The Official Transit Thread

I was working on my own rumour that came from people I know within Translink and InTransitBC....and from some contracts for the new bus loops at Marine Drive and Bridgeport. The original behind-the-door target date was August 2nd for a BC Day weekend opening.

Of course, opening day on the 17th sounds plausible as well. I wouldn't want them to rush the completion that much....Simpsons monorail episode, anyone?

I said, mr. link, where did my Canadian music post go? Are you going to keep on ignoring me?

No joke...this is the route map for the Canada Line, created by Translink. Similar maps are also going to replace the maps on the other two SkyTrain lines.

well, on the bright side....they got the colour scheme right. :D RED for CANADA LINE! I never understood why InTransitBC decided to brand the line with green/blue colours when those are far too similar to the Millennium Line and Evergreen Line colours. Odd how InTransitBC brands the Canada Line in one way, and Translink brands it as another.

Regarding this, have you been too Waterfront recently? They have wall mounted maps that show the Canada Line in light blue. And these are not temporary maps either.

Are you like pissed about light blue? Way to contribute.

Somewhere better point me to music.

Yea, i've seen those maps and new signs as early as Canada Day. Far too early...you'd think some tourists or new transit users would be confused. Regardless, the whole colour scheme for the Canada Line was shortsighted.

It'll be a step down from SkyTrain but a step up from the articulated trolleys...in other words, an articulated trolley on steroids.

LRT works well in corridors that don't have the demand for high-capacity rapid transit rail systems, like SkyTrain or subways, but are rather more suitable for more lower-capacity rapid transit rail systems like LRT. And it certainly is a good alternative (as they are cheaper to build) for corridors like 41st Avenue, Hastings, Victoria Drive, Arbutus corridor, etc.

Often, entire traffic lanes are given to the LRT/streetcar for its own right of way....and the trains are given traffic signal priority at intersections to lower the travel time.

In Calgary, they are notorious for car crash accidents....but of course, it happens on every LRT system:

wow that video was embarassing... its probably cause it isnt really a habit to shoulder check normally when making a left turn, but when theres a track right beside you, youd think it wouldnt hurt to just friggen check...

btw i havent informed myself to much about this topic, but by the sounds of it, does some other company own this part of the track other than translink? im seeing names like intransit. someone care to share some light? just really curious.

They don't own the Canada Line, Translink does. But for legal reasons, InTransitBC owns the trains.

The provincial government decided to make this a private-public project. InTransitBC consortium, which is headed by Quebec-based engineering giant SNC-Lavalin (which designed the Expo and Millennium Lines), won the bid to design, build, and operate the Canada Line for a 35-year period.

ProTransBC, a subsidiary of InTransitBC, will be operating the Canada Line. Because performance and quality service are vital to how much InTransitBC gets paid for operating the Canada Line, there will be a lot more fare checks and staff present on the new line.

Aug 2nd, eh?

Thank God I'll be away in Golden Ears that weekend so I don't have to witness this monstrosity.

as an aside: open it after the big fireworks > during. Imagine 100,000 commuters stuck in d/t Vancouver, and they can't go anywhere because the RAV Line's down and all the 98s are back at the depot.
