 and green for Zone 3.

Yet they still messed it up. North Vancouver and Richmond are botyh in Zone 2, yet North Van is in another shade of red :D

Canada Line could be in service by mid-August

Opening day will be free to public to ride

Updated: Thu Jul. 16 2009 20:43:47

ctvbc.ca

The Canada Line rapid transit system is expected to open earlier than expected, possibly as soon as mid-August. That's nearly four months ahead of schedule.

Expected to cost around $2 billion, it will make Vancouver the first Canadian city to have a rapid transit link between its downtown core and its airport.

The massive project is expected to change the way tens of thousands of commuters get around the Lower Mainland area.

But before it can open, there are still plenty of finishing touches being done at all the stations along the Canada Line route.

"I think people have been seeing the trains run as we've been testing them,'' said Steve Crombie, spokesman for InTransit BC, the company contracted to build and help fund the project.

" I think there has been a lot of curiosity and interest in what is this thing and how does it work."

"We have 19 kilometres of line and 16 stations,'' he said.

Once the system opens, each one-way fare to and from Vancouver International Airport is expected to cost between $5 and $6.

Travelling at speeds of up to 80 kilometres per hour, it will take passengers 25 minutes to get from Waterfront Station in downtown Vancouver to the airport.

Transportation engineers and planners at the City of Vancouver say the Canada Line is expected to help ease traffic congestion, by getting more commuters out of cars, cutting pollution.

At full capacity, each Canada Line train will hold 400 passengers. (nitronuts edit: BS capacity) They will be running trains every three minutes during peak service. The cars are much wider than SkyTrain, allowing them to accommodate luggage.

Travellers will ride for free on opening day, which could come as early as mid-August.

$5+ for a one-way ticket?!

I'm lucky to have a u-pass I suppose.

Only if you're traveling from Vancouver to Sea Island/YVR. There's a surcharge for traveling to the airport. But from Vancouver to Richmond, it's the same as the current two-zone fare for the 98 B-Line.

Thats nothing. I consider that to be cheap when compared to other airport express around the world.

In London, it's £16.50 for Heathrow Express or £5.00 for the Tube from Heathrow. In New York, works out to be 7-8 dollars from Manhattan to JFK International. And in Hong Kong, it's 100 HKD to ride the airport express.

They will be running extra trains to full capacity that day, will they?

Otherwise, I can imagine everybody getting crushed inside of them.

At the most, they will normally run 18 of their 20 trains. But I'm quite sure they're expecting for a massive crush for a FREE opening day (or at least i hope they are wise enough to), and will use all 20 trains.

Side note: all SkyTrain and Canada Line cars will be in operation during the 2010 Games. There won't be any spares sitting in a storage track or at the train yard.

More then $30 dollars for one way, ridiculous. I remember when I went with my parents with the 3 of us and it would cost us more then $90 dollars CND if we were to take the Express so we decided to take the Heathrow Connect, totally worth it for £7.40(around $14.00). The only difference was that it would stop at about 4 stops for about less then 5 minutes each stop. So I suggest just taking the Heathrow Connect(Which follows the same track as the Express) only the express doesn't stop.

BTW: The heathrow Connect trains are so much better then the Canada line trains which are extremely tiny compared to "Connect". I guess its the distance from Heathrow to Paddington

You can't exactly compare it to Heathrow's Connect train. Connect is an express train, it's capable of reaching speeds of 160 km/h. Note that Heathrow Airport is connected with 3 or 4 Underground lines, which btw aren't surcharged like the Canada Line's airport stations. A better comparison for the Canada Line will be those Underground lines that reach Heathrow as they are metro trains.

Unfortunately, the surcharge on Sea Island has to be done as there's going to be much lower ridership coming from the airport.

Tokyo is pretty ridiculous as well. The Narita Express works out to be around 4000 yen, which is around 45-50 dollars and still takes about an hour to get into Tokyo Centre. The next option is Keisei Skyliner and it's half the price for 2000 yen, train is really old and smelly, but takes about an hour as well. Then the last option is a train that makes all stops from Narita to Tokyo centre, will cost you 1000 yen, but it will take you around 2 hours to get into the city.

I work at Landsdowne and got a notice from the security that the line is rumoured to open on the 17th. I dont know where you got the 2nd from.

I was working on my own rumour that came from people I know within Translink and InTransitBC....and from some contracts for the new bus loops at Marine Drive and Bridgeport. The original behind-the-door target date was August 2nd for a BC Day weekend opening.

Of course, opening day on the 17th sounds plausible as well. I wouldn't want them to rush the completion that much....Simpsons monorail episode, anyone?
